GR®223 - Coutainville-Plage - Regnéville-sur-Mer

Are you ready for a 23 km stage around Regnéville inlet with its unspoilt landscapes and wide-open spaces? From the centre of the seaside resort of Agon-Coutainville, head along the seafront towards the dunes. Walk on the beach past Le Passous sailing school. After the wooden chalet, cross a grove of trees to join the coastal path, taking Chemin de la Buttière. From there, head towards the wild Pointe d’Agon-Coutainville. Then follow the GR223 through the dunes and walk through a pretty grove of pine trees. Before you, you’ll see the Lechanteur monument and the famous Agon lighthouse with its red lantern. Carry on in that direction towards the orientation table and enjoy the view of the dunes and the sea stretching as far as the eye can see on your right, and on your left, Regnéville inlet with its little boats. From Agon lighthouse, cross the road towards the salt meadows on the edge of Regnéville inlet. You’ll walk along the estuary for 2.5 km, accompanied by free-roaming sheep. Make sure you shut any gates along the path. Then leave the inlet on the left and follow the road to the edge of Tourville marsh, and on to the little bridge. Carry on towards the church in Heugueville-sur-Sienne following the coastal path close to the D650. Leave the little village on your left and continue to follow the inlet for 800 m. Here, you’ll cross the saltmarshes again, climbing over stiles, before arriving at the Pont de la Roque. Enjoy a break at the bridge, where you’ll find picnic tables, before heading off again for the last part of this stage. Take the grassy path next to the fields towards the saltmarshes. Once again, sheep will be your travelling companions! Now walk along the other side of the inlet towards the village of Regnéville-sur-Mer. Go through the gate on your left and carry on for 50 m before turning right and taking the D249 towards Le Prey. Note: at high tide, it’s better to go inland following the D156 then the D249. You’re on the last stretch! Take the path that leads through the inlet, go through the little gate and walk across the salt meadows. From here, there’s a wonderful view of the Pointe d’Agon and the Sienne estuary. You can admire some of the path you’ve walked since the start of this stage opposite you. Leave the salt meadows and take the D156 towards the slipway. Carry on to the municipal campsite in Regnéville, with its panoramic view. Finally, you’ll arrive at the Château de Regnéville-sur-Mer. Enjoy a stroll around this old fishing village with its picturesque charm.

GR®223 - Regnéville-sur-Mer - Saint-Martin-de-Bréhal

This 18 km stage takes you to Saint-Martin-de-Bréhal via the seaside resort of Hauteville-sur-Mer. Before leaving, enjoy a stroll around Regnéville-sur-Mer, a former fishing village with old-world charm. Don’t miss the lime kilns, a legacy of the dynamic activity here in the past. From Regnéville, take the D49 before joining the D156. Carry on along the D73 to the car park by the beach. At the entrance to the car park, take a left and cross the field. Between the fences, the path takes you to the sea. From here, walk along the seawall on the left to Rue des Garennes to reach the seafront heading into Hauteville-sur-Mer. This lovely seaside resort is particularly popular with families for its different activities, including watersports. Cross the resort walking along the promenade, then turn left towards the sailing school. Next, take Rue d’Annoville before turning onto the path through the dunes, on the right after the bend. You’ll head slightly away from the sea. At the car park, the path continues on the road to the left for 600 m to the hamlet of Les Peupliers. In this area, you’ll cross the “Mielles”, sandy soils where carrots are grown and fertilised with seaweed. These carrots are renowned for their soft texture. Carry on to the right on the path edged by poplars and then cross the D220 on a small road. Carry on along the gravel track, going round a wood and past fields of vegetable crops. You’ll arrive in La Planche Guillemette. After the Mielles, welcome to Les Salines. Salt was harvested here from the 8th century until the 19th century. Take the road to Les Salines, going over a bridge, then turn right onto Route du Moulin. Next, leave this road to take the path that goes along La Vanlée inlet. Carry on along the small road until you get to the fascinating tidal causeway. Crossing the inlet towards the sea, the road is completely submerged during spring tides with high coefficients. Next, turn left through the saltmarshes after the sheepfolds. Go through a metal gate and walk on the sandy path. Once you get to the Ecurie des Mielles, turn right towards the sailing school. You’ll arrive in Saint-Martin-de-Bréhal along the promenade. Enjoy a break in this lovely seaside resort that’s popular for its watersports school and its family friendly atmosphere.

GRP 7 Les trésors cachés du Coutançais

Presentation Looking for hidden treasures, eastern loop (Coutances/ Marigny/ Coutances). Enjoy roaming freely by taking the long-distance footpath. Discover the hidden treasures of Coutances, (GRP7). Remarkable points on the stroll 1- The church of Saint Nicolas de Coutances: the first church of Saint Nicolas, built in the XIVth century, was very damaged during the Hundred Years War, then during the religious wars of the XVIth century and finally in 1944. It remains however a magnificent example of the architectural persistence of the Norman Gothic style until the classical period. 2- Saint-Martin's church (17th century) in Monthuchon: it houses a Virgin of Pity and a listed lectern from the 15th century. 3- St Méen d'Ancteville fountain: located at the bottom of the cemetery, it has the reputation of curing a skin disease called rifle or psora 4- The Terrace of Muneville le Bingard: many small, well-preserved, shaded paths invite you to daydream. At the bend of one of them, you will discover a manor house of the XVIth century or a charming farm... like "La Terrasse". 5- The draught horse festival at La Ronde Haye: in August, with a parade of horse-drawn carriages, horse races, a handling test and the famous donkey race. 6- The Manor of Grand Taute in Saint Sauveur Lendelin: it was built by Jean le Coq, a judicial officer. Discover the life of a rural seigniory during the wars of religion. A very elaborate defensive system, perfectly preserved, protected the residence against possible enemy incursions 7- The monument to the memory of Robert Lee Duffy at the Menilbus : monument to the memory of the fighter pilot Robert Lee Duffy, of the 404th Fighter Group, whose P47 Thunderbolt plane crashed near the Mesnilbus on 27 July 1944. The aircraft was unearthed in 1992 and the pilot was identified, he had survived after parachuting and was living in the USA in Colorado. 8- The Tancredi Museum of Hauteville la Guichard: this museum recalls the epic of the Norman kings of Sicily, who left Hauteville in the 14th century to found a powerful kingdom in southern Italy 9- The German military cemetery in Marigny : the German military cemetery gathers more than 11 000 graves of German soldiers killed during the battle of Normandy. 9a- The Cobra Memorial in Marigny : the Cobra Memorial commemorates the operation of 25 July 1944, in the heart of Marigny, entrusted to the 7th US Corps of General Collins, which will change the course of the battle in the Cotentin and precipitate the liberation of France. 10- The castle of Carantilly: the current castle, built on an older manor, dates from the eighteenth century. The 2 facades are very different while retaining the same architecture: the north facade with a courtyard of honor lined with outbuildings, deliberately severe, and the south facade open to the park, with many sculptures and openings. The pond is designed for walkers, sportsmen, fishermen, young and old. 11- The church of Saint Remy Quibou: the church of Saint Remy is a building rebuilt in 1954 by taking advantage of the elements remaining in place: stained glass, tapestry and Stations of the Cross. It is one of the successes of the reconstruction after 1944. 12- Bonfossé Manor (15th / 17th century) whose chapel is listed as a historical monument (frescoes in the chapel). 13- Panorama on the hills of coutançais on the left and towards the marshes of contentin on the right. 14- The castle of Cerisy la Salle: the remains of the old castle, probably dating from the 16th century, are still visible on the N side: part of the enclosure and the base of a watchtower. Damaged during the wars of religion, it seems to have served as a stone quarry for the new construction of the seventeenth: bastioned castle manors of the mid-sixteenth century. 14b- The monument to the airmen of Cerisy la Salle : erected in memory of the Australian pilot and the 6 members of the British crew of a Lancaster bomber which crashed on the night of June 6th, 1944. 15- Montpinchon: numerous small, well-preserved, deep and shaded paths invite you to daydream. At the bend of one of them, you will discover a 16th century manor house or a charming farm... like "La Terrasse". 16- Notre-Dame and Sainte-Barbe de Savigny church (11th / 12th century): 17th century facade, Romanesque nave with a bell tower planted on the crosspiece. Romanesque capitals from the beginning of the 12th century with animal motifs (lions,...). Wall paintings from the 13th century.
