At the gates of Avranches, a city to discover, the circuit goes into the bocage. The paths are wide, well entrenched, then they become narrower. Some technical passages at Saint-Martin-des-Champs (Chemin de la Butte) and Saint-Senier-sous-Avranches (Chemin de l'Angotière and Le Bois Pépin) give some difficulty to this route which remains very accessible.

It's a bee above our heads that a miss, a gardener and beekeeper, takes us through the city, from tree to tree. That's how she surveys it, by measuring them. She observes their architecture, compares them and has fun distinguishing the biggest from the smallest collected in the Jardin des Plantes. She contemplates them from the ground and details them, imagining them in her garden... But always, she leaves the top to the bee. She goes on her way again, strolling through the city, counting her steps under the avenue of old lime trees. Then it takes its turn to rise in the Jardin Bergevin. This loop offers unique views of Mont-Saint-Michel. At Petit-Celland, after the site of the Three Crosses, the path winds through the conifers and reaches a ridge dominating the meanders of the Sée. From the ancient city of Avranches, it follows the coastal path to reach the Pointe du Grouin. The view of the bay, facing Mont-Saint-Michel, is splendid. The high cliffs of Champeaux, the Vauban hut, this former customs shelter from the 17th century, and the wild site of the Lude valley follow one another. From the Valley of the Painters, the path crosses the moor and leads to the Balcons de Saint Pierre near the Abbaye de la Lucerne. From valley to valley, the route leads to the medieval streets of Villedieu-Les-Poêles before reaching Le Petit-Celland via the ridges overlooking the Sée valley.

With its "Espace Cyclosport" label, the French Cycling Federation wishes to develop the practice of cycling. Including the English Channel in this programme is a real guarantee of quality for cycling enthusiasts. The labelled itineraries are sponsored by local champions to help you discover their training grounds. The circuit of the South Channel, full of false flats, climbs, beautiful flat but also steep roads, will make you work on your endurance. It also lends itself to more specific exercises, such as split training for example. It all starts in Avranches with a first straight section at the top of the ridge to cross the Channel in its width. You will be halfway around Mortain! In summer, it is the opportunity to go down to the waterfalls to refresh yourself and enjoy the place. You will quickly reach the bay of Mont Saint-Michel afterwards. The final climb will require you to draw on your last resources... As a reward, enjoy the view of the Wonder from the Jardin des Plantes.

Covering an area of 500 kilometres, the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel stretches from the Pointe du Grouin in Brittany to Champeaux in Normandy. It belongs to the club of the most beautiful bays in the world and was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. It is the scene of the highest tides in Europe and is home to a multitude of animal species.

This walk will allow the family to discover the high tides and the tidal bore phenomenon. The tidal bore is this small wave which forms at the time of the rising tide and which gets bigger as you approach the mouth of the Sée and the Sélune rivers. The most courageous face it in kayak or surfing. Most of them take advantage of the show, especially from the Grouin du Sud.

Cycle from the greenway used by major cycle tourism routes (La Véloscénie, La Vélomaritime and VéloWestNormandy) at Pontaubault to Avranches station, bypassing the mouth of the Sélune.

This 18 km stage is the final part of the GR®223, leading to Mont Saint-Michel, the ultimate reward after all of these kilometres on foot. After the bridge over the river Sélune in Pontaubault, you’ll alternate between walking on the dikes and in the salt meadows. In Flagé, follow the road that goes behind the polders all the way to Roche Torin point. There’s a picnic area here with a fantastic view of Mont Saint-Michel and its spectacular bay. You need to go around the point then carry on walking in the salt meadows. Next, you’ll come to another picnic area at Le Rivage. Leaving the area behind you, take the dike that runs along Saint-Avit polder. The finish of the stage is at the footbridge in La Caserne. This is also where the shuttles to Mont Saint-Michel leave from. If you still have some energy left, you can also walk to Mont Saint-Michel, which is around 2 km from here: a last effort before you climb the steps of the famous Mont! Take the opportunity to visit the Abbey, stroll through the picturesque streets or try crossing the bay on foot. During the spring tides, you can watch as Mont Saint-Michel becomes an island again: a magical experience. Note: you’ll go through several gates on this section: please be sure to shut them again behind you.

The reputation of the Avranches Garden is largely based on its privileged location. This suspended lookout point between heaven and earth in which one takes the immense bay of Mont Saint-Michel with a single glance, inspired various 19th century writers among whom the most famous are Guy de Maupassant, Victor Hugo or Stendhal. In 2005, as part of the Grand site du Mont Saint-Michel operation, a vast rehabilitation project began. The landscape architects remodelled the park to give it back its vocation as a garden of plants by designing 12 different areas ranging from the garden of camelias, rhododendrons, to maples area975, including the cherry blossom meadow and the School of fruits. The garden is accessible to people with reduced mobility. With signage suitable to lovers of botany and youngsters alike, convivial space and playground, the visitor will find there a lively place for everyone.

A narrow, paved street leads to the courtyard of the house where Bergevin (a 19th century painter from Avranches) lived. Built in 1773, this house currently accommodates the town heritage department. The remarkable staircase of the paved courtyard leads to the top of the curtain wall, converted into a dungeon in the 19th century, which offers a magnificent panorama over the town roofs and the Mont Saint-Michel.

The castle was built around 950 by “Onfroi Le Dane” on the remains of the old Roman site. A succession of enclosures and moats were added. From the keep at the heart of the various districts of Avranches, you can view the panorama over the Bay and the Sée valley.

AN ECO-MUSEUM WHICH EXPLAINS MAN, NATURE AND LANDSCAPES Situated right on the edge of this vastness, the ‘Écomusée de la Baie” is an interpretive centre where you discover the workings of the Bay’s natural environment, the way man has used this very special area for centuries, and the evolution of its landscapes through the ages. PERMANENT EXHIBITION : PROTECTING THE BIOLOGICAL BALANCE(S) Part of the permanent exhibition helps to explain the evolution of the fauna and flora throughout the seasons as well as the characteristics of the different natural environments. Protecting these biological balances has become a major challenge in today’s society. But man also lives in this environment and has always made the most of its riches. In the past, salt was extracted by a unique process no longer used nowadays. In the salt-maker’s workshop you can re-discover this technique….and you even leave with a sachet of salt from the Bay! There is also fishing and shooting. Mussels and salt-marsh sheep are today’s gastronomic highlights of the Bay. All this is explained in the exhibition. How has man transformed the Bay’s landscapes? THE ‘ECOMUSEE DE LA BAIE’ : IT IS ALSO ABOUT CULTURE, EDUCATION AND TOURISM Every year, temporary exhibitions on the Bay’s history, landscapes or traditional professions are on show to visitors. Magnificent 19-hectare landscaped park, Monument Historique and Jardin Remarquable label, at the heart of which nestles an 18th-century château.
