At the highest point of the hike, flocks of manex (a local breed of sheep) will certainly be present to enhance the walk amidst the ruins of the bordes, witnesses of a pastoral activity that has lasted through the ages. During the return to the village of Bidarray, the hiker will be able to benefit from the crossing of a forest to discover some beautiful specimens of oaks tauzins, species little represented in France.

Exploited since 1771, the pink sandstone of the Artzamendi was used to make millstones, slabs, lintels, whetstones, press stones and border makers for instance. Evacuated from the site by ox-drawn carriages, these products were shipped to Cambo les Bains for mills in Bayonne and Dax. The current remains (150 millstones currently listed) concern mainly the Artzamendi mount and Itxassou.

The church of Louhossoa is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and dates from the 17th century. According to legend, the hoof of Roland’s horse, Charlemagne’s nephew, broke a rock in two in a gorge where the Nive flows, at a place now called Le Pas de Roland. In Basque, this place is known as Atekagaitz, which means “bad passage”.
