Famous for the Battle which took place in 1916, the history of the city of Verdun goes back 30 centuries. Verdun has preserved for us many traces of its part in history. It is worth taking the time to stroll round the historic heart of the city and discover what it has to offer.

First of all, to park, there is quite a lot of space, and if the weather is nice, there are a few small streets perpendicular to the Grande Rue in Lucey that allow you to put the car in the shade. The circuit starts with a few paths going up behind the village towards the forest on 200-300 meters. Once you are in the forest, the principle is to zigzag up and wait for the plateau where the fort is located. The latter is covered by vegetation, and will only be very little visible. You will cross here and there some constructions annexed to the fort to brighten up the walk =) /! Watch out! The walk goes around the fort, but not inside. It is not advisable to try to venture inside, especially with small children or animals: there are many holes and not all parts inside are stable. And until the last news, it's not very legal ;-) The circuit layout will help you to find your way, but you can very well take the many small paths. Opened in 1946, Bergère de France is France's largest knitting wool producer. It controls the entire process from production to marketing and is one of the leaders in its market sector. In fact, it produces more than half the wool sold in France. The company occupies premises covering an area of 40,000 sq. metres. The guided tour takes visitors through the various workshop areas, from the arrival of the raw material to the packaging of balls of wool and the preparation of orders for despatch. Considering the age of the plantations, one can come to the conclusion that the park has been designed around 1880, probably by the great-great grandfather of the actual owners... In the 16th century, the aristocracy of the Duchy of Bar owned country-châteaux in the "Vallée de la Saulx", a few miles away from Bar-le-Duc. In 1506, Pierre Merlin, auditor of the Duke of Bar, had his castle built in Haironville. The general architecture of the castle de la Varenne is sober, the proportions very harmonious. The pigeon-house, a royal privilege, ends the left wing, proud of its 3000 pigeeon-holes.
