Hiking around this lake is the Grande Randonnée de Pays of 82km, do able over 2 – 4 days on foot and it will enable you to discover all the attractions of this magnificent huge lake: the giant potholes in Pont de Poitte, the bridge of la Pyle, the dam wall, the beaches of Surchauffant, Bellecin and la Mercantine, etc. It is also possible to do this circuit by mountain bike.

Circuit of initiation which borrows mainly small roads and very rolling ways.

Long course which borrows forest trails, stones and little road. The most difficulties are located after Plaisia, before St Christophe and in the mountain of Ecrille. This circuit has the advantage of passing near several villages.

From Maisod, whose castle once welcomed the poet Lamartine, this easy hike offers a walk along the lake of Vouglans and an immersion into the aromas of pine and boxwood. From MAISOD, the trail follows (yellow waymarking) rue Pont-de-la-Pyle to the Chapel before descending to To the well. Ascend the rue du Château to your left (low wall with half-moon stones) and follow a farm path (on the left, a reservoir in cut stone used today for fire control). The trail heads into a forest planted with pine trees and comes to a rocky boundary. Quickly descend to Sur la Fratte, cutting through the boxwood. The BELVEDERE OF SUR LA FRATTE can be reached within 10 minutes there and back to your right (yellow and red waymarking and then yellow waymarking). Head to a forest platform and follow a wide path to your left that descends to the viewpoint over the lake. On returning to Sur la Fratte, the well-shaded trail heads south (yellow and red waymarking) (boxwood, oak trees, fir trees, white birch trees). After the water treatment plant, the trail crosses a wide path and descends to the edge of the beach (picnic tables). Follow this “coastal” trail to the left, and then take the road above the port. Head past a holiday village and take the road to reach La Pierre Fendue. Head up the steep path to your left (yellow waymarking) towards a campsite. Head past a forest clearing and exit onto the route du Mont du Cerf at the Trélachaume campsite. Follow this road to the left for 50 meters, and then go right twice towards Maisod. Take the trail through the forest to your left, on the right of a football pitch. At the first houses in Maisod, take rue des Cyclamens to the left, then head down rue du Château until you come to the foot of the Chapel. Head back to the MAISOD town hall parking lot the same way you came.

Tagging n ° 90 "Le Langard" is a varied circuit between woods and meadows. Well for a first discovery or with young mountain bikers, it allows you to discover the Belvédère de la Scie (view of Lake Clairvaux). To note ; the return is on the road.

Discover 3 lakes: those of Clairvaux and that of Vouglans. This circuit presents no particular difficulty and the climbs are made on good rolling roads. Discover a superb viewpoint over the small peninsula of la Frasnée and the small village of Hautecour during your hike on this mountain ridge.

This hike, mainly through forests, offers several beautiful escapes and especially access to the Fyète well, a geological curiosity that is typical to karstic environments. From the Fountain square, the trail takes the road northbound (yellow waymarking), until it exits the hamlet at Côte de Guy. The road gradually heads up to the right, through a forest, until its reaches the ridge. Branch off to the right and follow a path until you come to a first opening to the east (viewpoint onto the Roche d’Antre) Continue for around 500m to access FYETE WELL. The well can be reached within 5 mins there and back. Descend to the left and access to edge of the well. Back at “chemin de crête”, head south (viewpoint to the west over the villages of Coulouvre and, further along, Charchilla). In the background, locate the furrow in the Ain valley occupied by the Lake of Vouglans). Head past the viewpoint and descend to la Baume. Turn right to descend on a rocky trail that, after two zigzags, comes to the hamlet of Coulouvre. Take the D 296 to the right for a few meters to reach your starting point.

At the foot of long wooded cliffs, where herds of chamois like to hide, the two romantic lakes of Étival can be found, remnants of the glaciers that used to cover and plane the Jura during the Quaternary. From ETIVAL – THE LAKES, follow the road (yellow waymarking) that cuts between the two Lakes to reach The top of the Lakes. Continue to the right, heading past and along the Great Lake (peat bogs south of the lake) to join up with a forest path at the A Tout Fromant crossroads. To the left, the forest path will lead you to the Chemin du Calvaire (waterfalls). Then climb up the path to your left, that leads to the ridge at La Sea.  The path continues along the wooded ridge to the left, from which you can make out the discrete lake of la Fauge to the right in its combe. Head to L’Espinois, on the edge of the forest road. Head back up the ridge to the left and follow the gravel trail. Using this trail, join up with the road (a steep descent on a narrow trail through the trees) and reach the BELVEDERE OF THE ETIVAL LAKES. Follow the forest path to the north, leading to Sur les Lacs. Continuing in the same direction, gradually head down through the forest (the path is muddy in some areas) to reach the D 308 in Champs Gadout. Take the road to the left for 200 m, then branch off to the left and follow along the forest edge (wet path) before following along the bank of the small Etival lake and returning to your starting point.

From Moirans-en-Montagne, the circuit - which is quite technical in the forest sections at the beginning and the end of the trail and which is hilly along the old Roman road - heads through the Sapey plateau, also nicknamed “The Desert” due to the dryness of its soil. From the MOIRANS-EN-MONTAGNE signpost, (), follow “route de Saint-Laurent” to the left in front of the high school (red MTB waymarking no. 108). Head past the cemetery and turn left in the industrial area. Head past the water treatment plant and continue right on the path that heads under the D 470 towards Sous le Pont. Reach En Var to your right via the white path and then take the muddy trail bordered by trees to your left to reach Champ Piernet. Follow the grassy trail to your left that soon becomes stony and heads through the Bois de la Réfrèche with its two viewpoints over the Vouglans lake, before exiting at Les Araignées. Follow the road that runs alongside the départementale road and ascend the bank to the Regardoir parking lot. Soak up the view over the lake, head along the left of the parking lot and find the LE REGARDOIR crossroads; a trail burrows into the forest to your left.Follow the path that is stony in places and that brushes along the départementale road, then take an abandoned road to reach an inn. Take the D 301 to your left for 40 m and turn right onto the white path parallel to the road. This straight path heads down below the church towards the Voie Romaine crossroads (a rather complicated crossroads, pay attention to the waymarking).Head straight across the crossroads to follow the old roman road (red MTB waymarking no. 107) without really changing direction, crossing a road and coming to Sapey pasture (which fell victim to a fire in 2018 which deeply affected its landscape).Turn right onto a white path through dry grasslands (cattle grids), head past En Sapoy and reach La Croix de Sac. Take the underground road to your right that crosses under the D 470. Follow the road into the village to reach the MEUSSIA crossroads. Take the first road on your right to the D 27 and follow the D 27 to La Guille. Cross the road and take the shaded white path opposite you that gradually ascends into the forest. After a short descend into the pastures, reach the village of Coulouvre through Côte de Guy.  Head through the village, past COULOUVRE and En Chaspereille, and continue on the D 296 to a hamlet. Descend to your left on exiting the hamlet, using a path to the centre of the village of CRENANS (fountain). Taking the road to your left (Red MTB waymarking no. 108), head to Sous la Crochère.Take the stony and earthy path to your right into the forest. Head past a sand pit and join up with a small road. Quickly turn left (discovery trail: The soaring lake) and follow a path that is very stony in places along a wetland, called l’Etang. Exit at La Bessoule onto a cement road. Head up this steep road towards the left. Take the path to your left, just before a farm, through a clearing for 100 m (two agricultural gates to open and close) to head back down to La Montée de la Bessoule in Moirans-en-Montagne.Cross the road and continue towards the Pierre Vernotte high school to the parking lot you started in.

This "model factory" made available workshops to workers in which they benifited from energy needs to their production in celluloÏd. The building trade had, at this time, innovator architecture and conception. The Great Steam, classified as Ancient Memorial since 1987 and certified heritage from the 20th century, was built in 1905 on the Auguste Chanard architect's plans. This is a model factory with innovatory architecture for the work of celluloid, plastic particularly inflammable. The building trade, a V open-shaped, is composed of two wings divided in two floors of partitioned studios which were rented to craftsmen. Each studio worked on electricity(thanks to hydroelectric energy) and had got fire-fighting system from outside : The Sprinklage system. Work surface was ringed by irrigation channel in which the craftsman threw out caught fire objects. The Great Steam was for his sleeping partner - The Electric Union (private society) a display which should serve the conquest of electric energy's distribution's market in several departments. It was exploited until 1967.

The telecombi is a teleport with seats and cabins. The Télécombi du Mont Rond, coming from the Col de la Faucille, allows you to access the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; it lifts you from 1323m to 1543m altitude. Once there, the hiker is only 30mn walk away to reach the Grand Mont Rond (1596m), and 2h for the Colomby de Gex (1689m). 2 blue pistes for all mountain biking are marked from the top of the télécombi. In winter, it allows snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits with ease and to enjoy the ridges. Please respect the regulations set up by the Natural Reserve of the Jura Range.

The center offers courses and activities according to the season: discovery class, snow class, multi-activities. The residence offers free rental of all or part of the premises, which include a professional kitchen, 2 catering rooms, an 80 m2 multi-purpose room, and four adaptable classrooms/activity rooms for educational stays in line with the teacher's/educator's/coach's pedagogical project. Thin soil, good sun exposure, low water-retention capacities and the almost complete absence of soil additives. Yet, dry grasslands are full of biodiversity: Mountain germander, Breckland thyme, laserwort and the military orchid are just some of the flower species that you may glimpse if you take the time to look. But please only use your eyes; over a quarter of protected species in France are from this environment. Drylands are disappearing due to the expansion of bushlands, caused by the abandonment of these lands that are more difficult to farm.

After Franche-Comté’s defeat, and its inclusion in the Kingdom of France, the local lord and main advocate for Spanish dominance in Franche-Comté, Jacques-Antoine de Maisod, decided to rebuild the Maisod chapel in 1693. This “late Romanesque” chapel may have succeeded the first chapel, dated 1184, and part of this previous chapel’s materials may also have been used to rebuild the current chapel (P. Lacroix, 1981). It bears a coat of arms resembling an alliance of the Guigue de Champvans family and the inscription “Concuccus Resurgo” (Beat down, I get back up).

Made by man in the 1960s to feed a power plant, the ribbon of turquoise water from the Vouglans lake, winds 35 kilometres through the Ain valley from Pont-de-Poitte to the hamlet of Vouglans, in Lect. Its semi-circular dam which is 103 metres tall holds back 600 million cubic metres of water. Every year, it provides electricity to 130,000 inhabitants and, as such, is the second largest hydro-electric plant in France.

The diversity of the shrub species that make up hedges, their height and their varying density attract a diverse range of insect, bird and reptile species, and even some mammals who favour this dense and protective environments. In the summer, you may be lucky enough to see a red-backed shrike perched on a high branch searching for prey, a mimetic praying mantis camouflaged by the leaves, or a green whip snake coiled up under bush formations. Hedges provide a variety of micro-habitats, which allow many species to travel and are therefore real biological reservoirs and corridors that should be preserved. 

Here, on either side of the Roman road, there are still several characteristic stones. They appear to have served as foundations for crosses or stone gallows. Used by pilgrims and traders headed to Saint-Claude during the Middles Ages up until 1845, this road was also used by famous figures such as Philip the Bold, Charles the Bold, Louis XI, Anne of Birttany, Francis de Sales, Jeanne de Cantal and Lamartine. Saint-Claude’s body was found intact in 1181, several centuries after his death, and ostentation processions took this path towards Lons-le-Saunier and Arbois.  The history of the road and of the Pont de Pyle bridge are discussed in the book “Histoire de Maisod et des territoires voisins” (The History of Maisod and neighbouring regions) written by J.M VUILLEMOT.

With a love of lakes and humid environments, it isn’t rare to see this bird of prey’s dark silhouette over the water. A migratory bird, it travels to France in March and returns to Africa for the winter in mid-August or September. Very much a scavenger, it often snatches up dead fish from the surface of the water. It also flies over meadows during hay-cutting periods in search of prey made vulnerable by the short grass.

Used for swimming, this area offers many services and leisure activities: a beach with a guard, picnic tables, a leisure port, the rental of pedal boats, electric boats, canoes, etc.

Called a “crow-stepped gable” or a “corbie gable”, stepped gables were used to prevent a fire spreading from one attached house to another. Positioning slates flat prevented the infiltration of water (with water being sent away from the facade). In the countryside, this roof specificity is also typical in Bugey and Vercors (PNRHJ - Collection patrimoine, “Heritage collection).

We don’t know much about this straight “Roman” path. From Villard D’Héria, a village to the south of Moirans-en-Montagne, where the remains of a temple and of a cult and thermal complex can be found in one of the most remarkable Gallo-Roman sites of southern Franche-Comté, since the 2nd century, the main axis of this path runs from the Le Gouillat hamlet in the municipality of Charchilla, to the Sous la Razée hamlet in the municipality of Maisod. From there, a path branches off towards a set of inhabited areas, around and on Mont River, another Gallo-Roman site near Champagnole. A second path crosses over the Ain and joins up with the other North-South roads towards Salins, Besançon or Lons-le-Saunier. This ford was replaced by a bridge during the 13th century, which was often destroyed but always rebuilt up until the Pont de la Pyle which currently bridges the gap over the Vouglans lake.

Its reputation as the most common nocturnal bird of prey in France does not make the tawny owl any easier to spot and it is often seen at a quick glance flying over the road, lit-up by a car’s headlights. However, its hoot has been heard by all, starting with an easily-recognised short hoot, followed by silence and then a longer hoot, which is often found in nocturnal cinematic scenes. Its deep black eyes set it apart from nearly all other nocturnal birds of prey.

Résidence Les Berlicants offers modern, comfortable, fully-equipped apartments for two to eleven people. In the center of the village of Mijoux, in the immediate vicinity, you'll find hiking trails through forests and alpine pastures, downhill and cross-country ski slopes in winter, and thrilling activities on the Faucille site such as the giant zip line, tobogganing on rails and much more. In the center of Mijoux, an authentic Jura village on the border of the Ain and Jura departments, the Lélex and Les Rousses resorts are within easy reach, offering a wide range of activities!

Le Camping Gorges de l’Oignin is a well laid out 3 star, family friendly campsite on the banks of the 50 hectare Lake Oignin where campers can enjoy the site’s swimming pools and a wide range of other outdoor activities. Le Camping Gorges de l’Oignin welcomes you to the heart of the Jura Mountains in Bugey, an area of outstanding natural beauty with waterfalls and majestic scenery. The campsite is set on 3 hectares beside Lake Oignin and comprises 128 encampments ranging in size from 80m² to 120m². There are also chalets and mobile homes available for hire which can accommodate between 2 and 6 people and range in size from 30m² to 35m². Le Camping Gorges de l’Oignin has 2 swimming pools and there is a children’s play area with supervised activities during the high season, in addition there volleyball courts and areas for playing boules and football. Other services include a small grocery shop with fresh bread available daily and a snack-bar for ice-cream and drinks (open July & august only). At the campsite office it is possible to buy fishing permits or hire pedalos.

A large-capacity gîte where families, friends, colleagues or associations can get together for a weekend or a week in a warm, quiet and pleasant setting. Our guests have access to 18 large rooms, including 6 with balconies, all of which overlook the mountains and forests of the Jura massif. The Gîte offers a range of different formulas, from self-catering rentals with private use of the gîte, to rooms offered on an overnight basis with breakfast and table d'hôte in the evening. The vast reception room on the first floor is the perfect place to gather for meals, play billiards or table soccer, or enjoy a drink at the bar or in the lounge in front of the fireplace. The fully-equipped professional kitchen offers a wealth of possibilities for preparing unforgettable dining experiences, which continue on the large terrace with its Barnum set up from spring to autumn, where BBQs and aperitifs are a regular feature during the summer months. Our sauna is much appreciated by our sporty guests who want to enjoy a moment of comfort after physical exertion, or who simply want to relax.

The center offers courses and activities according to the season: discovery class, snow class, multi-activities. The residence offers free rental of all or part of the premises, which include a professional kitchen, 2 catering rooms, an 80 m2 multi-purpose room, and four adaptable classrooms/activity rooms for educational stays in line with the teacher's/educator's/coach's pedagogical project. The vacation center combines four buildings, linked by corridors that allow you to move around without leaving the building. The accommodation comprises 90 places divided into 29 rooms (2 to 6 places) with shared sanitary facilities, including 2 PMR-accessible rooms with private sanitary facilities. The rooms are close to sanitary facilities equipped with washbasins and individual showers. The ESF can accompany you on mid-mountain hikes, ski tours, bike rides and snowshoe treks. The residence also caters for individuals, with overnight stays for hikers in the Dombes building.
