By continuing your road, a passage by the Rock of the Virgin in Roche-Canilhac will offer you another surprising panorama. The next stage of this périble leads you to Saint-Urcize, village raised on a basaltic rock dominating the valleys of the Miserable wretch and the Bès. The old houses, the narrow alleys, the places decorated with fountains, the vestiges of fortifications and the ruins of the former fort give to the city a medieval character and give evidence of its very former origin. The magnificent Romanic church Saint-Peter/Saint Michel du XIIème century, one of the most beautiful of Haute-Auvergne, invites you in the pondering: limp in comb and bell of 1583 (one of the most former of France), ambulatory bent in quarter circle, frescoes of time, incredible stained-glass windows, chalice ... An inescapable building. To note the very beautiful panorama on the tray of Aubrac (we see three departments there!) and on the village since the Rock of the Virgin. In another book, a few years ago, the director Jean-Pierre Marchand shot the film «La Dictée» at the village school premises. The high plateau of the Planeze was formed by the lava flows from the Cantal Volcano. Today, the Planèze sees the revival of a local crop, the blonde lentils of Saint-Flour. From Saint-Flour, head towards Tanavelle and enjoy the 360° panoramic viewpoint over the Planèze, the Margeride and the Monts du Cantal. Continue towards Paulhac and Narse de Lascols, a protected area for migratory birds. The village of Bélinay, with its XIV century neo-Gothic chapel and its castle, is known as the jewel of the Épie valley. Follow the road to Col de Prat de Bouc at the foot of the Plomb du Cantal, the highest peak of the Monts du Cantal (1855 m). This outstanding natural site is ideal for walking and hiking as well as watching migrating birds and discovering the local fauna and mountain flora. Drive through the lovely village of Cézens and then head for Cussac and Saint-Amand’s Romanesque Church. Continue towards Neuvéglise and explore the small village of Orcières and the typical architecture of its houses. Suggested visit nearby: the vast Lanau reservoir and its water sports. At Sériers, drive along the “Megalithic Route” and discover the dolmens of Grand Bois and Table du Loup, witnesses to the Neolithic age. Additional sites are listed in the Megaliths Circuit information leaflet. In Les Ternes, you can admire the XV century feudal castle and its grounds. Drive back up towards Villedieu and visit Ribeyrevieille and Bouzentès, villages famous for their stone cutters.

From the pittoresque village of Oradour, a steep descent in the wood to discover the ruins of a former water mill and a surprising waterfall... D - Leave the car in front of the village hall. Observe the fountain and the old stone cross with the Christ. Continue on foot in direction of Sainte-Marie. 1 - Take the path which descends opposite the church and follow the sandy way. 2 - Keep left and cross the wood. The path decends to the river Epie.

A likeable hike, especially in summer because the path is mostly in the shadow. A descent and an ascent a little bit exhausting. Possibility to reach the footbridge of Malineux over the river Epie which links Oradour and Neuveglise. D – DEPART: ORADOUR in front of the fountain near the "mairie". After the church follow the direction to MONS. 1 - Follow the tarred road until the oratory (at right) and take the good path to the right (sign "Malineux"). 2 - At the 4 path crossing take a path to the left enclosed by steep hills which descends to the gorges. 3 - At the crossing, at the depth of the gorges take the path to the left leading to the banks of the River Truyère level with the mouth of the River Epie. 300 m left the new built bridge "Passerelle de Malineux" which connnects Oradour with Neuvéglise. Return to the level of the crossing and take a path to the left which follows the River Truyère. 4 - Climb back by a good path (View to the Truyère gorges) until “4 path crossing” then return towards ORADOUR by the same path. Mountainbike: very difficult level, not recommended.

Cantal Mountains are situated in the heart of the Cantal Massif which is one of the largest group of volcanoes in Europe. They were formed by successive volcanic eruptions 30 million years ago. The Planeze of Saint Flour and the Margaride situated on the periphery of the Cantal volcano are distinctive for their crystalline soil. D – DEPART: ORADOUR SQUARE (opposite the fountain and the Mairie).Take the road towards the cemetery direction SAINT-FLOUR then left towards LIEURIAC. 1 - After 300 m on the right take the good path climbing to LIEURIAC. 2 - In the village you reach the bread oven, the “courderc” (common village place) and bend in the road. 3 - Then higher up a good path on the left leads to an ancient Roman road. 4 - Follow the road on the right for 1 km (views of the Plomb du Cantal, the Puy Rocher and Prat de Bouc) and on the left a path, bypasses the Puy Renel ( views of the Planeze of Saint Flour and the Margaride) and ends up in FRAISSINET. 5 - In the village cross the road and keep right. The path leads to LES MAISONS and the D48. 6 - Cross the road and take the path opposite, after a ford it arrives at RECOULES. 7 - Follow in the same direction for 100m, then a sandy path for 500m. 8 - Pass near LA RODDE. Go right, then left towards CHABANNE. 9 - Possibility to go there and back towards the hill at left, the viewpoint of Cheyla. View to the Margeride, the Aubrac plateau and the village of Oradour. Go down to CHABANNE then right. Pass the cowshed. After the village a path on the left leads to the D56. 10 - Continue left until ORADOUR and the departure point. See also the abreuvoir at right and the gothic church with its square tower. Mountainbike: Easy level. Time: 1hr and 40 minutes. Attention: Between 1 and 2 wet path. Between 5 and 6 electric fence possible.

In the 13th century Lagarde was Commandery of Knights templar. The little chapel in this village is the last remnant of this once important property. The castle of LA BORIE is a good example of military architecture of 15th century. It is private property and can not be visited. Panoramic view to the Tailladès valleys and the Truyère river.

The meandering Truyère River snakes around the steep peak where the ruins of the XIIIth century feudal castle stand. You can walk the Way of the Cross from the small Saint-Illide’s Church up to the village of La Barge. Illumination of the site: every day in July, August and during the Easter and Christmas holidays and at weekends only outside these periods.

Covered washhouse fed by the Lestende spring (62°), comprising 2 successive trays allowing a progressive cooling of the water. For a long time women went to wash their laundry in this part of the Remontalou where gaseous sources and clearances “warmed up” the water from the river. At the end of the nineteenth century, a first washing house was built but it was necessary to wait 1929 for the Amicale Parisienne des Enfants du Canton de Chaudes-Aigues to finance a covered washhouse fed by the Lestende spring (62°), comprising 2 successive trays allowing a progressive cooling of the water. Renovated in 1999, hot water washhouse remains a curiosity reminding that water was used in wool treatment. “The inhabitants of Chaudes-Aigues (…) are industrious, they make the most of their waters, wash the wool before spinning it into mineral water… Without knowing its composition, the men guessed its alkaline nature and used it very fortunately.» Berthier, 1810
