Champagne Nowack: Discover Vandieres and Its Surroundings

Day 1 of the cycle route created by the Marne Tourism Board to reach the Lake Der-Chantecoq from the town of Dormans. This tourist itinerary alternates between the V52 cycle path and the small roads of the vineyards, in order to enrich the journey with cultural visits. This first stage starts at Dormans station, which can be reached by train from Paris, and ends in the charming village of Mutigny, surrounded by vineyards. The route follows the cycle path to Damery, before branching off to Fleury-la-Rivières and then Hautvillers. It then descends to Dizy and briefly picks up the V52 to Aÿ-Champagne before continuing through the vineyards to Mutigny.

This second stage starts in the village of Mutigny and ends in Châlons-en-Champagne, the capital of the Marne. The route begins in the vineyards and passes through the charming little town of Aÿ, before following the cycle path to Châlons-en-Champagne, where a range of cultural activities await you.

From marshes to rivers or waterfalls, from woods to crops, the Sarrins' walk evolves between the villages of Roucy, Guyencourt and Bouffignereux. The first one has a feudal mound, a church of the Reconstruction and an old priory, the second one a restored wash-house, the last one a church with a portal of the 13th century and a farm-castle.

In the mid-12th century, the Latin name for the commune seems to have been Curtis Superior – rather posh, isn't it? – but it is now known as Concevreux. Almost bordering the Marne (we are here in Champagne Picarde), its location near the Chemin des Dames and in the Aisne valley made it a rear base for French troops during the First World War. This walk will take you to the outskirts of the Petit Marais area, towards the heights overlooking the town, before returning to the church along the canal running alongside the Aisne. Enjoy your walk! 

This trail takes you on a journey back in time - to around 7,000 years ago - starting from the village of Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes. In the 1970s, this cillage - and others in the vicinity in this part of the Aisne valley - became the subject of archaeological research and acquired a real scientific reputation. In the wake of these experimental practices, a first Neolithic village was rebuilt, but unfortunately destroyed by fire a few years later. So it's thanks to a new initiative by the local council that we have this new prehistoric house (rebuilt on a smaller scale), along with explanatory panels detailing the settlement and way of life of these sedentary farmers, who settled here 5,000 years before our era... This loop on the road and through the fields will then take you to the nearby village of Chaudardes, before returning to your starting point...

South of the Chemin des Dames, on the northern slopes of the Aisne valley, this hike highlights a little-known type of habitat, built directly into the rock. The troglodytic village of Paissy still boasts numerous crevices housing houses and outbuildings.

Running along the Oise to Aisne canal, this route allows visitors to discover the many devices developed by man to exploit the river network. A reminder of the golden age of canals, the canal bridge spanning the Aisne is one of the highlights of the tour.

Built around 1390, this keep is a monumental reminder of Crouy-sur-Ourcq's medieval heritage. Nestling at the bottom of the valley and built at the height of the 100 Years' War, it is the finest jewel in the crown of the Ourcq Valley. To delimit their vast territory, the Counts of Valois built defensive fortresses, often ostentatiously to show off their power and wealth. On the border with the lands of the Counts of Champagne, it was strategic to build this keep on the banks of the River Ourcq from the end of the 14th century. You can discover this keep, the only one in northern Seine-et-Marne and listed as a Historic Monument in 1962, during the European Heritage Days, or take a look at it from the outside during a walk in Crouy-sur-Ourcq.

Among those few buildings, only one is still intact and accessible to the public: the Auberge du Lion d'Or (the Golden Lion's Inn) in Juniville. Located in front of the house Verlaine used to rent, not far from his farm, the inn has become the Verlaine Museum today. In this accommodation "for walkers and riders", the furniture has not moved: time has stopped and the soul remained intact.  More than just a simple reminder of the poet, this 1500m² place will make you revisit his life and work thanks to a unique iconographic collection, a quality commented visit, the provision of his complete works (prose, poetry and letters) and, of course, the particular atmosphere we can feel as we walk in.  After your visit, you'll still have to discover the 1000m² old garden, the temporary exhibitions and the pub. INTERPRETATION TRAIL Departing from the Verlaine Museum, the Juniville interpretation trail invites you to discover the heritage of Juniville by walking in the footsteps of Paul Verlaine while retracing the life and work of the poet. 9 viewpoints have been created in the village, each of them with informative consoles, silhouettes, informative slides or poems whisperers. To go further in your stroll, your knowledge of Verlaine or simply have fun with your family, ask for the booklet "Fair day in Juniville with Verlaine" at the museum. Through its riddles, illustrations and anecdotes, you will learn more about the beautiful heritage of Juniville! Listed as a remarkable garden this venue is worth a detour... The garden overlooks the valley of Petit Morin. Its pièce de resistance is undoubtedly the plant cathedral, an ambitious project carried out over 6 years and inaugurated in June 2017. This verdant temple is open to persons of all spiritual traditions. Consecrated to family love, the cathedral is accentuated by sculptures from Robert Arnoux and stained glass windows by Laurence Weber. The garden also features a unique skeleton, made of steel and stone, rather than bone. It is intended to evolve over time, allowing itself to be immersed in branches and leaves with the passage of the seasons to ultimately become a "natural body"! The garden covers 7 hectares. During the course of your visit, you'll encounter extraordinary plants and unique architectural elements, such as rare trees, wild grasses and secret passages that can propel us to another dimension. You can also find mystical creatures, such as giant fairies, or a swing that harkens back to childhood. Let's not forget the huts that are "not like the others"! Le Point du Jour Garden also serves as a tea room, the perfect boutique for original gift ideas and a venue for concerts and other major events… This garden was voted the 2010 Garden of the Year by the French Association of Garden and Horticulture Journalists (AJJH) and now boasts the French Ministry of Culture's official label of a “Remarkable Garden”.

It was constructed in February, 1886, thanks to the citizens ‘application. “…it would be a very useful purpose for the citizens the wash house  to be indoor and not to be expensive…”

This museum of social anthropology has presented since opening in 1995 material witnesses to traditional society in the North East of the Seine-et-Marne, as well as municipal collections on Pierre Mac Orlan (1882-1970), a writer of "social fantasy", who lived for about forty years in Saint-Cyr-sur-Morin. In the old inn, “La Moderne” (a building that has been completely reconstructed and extended with a modern wing), a permanent exhibition evokes agriculture, breeding, village and semi urban crafts, the use of raw materials and the rural habitat in a sector heavily affected by the urban expansion of Marne-La Vallée. Specific areas are available to consult documents and videos on regional social anthropology the result of extensive collection work in the field.
