This 40-minute tour takes in Bergheim's ramparts, still one of the finest examples of medieval city fortifications in Alsace:
- 1 double fortification: 2 fortification walls separated by a moat (now occupied by gardens),
- 1 external ditch (where the Bergenbach, the stream that runs through Bergheim, flows),
- a counterscarp wall on the northeast side,
- 4 gates: defensive points directed towards the 4 cardinal points,
¿ to the west, the Upper Gate is the only gate still visible today, the other 3 (the Untertor, the Neutor and the Leimentor) were destroyed in the 19th century to facilitate the passage of carts.
- 9 flanking towers: 1 square tower and 8 half-round towers ¿ all still visible today
¿ Unlike most fortified towns in Alsace, the town of Bergheim did not have a fortified castle.
