'Man and the Rhine, Shared Lives' The walk takes you through the Sauer Delta Nature Reserve. This fascinating landscape has long been linked to human activity. Man has exploited and used the natural world down the ages, creating a polder, felling trees... The Nature Reserve is now managed by the CSA (Alsatian Sites Conservatory). Regular cutting of the meadows and reed beds and pasture help to keep the environments open. 2-km walk (approximately 45 min). Easy route to walk. Parking at the Sauer Car Park.

the Banks of the Rhine Trail signposted with a yellow circle by the Club Vosgien. Circular itinerary of 8 km. Start and finish in front of the Maison de la Wacht. It will take you into the forest and along the banks of the Rhine.

This cross-border circuit is an invitation to roam through different landscapes along the Rhine via two river ferries (Seltz and Neubourg). The route from Seltz to Neubourg leads you through the nature reserve of the Sauer delta, oxbow lakes of the Rhine, the Goldkanal and the museums of the Rhineland Park along the way. And you can stop off for a quick dip in the various bathing spots. Please note that the German section of the trail is not tarmacked.

The Heights of Mothern. Start and finish in front of the Maison de la Wacht, which houses the Tourist Information Office and the exhibition "Once upon a time on the Rhine". This walk also gives you the chance to explore the Haras de la Née (stud farm).

The start and finish are in front of the tourist information office that houses the media library and a museum. Let's follow the red circle, heading left along Rue Principale (beside Place de la Mairie). Let's walk past the church, cross the Seltzbach, and take in the roadside cross to reach the youth centre and the sports fields. We go into the forest and follow part of the fitness trail. The forest track follows the Sauer, to the right and upwards, and takes us to an old level crossing keeper's house. Let's head to the right, cross the road and the level crossing to go back into the forest to the left. Before reaching the motorway, let's take the fork to the left. As we leave the forest, let's take the little asphalted road to the level crossing, without crossing it. Let's fork to the right and walk alongside the cycle track. We go back into the village to take the road from Hatten to Koramic, where we turn right on to the D328. Let's walk past the fine-looking roundabout and take the Avenue du Général Schneider by the water tower to go back to where we started.

Waterside Curiosities. A walk along the banks of the Rhine. The walking trail, which is signposted by a green circle, runs alongside the Rhine and offers you a multitude of interesting things to discover, such as the trout farm, the former Willersin gravel pits in Munchhausen and the port of Seltz. An unspoilt enclave, a silent paradise for marsh fowl, that's what you'll find at Le Grosswoerth. This is a remarkable site from an ornithological and botanical point of view, but it's also interesting for its landscape and its hydrology: it's one of the last sectors where the waters of the Rhine overflow in the event of high waters. Another site worth exploring is the eastern station for ringing migrating birds with clearly defined study in mind. After skirting the Epplé gravel pit, you can explore a botanical garden towards the end of the trail (numerous species of trees), which also has picnic and play areas. The walking trail is dotted with bilingual information panels, which have been set up at key points.

After the ferry at Seltz-Plittersdorf, the route goes through the villages of the Rhine strip to reach the Eastern limit of the forest of Haguenau. The road then turns north-west to follow the Maginot line. The cycle trail takes you through forest as far as Hatten, then through a hilly area to the foot of the Northern Vosges. The picturesque villages of Hoffen and Hunspach punctuate the itinerary until the Pfaffenschlick pass. Lembach is well-known as a gastronomic halt. The valley of the Sauer, then those of the Jaegerthal and the Schwarzbach then lead on to Bitche in Lorraine. The start and finish are in front of the tourist information office that houses the media library and a museum. We follow the blue circle, to the end of the village. Let's cross the bridge over the Sauer. At the first crossroads, we will begin the trail proper, heading in the direction of the port of Beinheim and the cable ferry. We pass the water catchment to get to the wayside shrine. Let's continue our walk following the blue circle to Kleinrhein. Let's take the path that branches off at a right angle to the left. We are going to take the dyke to get to the port of Beinheim. Let's fork off to the left to follow the track that runs alongside the Rhine. There, we will discover the activity of a navigable, and very busy, water course. In the distance, we can already see the ferry infrastructure. After the ferry, let's fork to the left to walk alongside the dyke before reaching the water treatment plant. Let's skirt around the plant, close to the fence, to enter the Sauer Delta forest. The village is already in sight. The circuit can be walked in both directions. One direction starts at the tourist information office and the other at the cable ferry.

The ruins of Grand Arnsbourg, a castle dating back to the middle of the 12th century, are between Philippsbourg and Niederbronn. The castle was built to survey the Zinsel valley leading to Bitche. Louis d'Arnsbourg was the first occupant in 1229; from 1332, it was in the hands of the Lords of Lichtenberg until the last descendant died in 1481. The Count of Deux-Pont-Bitche became proprietor until the castle was partially destroyed during the Peasant War. For security reason access is strictly forbidden. Access: Forestry car park on the D87. Follow the red rectangles up to the path which lead you to the ruin in approximately 30 minutes

The Rothenburg Castle is several hundred metres from the Falkenstein but has only a few visual remains. Its origins are unknown. The castle is cited in 1353 as belonging to the Count of Bitche. several years later, it became a hideout for highwaymen and was eventually destroyed by the Strasbourg militia. In the 16th century, it is sited as a small old ruined castle. Access: By the forestry road, a small steep path will take you up to the ruins.

The Falkenstein castle is the most important castle in Pays de Bitche. It was built in th 12th century under the Count of Lutzelbourg's orders to protect the Holy forest of Haguenau. In 1564, the last Lord of Falkenstein sold the castle to Philip IV of Hanau Lichtenberg. The structure was in flames for 5 days and nights. Several buildings were rebuilt rather hastily but were finally dismantled by the French in 1680. The ruins that remain today crown a large sandstone rock, 117m in length, 2 to 10m wide and 22m high. Once inside the arched entrance, the shape of a head of a falcon can be distinguished in the overhang of rock - Falken: falcon, Stein: rock. On the same ridge, to the side of the Falkenstein, is Helfenstein castle, "the rock that brings help". In 1410, this castle was built with the money from the villagers in Butten, Kirspach and Birsbach, the Duke of Lorraine's fieifs. It was destroyed in 1435. A few kilometres from Bitche, the small village of Sturzelbronn is home to an old Cistercian abbey founded in the 12th century. Destroyed in the French Revolution, only a few vestiges remain: The statue of St Bernard de Clairvaux, founder of the abbey: erected in 1935 at the 800th anniversary of the commeration for the founding of the Cistercian abbey in 1135. The great gates put in place during the 18th century after the 30 year war, a symbol of the power that the abbey possessed. The lapidary calendar: one of the more rare and interesting remains of the abbey. Unique in France, this ingenious calendar with its double entry table allows you to calculate the time in weeks and in days that separate Christmas from the 1st Sunday of Lent. It is sealed in the inner entrance of the church. The tympanum from the old abbey church reflecting the sobriety of the Cistercian artistry. Other things to see: the pillory reflecting the right to justice served by the monks, a sandstone sarcophgi and the cellar cave.

Lieschbach Lake at Philippsbourg is a small peaceful peat mire and lake. On the outskirts of the villages, the 2km walk around the lake offers an exceptional panoramic of the forest and the rock outcrops. Thanks to a small wooden jetty, you can have a close up view of the wide variety of dragonflies that nest here. This lake is a nature reserve and is thus protected. Swimming and canoeing is strictly forbidden. You can reach the lake via the Hanau Lake following the path with the blue cross leading to the Falkenstein castle (35min). By car: coming from Haguenau towards Bitche, turn right after Philippsbourg into the small hamlet called Lieschbach. After 200m, turn right onto a track, continue 100m and there is a small forest car park on your right. Continue on foot to the lake (10min) Coming from Bitche: follow Haguenau and before entering Philippsbourg turn left into the hamlet of Lieschbach.

The little chapel of Notre Dame des Bois is one of the hidden treasures of Pays de Bitche. Next to the Erbsenweiher Lake, the altar of this sandstone chapel is lined with a stone tabernacle contained in an iron box. It has a crucifix and four candlesticks. During the last war, the roof of the chapel was damaged and the pews, chandeliers, objects of worship and the statue of the Virgin have since disappeared. The wall inside were covered with inscrptions: the soldiers on the Maginot line had engraved their names and the chapel had even been used as a stable for their horses. During th renovation in 1974, a new statue of the Virgin was blessed and the small bell that had been found was repaired.

The old site of Erbsenthal is half way between Sturzelbronn and Eguelshardt, more precisely in the wooded hills of Biesenberg (376m), Abstberg (375m), Erbsenberg (402m) and Rothenberg (358m). In the stream flow of the Rothenbach, and flowing through the Moosbach and Atlzinsel, the site covers over 3km and 33 hectares. The left bank (24,5ha) of the river is owned by the Commune of Sturzelbronn and the right bank (9ha) is the property of Eguelshardt. The lake is admired by all who have the opportunity to see it. The GR532 and the Tres Tabernae pass by the banks as well as several circular trails way-marked by the Club Vosgien staring from the Hanau Lake. The Chapel “Notre Dame des Bois” is 2 minutes away on foot. The Cistercians monks from Sturzelbronn took ice from this lake in winter and stocked it in a “glacier”, a type of igloo insulated with straw – an ancient method that was often used in this area. The ice could be used up until summer, either for direct consumption or for preserving their food, especially fish, as the lakes were full.

The Erbsenfels Rock is one of the most beautiful natural curiosities in Pays de Bitche. This magnificent red sandstone rock is also known as the Arch Rock because of its shape formed by the erosion. The rock has a gaping hole which filters the sun leaving exceptional lighte effects amidst the vegetation. Situated along the GR532 (long distance footpath), the Erbsenfels is admired by all. This site can be discovered on foot, by bike or on horseback. Access: From Hanau Lake: follow the 6km circular walk From Waldeck Lake: follow the GR532 Note: This natural site is fragile so is pprotected. climbing is forbidden a s well as walking on the top. The raven and the peregrine falcon nest on this site between March and th end of July. During this period, we ask you to respect their tranquility and not disturb them.

Pays de Bitche has a dozen peatmires of which most are protected because of the exceptional vegetation that it shelters. A wooden walkway with descriptive panels has been created at Hanau Lake to explain the rarity and the fragility of this natural environment. From May to September, carnivorous plants, all sorts of varieties of cranberries and gracious dragonflys can be seen. the path follows through into the wood where you can discover the main varieties of trees that grow in this region. The path is approximately a kilometre long, has about 20 descriptive panels and is also part of Pays de Bitche Rock and Peat Nature Reserve.

This service bay at Bremendell has a disposal unit for waste water and a water and electric unit.

The hotel is at the centre of the village of philippsbourg, opposite the Falkenstein restaurant (same owner). Completly renovated in 2009, it has nine en-suite bedrooms. Half or full board are also possible. There is a breakfast buffet

The "friends of nature" chalet is in the middle of the country in the small village of Sturzelbronn. It has 7 rooms ideal for hikers or nature lovers.
