GR®223 - Cap Lévi - Cherbourg-en-Cotentin

For 19 km, you’ll walk along tracks, with views of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin in the distance, your destination for this stage. Just a few hundred metres from the fort, walk past the pretty Cap Lévi harbour, protected by the bay of the same name. For a long time, the Romans used this harbour as a place of transit to England. It now shelters small fishing and sailing boats. Carry on along the coast towards Anse du Brick. This fine sandy beach, at the foot of the cliffs, is a top spot for surfing and other watersports. Leaving the l’Anse de Brick behind you, take the footbridge over the D116 and head up the road to the viewpoint. The path gradually heads away from the coast to climb up for some fantastic views of the harbour in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, the biggest artificial harbour in the world. (An alternative route is possible if you want to continue along the coast. Take the pedestrian right-of-way, marked by a yellow circle). In the hamlet Douet Picot, turn right to continue on the main GR route or take the GR®223A, a variant that crosses the southern part of the town, known as the “Balcons de Cherbourg”. You’ll get back to the coast at Port du Becquet. Nestled between two rocky outcrops, the port was built in 1783. It was the main place of embarkation for shipping stones from the nearby quarries to be used in the construction of the great jetty in Cherbourg harbour. Finally, walk along Collignon beach, the maritime boulevard and the port area, before arriving at the former transatlantic liner terminal, which now houses the Cité de la Mer, the destination of this stage. Take the opportunity to explore the town of Cherbourg and its best spots.

GR®223 - Cherbourg-en-Cotentin - Omonville-la-Rogue

Get ready for 22 km from the town of Cherbourg to the wild paths of La Hague! Before heading off, enjoy a moment in Cherbourg, the biggest town in La Manche, to discover its unmissable sights. With the Cité de la Mer, Cherbourg umbrella factory, theatre, shops, museum, military port and artificial harbour, the town has plenty of activities and visits for you to enjoy. To start your hike, head to the west side of the swing bridge, then walk along Quai Alexandre III towards the north. Next, turn right towards the sailing school and Port Chantereyne. Then go behind the swimming pool and carry on towards Avenue de Cessart then Rue de l’Abbaye. After the naval fire station, carry on towards the entrance to the Arsenal, then walk alongside the old fortifications. Next, go along the unmissable harbour for 2 km, taking the cycle path. Enjoy the fantastic sea views, then go round the naval training centre towards Querqueville. Follow the seafront, go past the campsite and the sailing school and continue towards Urville-Nacqueville. Head to the beach before carrying on along a path parallel to the sea until you reach the D45. You’ll arrive in Landemer, where the great views of the rugged coastline are well worth a short stop. From Landemer, turn right onto a dirt track that leads to a car park, where you’ll have some wonderful sea views from Cap Lévi to the east to Omonville harbour to the west. Carry on along the GR®223, walking between the contrasting cliffs of La Hague. You can take a detour through Gruchy hamlet (20 minutes return), the birthplace of the painter Jean-François Millet. The house in which he was born is now a museum. Carry on along the coastal path to the car park in Quervière bay. After the ruins of the farm La Cotentine, head to the old fort. Go down the cliff to the harbour in Omonville-la-Rogue, the destination of this stage. Bonus of this stage: the possibility of arriving at Cherbourg station.

Espace cyclosport - Tour de la Hague

With its "Espace Cyclosport" label, the French Cycling Federation wishes to develop the practice of cycling. Including the English Channel in this programme is a real guarantee of quality for cycling enthusiasts. The labelled itineraries are sponsored by local champions to help you discover their training grounds. What's the Pro's opinion? " Starting from Cherbourg and the famous " Cité de la Mer ", this itinerary will take you, between moor and sea, to the Hague. To begin our loop, a warm-up in the port city is de rigueur! We head for the Quincampoix valley, which includes a few steep passages to reach the town of Bricquebec. Its cycling club is home to many licensees and it will not be rare that you will find some fellow travelers on these roads A few kilometres after Bricquebec, direction due west with the wind as the first enemy. Before arriving on the coast, a break will be welcome for some at Les Pieux. Afterwards, there will be no time to stop because the difficulties will follow one after the other. And if the west wind or the rain gets in the way, the route will be even more difficult on the winding roads of The Hague. If the thighs suffer, the eyes do not: charming little harbours, windswept lighthouses, panoramic views of the sea and the valleys, changing light, ... Once you have passed through Gréville-Hague, the last 12 kilometres will be flatter and will allow you to reach the Cherbourg agglomeration quietly with a favourable prevailing wind. » Amaël MOINARD
