The Route of the Abbeys on Horseback is a 155 km long equestrian hiking route specially designed for riders where the tarred portions have been kept to a minimum To be discovered on the route: Cerisy-la-Forêt: abbey, jewel of Romanesque art, founded in 1032. 1 - Saint-Fromond: Norman Romanesque abbey founded in the 7th century. 2 - Towpath along the Vire river. Most of the route follows the Vire river, crossing undulating wooded paths typical of the Normandy bocage, offering total immersion in a soothing natural setting. You'll pass by the Roches de Ham, a rocky massif dominating the valley and offering an exceptional panorama of the meandering Vire. A slight detour will take you to this unmissable viewpoint. Another curiosity on the route is the Grotte du Diable, an intriguing site tucked away in the heart of nature, fuelling local legends and inviting you to take a mystical break in the middle of the race. Stage common to the Vélomaritime and the Vélo WestNormandy. The short distance between Saint-Lô and Condé-sur-Vire takes you through the most picturesque part of the valley. All around you: peaceful pastures, sheep, horses, hedges full of wild flowers. And everywhere on the road, bars and crêperies where you can enjoy local products.

The circuit is sporty. Experienced bikers will appreciate it particularly for its relief and the technical difficulties it presents: steep climbs or sometimes dangerous descents. Put your feet up! The Grotto of the Chapel was built in memory of a group of parishioners who took refuge there during the bombings in 1944 and were saved. 4 - The Old Manor of the XIth and XIIth century. Not to be visited 5 - Le Tonnerre is an abandoned hamlet with great charm. This castle of the 16th and 17th centuries comprises three wings built around a main courtyard which opens to the west onto the Cour aux Canons. Located at Torigni-sur-Vire, the ancient fiefdom of two descendants of William the Conqueror, this beautiful dwelling belonged to the famous Matignon family for more than three centuries. It suffered substantial damage during the Revolution. Flanked by an armoured pavilion which was added in 1962 on its west side, the south wing is the only part to have survived post-revolutionary deterioration. In 1817, it was purchased by the municipality who, in 1840, had the east pavilion built to reestablish the architectural balance. On 12 June 1944, after Torigni town centre was bombarded, only the four walls of the castle remained. The efforts of successive town councils to restore the castle, while not returning it to its original splendour, have ensured that it remains an impressive Historic Monument. Today, the castle houses the council services, a meeting room and two reception rooms. The gallery on the 1st floor regularly hosts temporary exhibitions and themed displays (paintings, photographs, postcards, etc.).

The public garden of the Cour aux Canons is a terrace typically inspired by Italian Renaissance architecture and offers a panoramic view of the city: castle, ponds, old town... In this very pleasantly flowered city, your steps will naturally guide you towards the promenade of the ponds. You will discover the remains of the Matignon-Grimaldi park (17th century) including a very pretty waterfall, the health courses, the playgrounds for your children, the mini golf, nature in the heart of the city.

The Chapel on the Vire, nestling in the heart of the Vire Valley, has been a pilgrimage site since the 12th century. Today, this elegant neo-Gothic chapel of red stone shelters two statues from the 14th and 16th centuries which have miraculously survived. The 15th century main altar is in white stone with superb reliefs in albaster. Permanent exhibitions evoke the importance of pilgrimage over the centuries.
