The ruins of this castle, on top of a rocky peak, overlooking the lake of Coiselet and the Ain valley are accessible by following a 9km long footpath which starts in the « hameau de Boutavant » (in the commune of Vescles).

The blue lakes, bordered and punctuated by many viewpoints, reflect the discreet charm of the villages perched over the Ain and the Bienne rivers. From MONTCUSEL (Black MTB waymarking no. 56), head down the main road towards MARTIGNA and up the D 295 for 800 metres.Leave the D 295 and follow a small road to your left for 100 m before turning right onto an earthy path through the forest until you reach La Meille.Follow the stony path to your right downhill, staying in the forest, and you will reach “Chemin de Cruzille”. Continue straight on the downhill path to reach a good path, follow this path to the right until you come to Côte de Venière. (Possibility of taking the 2 km tour of the Chanon lake to your right.)From Côte de Venière, head up the D 295 to your left through a landscape that opens onto the Chanon Lake towards the village of MARTIGNA. On arriving at the hamlet of Le Chalet, at the foot of the village, take the path to your left overlooking the road and head to Chemin des Buis.  Take the stony path to your left towards Aux Enfingues. (Possibility of taking a round trip to the THREE STRAIRS BELVEDERE (BELVÉDÈRE DES 3 ESCALIERS) 400 metres away: viewpoint over Chanon lake and the outstretched Jura mountains).Continue on the stony and earthy forest path towards the BELVEDERE OF BIEF DESSOUS (BELVÉDÈRE DU BIEF DESSOUS), which ascends slightly for 1.5 km, before heading back down to the D 299. Follow the road to your right until you reach the BELVEDERE OF BIEF DESSOUS.Follow the forest path to your left towards Sur Faucon, and then turn left again to reach Les Cornes de Dolan. Head down the stony trail to your left that will lead you to Grange des Plans, and continue right on the winding and steep path to Bois sous Faucon. (Possibility of taking a 1-km round trip to the Les Plans beach on the edge of the Vouglans lake.)Continue on the path to your left until you reach the EAST VOUGLANS DAM (BARRAGE DE VOUGLANS EST) and then take the road to the village of VOUGLANS. Head down “rue de Framboise” and then follow the D 299 for 50 m. Turn left onto “rue le Bourdia” to reach Le Bourdia. Continue your journey towards CHANCIA through La Planche on a long stony path bordered by fields before a stretch in the shade along the Ain river until you reach Sur l’Antenne and later Sur Valière, before arriving at Sur la Cize, at the entrance to Chancia.Take “Chemin de Nezan” to your left, which ascends sharply with two large bends and heads past Vers la Serra, A la Serra, and will take you to BELEVEDERE AU CHANAIS. The stony path heads up to the Source Saumur before heading through pastures to the hamlet of NEZAN. Take the tarmac road up towards MONTCUSEL. Continue past the summit and take the narrow (single) stony path to your left 50 meters further on to head back down to your point of departure. 

From the sunny hillside of the Bienne valley to the shaded and wooded hillside of the Ain valley, a long walk linking the industrious hamlets around Montcusel and Martinga. From the town hall (yellow waymarking), the trail descends to the village centre in MONTCUSEL, before ascending to the left via “rue de la niella” to reach la Neyelle. Follow the shaded path to the right and exit onto the hand-gliding take-off area. Continue on the main road that descends southwards. Branch off to the east, then head north, go past the Cul de la Pra and then ascend to the hamlet of GRAND SERVE. Follow a road to the right until you reach la Queille after two bends. Descend on a good path along the side of the hill looking over Douvre. Arrive at les Vignes (wide bend). Continue to your left to the bottom of a pasture. A gravel path, with two bends, opens onto a meadow (boxwood, junipers, pine trees, white birches). Head along the pasture and continue north on a sunken path. Reach Chanon. Continue on the road to your right until you come to CHANON LAKE, and then la Côte de Venière. The stone path to your left borders the meadows before reaching Chemin de Cruzille, under the forest canopy. Head under a power line (viewpoint over the Ain valley at the foot of the Vouglans dam). Take an earthy path in a southwestern direction heading along the Owl’s mound. The stony path passes through la Meille and descends to NEZAN.   Follow the road to the left and, at a drinking trough, ascend to the right on a trail followed by a road. Around 50 m after a pass (725 m, viewpoint), return to MONTCUSEL to the right.

This beautiful walk starts out in the town of Oyonnax and follows the River Sarsouille through the Bretouze Forest and takes about 1.5 hours to complete. This path leads across suspended footbridges and across fords in streams. It is suitable for children however care should be taken as the path can become slippery after rain so it is important to wear good walking shoes and do not forget to bring some water. This "model factory" made available workshops to workers in which they benifited from energy needs to their production in celluloÏd. The building trade had, at this time, innovator architecture and conception. The Great Steam, classified as Ancient Memorial since 1987 and certified heritage from the 20th century, was built in 1905 on the Auguste Chanard architect's plans. This is a model factory with innovatory architecture for the work of celluloid, plastic particularly inflammable. The building trade, a V open-shaped, is composed of two wings divided in two floors of partitioned studios which were rented to craftsmen. Each studio worked on electricity(thanks to hydroelectric energy) and had got fire-fighting system from outside : The Sprinklage system. Work surface was ringed by irrigation channel in which the craftsman threw out caught fire objects. The Great Steam was for his sleeping partner - The Electric Union (private society) a display which should serve the conquest of electric energy's distribution's market in several departments. It was exploited until 1967.

Lake Coiselet, the most southern in the jura is at the confluence of the Bienne and the Ain Rivers. It was created in 1970, during the building of the Coiselet dam, just after Lake Vouglans. It s dominated by Mont Molard de Nétru and the Chancia cliff

At the foot of Molard de Netru, where the Bienne meets the Ain, is the Coiselet Lake. This lake is a 10-kilometre-long artificial lake created in 1970 when a hydropower dam was built. This lake is marked on its western edge by the Pic d’Oliferne, with an altitude of 807 m and on which a castle was built in the 13th century, now mostly in ruins.

The presence of boxwood, which is easily recognisable from its small, stiff and oval leaves, is proof of an environment’s dryness. Its seed is capable of sprouting from a tiny crack, where there is almost no soil. Boxwood favours heat and humidity, like many other plants, but it can also withstand period of drought. For this purpose, it has a secret weapon: its leaves are covered with a thick and shiny skin and look as though they have been varnished. This feature limits perspiration and therefore water loss. In fact, it’s almost as though this species holds its breath during dry periods.

Take time to appreciate the view: the Lac de Coiselet, created by a dam built in 1970, collects the water from the Bienne and the Ain and winds along the bottom of a distinct relief. With a bit of patience, you may see some of the birds of prey that nest in the nearby cliffs.  

Coiselet lake is an artificial lake created in 1970, when the dam of the same name was first commissioned. It is located on the edge of the Ain and Jura departments. It is the Jura’s southern-most lake, fed by the Bienne and Ain rivers.

The short-toed snake eagle feeds mainly on reptiles (snakes, large lizards, etc.). It can therefore sometimes be seen gliding over dry and rocky grasslands in search of food. In the winter, when reptiles are rarely found, it leaves the Jura and heads to Africa.

This is the largest nocturnal bird of prey in the world! It is almost 70 centimetres tall (as tall as a table). This formidable night hunter feeds on various type of prey including voles, fox cubs, hedgehogs and even peregrine falcons.

Cliffs, screes and rocks are rocky, rupestrine environments. Their long exposure to shade or sun, and the lack of soil mean that the plant species living there must constantly adapt. Storing water in thick leaves, hairiness, leaf folds to avoid perspiration and dwarfism are all features that plants have developed to survive in this mineral environment. Some birds have become specialists in nesting in cliffsides, such as the peregrine falcon, the alpine swift and its 60-cm wingspan or the Eurasian crag martin. Uninterested in these open environments, the rare short-toed snake eagle, which eats snakes, the Eurasian eagle-owl or the red kite prefer to nest in the large trees below.

Upstream from the waterfall, during its underground travels, the water from this rivulet has dissolved and carried along part of the limestone through which it runs. In open air, the limestone carried along by the water settles and calcifies the moss and other debris forming this curious rock with the treacherous appearance of a sponge or of volcanic rock.

In Dortan, only the castle, the church and a few houses were spared from a fire set by the German troops on 21 July 1944 after ten days of deadly occupation (35 dead in total). Most inhabitants sought refuge in the surrounding forests. Many local stories tell of the suffering that the entire village witnessed.
