GR®223 - Biville - Sciotot

GR®223 - Biville - Sciotot

The first part of this 22 km stage runs along the top of the dunes in Biville, looking out to sea. (If you prefer, you can leave the GR and walk along the beach on the coastal right-of-way). The sea makes way for this magnificent dune landscape, measuring more than 10 km in length and 500 m in width. A listed Natural Zone of Interest for Ecology, Flora and Fauna, this protected area is home to 183 identified plant and animal species. Please protect this fragile natural environment: no camping or campfires. The path then heads back to the sea as you arrive in Siouville-Hague, a top surfing town. Take the opportunity to try this activity at the Cotentin Surf Club. The GR then heads towards Dielette harbour, before turning left to go round the nuclear power station in Flamanville, built on the site of an old iron mine. In Flamanville, enjoy a stroll in the park of the château, which is accessible free of charge all year round. In the distance, you can see Flamanville headland. From the top of the cliffs, culminating at 89 m above sea level, there’s an incredible view of the huge beach in Sciotot. You’ll go past the buildings of an old French navy semaphore dating back to 1867. It has been restored and is now a restaurant and a stopover gîte that’s very popular with hikers. The finish is further down, on the fine sandy beach of Sciotot. This is a great spot to watch the surfers hitting the waves and to admire the sun setting over the sea.

GR®223 - Omonville-la-Rogue - Nez des Voidries

This 18 km stage will take you along the customs officers’ path, where you’ll discover different buildings that were once used to watch the coastline. Enjoy a coffee on the picturesque harbour in Omonville-la-Rogue before heading west across the pebbles. Note: take care when walking, as the plovers often nest in the wrack line. Next, you’ll walk between the sea and the fields, going over several stiles. Take a break at the old semaphore at the Pointe de Jardeheu. Now a gîte, this site has fantastic views of the sea and the rugged coastline of La Hague, and is a great place to enjoy one of the gorgeous sunsets. The coastal path goes past rocky coves to the beach in Saint-Martin bay, and ends in Plainvic inlet. Carry on along the coast until you get to the D45, after a few steps. Turn right onto the path to Port Racine a picturesque site that’s full of charm. This little harbour is said to be the smallest in France, at just 800 m², with an 11 m opening between the two jetties. Carry on along the coastal path and head down to the right, past the fort and the Roche Gélétan. After going over several stiles, you’ll reach the semaphore, then the bunker. Walk across the pebbles again until you get to Goury harbour, known for its busy lifeboat station and numerous sea rescue operations. From here, you can see La Hague lighthouse, built to signal the Alderney race, one of the most powerful ocean currents in Europe. Enjoy the wild and unspoilt landscapes that look rather like Ireland. From Goury harbour, head left between the dry stone walls towards La Roche hamlet. Go past the old lavoir (wash house), then follow the path that winds its way to Écalgrain bay. Once again, there are some spectacular views from the top of the cliffs, looking out to sea and along the coastline. When you reach the D401, turn right onto the path to avoid the road, go across the car park below and take the little bridge over the stream. Then head up the path on the right and go over Les Vaux stream. You’ll go past the superb Cul Rond cove, before climbing up to the old semaphore at Nez de Voidries, your destination! Enjoy a well-earned rest with a fantastic view!

GR®223 - Nez des Voidries - Biville

At the start of this 16 km stage, take in the exceptional views of Nez de Jobourg, an unmissable site in La Manche, with cliffs that are some of the highest in continental Europe. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Channel Islands of Alderney, Sark, Jersey and Guernsey. The path continues in a rollercoaster along the rugged coast of La Hague, which looks rather like Ireland. Take a break in Herqueville, at the Treize Vents viewpoint. From there, you have one of the most beautiful views in La Manche, with the wild and unspoilt coastline on one side, and the vast Vauville bay with its endless dunes on the other. A short stop in Vauville is a must, with its château and botanical garden, and its 12th to 15th century priory and church. A bit further down, you can see the Vauville wetlands. These freshwater marshes are protected from the sea by a narrow strip of dunes measuring just 50 m in width. The Vauville nature reserve is home to 2 300 species, and access is free, but specific regulations must be followed. As you leave the village, take the path up the hill and continue along the GR overlooking the dunes and the sea. (If you prefer, you can continue along the vast beach, following the coastal right-of-way). The breathtaking destination of this stage is just a few kilometres further on, in the fragile dunes of Biville, which reach up to 100 m in height. This is the perfect place to admire the sun setting over the sea and lighting up the endless dune landscape: a magical moment! Please protect this fragile natural environment: no camping or campfires.
