Discover three castles in Alsace Verte: - Lutzelhardt: Ruin from the beginning of the 16th century including a small massive square keep and the remains of several dwellings, wells, cisterns…. - Schoeneck: Castle built around 1200, restored in the 16th and 17th centuries and listed since December 28, 1984 in the Historical Monuments. - Wineck: Vanguard post of Schoeneck castle, installed on a rocky ridge and dismantled at the end of the 17th century.

A forest walk for the whole family to discover the natural and historical riches of the Pays de Bitche! Leave the parking direction of the D162F, then follow the green ring markings. Walk through the bog forest, cross the forest road and then the meadow to reach the hamlet of Waldeck, which was originally a farmhouse built below Waldeck Castle. At the pass, climb the forest trail hairpin left to visit the castle Waldeck. Nice view from the platforms (be careful, the stairs are narrow and sometimes steep). Then go back in 2 and turn left then right towards Erbsenfelsen. At this last crossroads you can continue left to see Waldeck Pond.After the rocky Erbsenfelsen and its arch, turn right towards the pond of Hanau. At the junction with the forest road of Hanau, a boundary marker stands next to a partially buried blockhouse. Continue straight on the Waldecker Hubel Forest Road and return to the car park.

In a pleasant forest environment punctuated by ponds where wooded hills shimmer, the walker reaches the ruins of the Château de Falkenstein, the most imposing of the castles in the Pays de Bitche. Built in the 12th century on the orders of the Count of Lutzelbourg, in order to protect his possessions in the Haguenau Holy Forest, the castle was destroyed by a violent fire in 1564. The building burned for five days and nights.

A beautiful forest trail to discover the natural and historical riches at the Hanau and Lieschbach ponds and the charming old village of Waldeck. - A wooden pontoon allows access to the Lieschbach pond, which is classified as a nature reserve. - Falkenstein was built in the 12th century on a 117-metre rocky ridge and is the most important castle complex in Bitcherland. In 1564, only a few weeks after its sale to Philipp IV of Hanau-Lichtenberg, the castle was destroyed by a fierce fire after being struck by lightning. Some steps cut into the rock and an access ramp allow you to climb to the top of the ruin, where there are still some interesting remains. Along the way there are the following to discover : - The historical boundary stones from the 17th century marked the border between the former territories (County of Hanau and Duchy of Lorraine) at the time. - The pea rock with its round arch, where the rare peregrine falcon and the raven nest. - Waldeck Castle from the 13th century - The path to the peat pit of the Hanau pond You can download the GPX trail here :

A beautiful hike in the Northern Vosges mountains, punctuated by a few points of interest: the semi-troglodytic castle of Hohenfels, then a short detour to the Grand Wintersberg panoramic tower, which offers a superb 360° view! Departing from Niederbronn-les-Bains by car, follow the D653 towards Dambach, parking between the church and the village chapel – towards Neunhoffen, take Rue Principale then Rue du Lion, following the yellow cross markings of the Club Vosgien. Continue towards the ruins of Hohenfels Castle – pass through the Molloch Pass and follow the blue cross on the left towards the Riesthal Pass – Liese Passroad - Optional detour to the Grand Wintersberg panoramic tower – then return to Dambach. At the depature of Niederbronn-les-Bains with the car, follow D653 in the direction of Dambach – after Windstein, take D53 direction Obersteinbach. Passage by the hamlet of Wineckerthal, then after a few minute driving you will find on your left the carpark "des Trois Tilleuls" where your circuit starts. This trail follows an ancient Roman road all the way to the other side of the border, in Germany, along the picturesque path that runs alongside the majestic Altschlossfelsen rock, which can be translated to "old castle rock" because a small castle once existed there. It is also known with the nickname "The Colorado Rock". Starting from the 18th-century church in Roppeviller, with its Romanesque bell tower, the route joins the Helmut Kohl path. Less than a kilometre further on rises the Altschlossfelsen rock. . This rock is one of the largest in the Palatinate Massif. It stretches for almost 1.5 km and is up to 20 metres high in places. The countless caves, overhangs and other geological curiosities of the Altschlossfelsen are sure to surprise you! The Diana Rock and the three figures carved into the rock represent Diana the Goddess of the Hunt, Mars the God of War and Sylvanus the God of the Forest (or Hercules). A few kilometres from Bitche, the small village of Sturzelbronn is home to an old Cistercian abbey founded in the 12th century. Destroyed in the French Revolution, only a few vestiges remain: The statue of St Bernard de Clairvaux, founder of the abbey: erected in 1935 at the 800th anniversary of the commeration for the founding of the Cistercian abbey in 1135. The great gates put in place during the 18th century after the 30 year war, a symbol of the power that the abbey possessed. The lapidary calendar: one of the more rare and interesting remains of the abbey. Unique in France, this ingenious calendar with its double entry table allows you to calculate the time in weeks and in days that separate Christmas from the 1st Sunday of Lent. It is sealed in the inner entrance of the church. The tympanum from the old abbey church reflecting the sobriety of the Cistercian artistry. Other things to see: the pillory reflecting the right to justice served by the monks, a sandstone sarcophgi and the cellar cave.

The old site of Erbsenthal is half way between Sturzelbronn and Eguelshardt, more precisely in the wooded hills of Biesenberg (376m), Abstberg (375m), Erbsenberg (402m) and Rothenberg (358m). In the stream flow of the Rothenbach, and flowing through the Moosbach and Atlzinsel, the site covers over 3km and 33 hectares. The left bank (24,5ha) of the river is owned by the Commune of Sturzelbronn and the right bank (9ha) is the property of Eguelshardt. The lake is admired by all who have the opportunity to see it. The GR532 and the Tres Tabernae pass by the banks as well as several circular trails way-marked by the Club Vosgien staring from the Hanau Lake. The Chapel “Notre Dame des Bois” is 2 minutes away on foot. The Cistercians monks from Sturzelbronn took ice from this lake in winter and stocked it in a “glacier”, a type of igloo insulated with straw – an ancient method that was often used in this area. The ice could be used up until summer, either for direct consumption or for preserving their food, especially fish, as the lakes were full.

The little chapel of Notre Dame des Bois is one of the hidden treasures of Pays de Bitche. Next to the Erbsenweiher Lake, the altar of this sandstone chapel is lined with a stone tabernacle contained in an iron box. It has a crucifix and four candlesticks. During the last war, the roof of the chapel was damaged and the pews, chandeliers, objects of worship and the statue of the Virgin have since disappeared. The wall inside were covered with inscrptions: the soldiers on the Maginot line had engraved their names and the chapel had even been used as a stable for their horses. During th renovation in 1974, a new statue of the Virgin was blessed and the small bell that had been found was repaired.

The Rothenburg Castle is several hundred metres from the Falkenstein but has only a few visual remains. Its origins are unknown. The castle is cited in 1353 as belonging to the Count of Bitche. several years later, it became a hideout for highwaymen and was eventually destroyed by the Strasbourg militia. In the 16th century, it is sited as a small old ruined castle. Access: By the forestry road, a small steep path will take you up to the ruins.

The Erbsenfels Rock is one of the most beautiful natural curiosities in Pays de Bitche. This magnificent red sandstone rock is also known as the Arch Rock because of its shape formed by the erosion. The rock has a gaping hole which filters the sun leaving exceptional lighte effects amidst the vegetation. Situated along the GR532 (long distance footpath), the Erbsenfels is admired by all. This site can be discovered on foot, by bike or on horseback. Access: From Hanau Lake: follow the 6km circular walk From Waldeck Lake: follow the GR532 Note: This natural site is fragile so is pprotected. climbing is forbidden a s well as walking on the top. The raven and the peregrine falcon nest on this site between March and th end of July. During this period, we ask you to respect their tranquility and not disturb them.

Lieschbach Lake at Philippsbourg is a small peaceful peat mire and lake. On the outskirts of the villages, the 2km walk around the lake offers an exceptional panoramic of the forest and the rock outcrops. Thanks to a small wooden jetty, you can have a close up view of the wide variety of dragonflies that nest here. This lake is a nature reserve and is thus protected. Swimming and canoeing is strictly forbidden. You can reach the lake via the Hanau Lake following the path with the blue cross leading to the Falkenstein castle (35min). By car: coming from Haguenau towards Bitche, turn right after Philippsbourg into the small hamlet called Lieschbach. After 200m, turn right onto a track, continue 100m and there is a small forest car park on your right. Continue on foot to the lake (10min) Coming from Bitche: follow Haguenau and before entering Philippsbourg turn left into the hamlet of Lieschbach.

Altschlossfelsen translated from German means "old castle rock". It can be reached by the little village de Roppeviller. On reching one of the biggest sandstone rocks in the Palatinate, you will have crossed the German border. Having all the same geological features as the Northern Vosges, you will be astounded by this amazing re rock outcrop measuring 1500metres in length. Access: On foot, by the little village of Roppeviller to the north of Bitche. Nearby the Diane rock: 3 fgures sculptured in the stone representing Diane, Mars and Hercules. Note: During the period of March to july, protected species such as ravens and peregrine falcons may be nesting in the area so you must respect the site

From 1605 to 1608 more than 200 stones, mile stones and boundary limits, some sculptured, some not, staked out the boundaries between the Duchy of Lorrane and the Counts of Le Petite Pierre, Hanau Lichtenberg and the Duchy of Deux Ponts. Some can still be seen today between Soucht, Meisenthal and Rolbing and between Althorn, Baerenthal and Mouterhouse. Others pass between Eguelshardt and Philippsbourg: these ones have the arms of Hanau on one side and the Lorraine Cross on the other. They can be found along the forestry road to the west of Hanau Lake.
