Set off to discover the vineyards, with the theme of Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée (A.O.C.)! Saint-Émilion has two of them, but this walk will take you further afield, to the borders of the vineyard, to learn more about other neighbouring and lesser-known A.O.C.s.

This walk allows you to discover the landscapes of the area from the hills of Saint-Magne-de-Castillon.

You are in Castillon-la-Bataille where the Hundred Years War between the French and the English ended in 1453. In the land of history, this walk will lead you on the hillsides overlooking the city and the Dordogne.

This 46-kilometre loop is designed for walkers wishing to discover the vineyards and heritage of Saint-Emilion over 1 or 2 days. The 1st part, to the south near Sainte-Terre, is easy and offers fine views over the Dordogne. From St Pey-d'Armens, you can reach Saint-Emilion via Saint-Hippolyte and Saint-Laurent-des-Combes (30 km loop). The 2nd part, north towards Montagne, is more undulating (a long climb of 10% from Château de Pressac). It offers panoramic views of the vineyards and monuments to discover.

Come and explore with me the treasures of this historic town. In the Middle Ages, Castillon was an impressive fortified city with ramparts protecting a castle and a trading town. In 1453, the famous Battle of Castillon, which gave its name to the town, marked the end of the Hundred Years' War with the victory of the French over the English. Discover this city full of history, and don't forget to look around you, many clues are hidden.

By letters patent dated June 7, 1289, Edward I, King of England and of Aquitaine fixed the boundary between Saint- Emilion and Pomerol at the « Tailhayhat » stream, from which the château gets its name. Purchased in 1932 by Philippe Nebout, the estate has been run by a company created by the Nebout heirs since 1981. Luc is the current winemaker and belongs to the 3rd Nebout generation at Tailhas. The Château du Tailhas vineyard covers 11 hectares in a single unit located on the southern slopes of the Pomerol plateau, bordering on the commune of Saint-Emilion to the east. It is therefore contiguous to the grands crus of that appellation, in the Figeac region. The siliceous soil mixed with fine gravel lies over a subsoil rich in sandstone with iron deposits (« crasse de fer »). Planted with Merlot (80%), Cabernet- Franc (10%) and Cabernet- Sauvignon (10%).

In Pomerol, Château Beauregard is a flagship from the smallest appellation of the great wines of Bordeaux. A Gironde charterhouse in bloom awaits you in the north-east of the village near Libourne. Created in the 11th century by the Knights of Malta, the Château was reborn in the 1990s after being bought by private investors. Come and share this new impetus in a property with refined charm. Renovation of the vineyard and cellars, plantations, soil drainage: the rehabilitation of Château Beauregard is now bearing fruit. At maturity, the grapes are picked by hand and stored in small 30 kilo crates to respect the integrity of each berry. The moment of tasting is a sweet privilege in front of the lotus flowers and water lilies that dress the moat of Château Beauregard.

A Grand Cru Classé, Château de Pressac overlooks a south-facing knoll overlooking the Dordogne valley and the Saint-Emilion vineyards. The estate covers 42 hectares, including 36 hectares of vines. It was at Château de Pressac, following the French victory at Castillon-la-Bataille, that the surrender that put an end to the Hundred Years' War took place. At the entrance of the church (at ground level) there is a mosaic from the ancient period. The religious building has a single nave and a transept (which also supports the bell tower) The apse of the church is semi-circular in shape and is called "cul-de-four". On the outside, in the same apse, there are modillions, some of which have the particularity of representing fantastic animals. The arched portal of the church (Romanesque period) is made up of three semicircular arches. In the 16th century, a carved angel and a round arch were added to replace the tympanum of the Romanesque period.

The church of Saint-Magne is basically a Romanesque building. It is dedicated to Saint-Magne, an Italian religious who was bishop of Anagni and who died as a martyr in the 3rd century. Many monks, who settled in the parish in the Middle Ages, made the cultivation of vines and the production of wine flourish (activities that are still widespread today in the commune and the region). One section of the nave of the church, which is still in Romanesque style, has a pointed barrel vault. In the 18th century, a reconstruction phase was launched. Side aisles were added to part of the nave.
