The classified site of Plateau des 7 lacs is a unique and amazing site. On the circuit, you will discover the lakes of Narlay, Ilay, Petit Maclu, Grand Maclu, Bonlieu and the belvedere of Saut Girard. Do not hesitate to take a break at the botanical and aromatic garden of La Fromagerie, and to bring back a little souvenir from "La boissellerie du Herisson".

An unmissable natural site within the Jura, the Hérisson waterfalls live up to their reputation. A trail adapted with walkways, stairs and belvederes allows hikers to admire the river's amazing lines from one waterfall to another. From the upper parking lot, carefully cross the D39 towards the point of departure for this hike, starting with a gravel road. From here, the itinerary is well signposted. You only need to follow the signs for the Hérisson Waterfalls trail - To the bottom - House of Waterfalls on your way there and To the top - Upper parking lot to return. During this wooded and riparian walk, the rocky barrier that marks the transition from the lake region to the Grandvaux plateau gives way to the Pic de l'Aigle (Eagle Peak) and the Belvedere of the Four Lakes. From the PEAK PARKING LOT, the rocky trail ascends (yellow waymarking) to the north until it reaches the Foot of the peak across a healthy dry lawn. After climbing a steep slope (white and red waymarking) for 200 m, you will reach the PIC DE L’AIGLE. The walk continues to the northeast winding along the wooded ridge. It nears a forest road twice and leads to the Belvedere of the Three Lakes, Ilay, Great Maclu and Little Maclu. Staying on the edge of the ridge, a stony trail will lead you to the BELVEDERE OF THE FOUR LAKES (interpretive sign) surrounded by fir trees. The trail ascends to the right towards the Belvedere Parking Lot, below the Ban forest road. The path to the left - an extension of another trail - follows along the ridge marked by a set of cliffs without ever approaching it. After a quick winding descent, which can be slippery during humid weather, the trail meets the edge of the D 75 at the Côte du Maclu. Using the cycling lane to the left of the roadside (yellow waymarking), head to the LITTLE MACLU LAKE (parking lot). The path then follows along the Little Maclu and Grand Maclu lakes towards Ilay. From the Chemin des Lacs, the road to the left opens onto les Rousselets and its chapel, nestled between two trees. Follow the road to the left (white and red waymarking) and take a trail that crosses the D39 twice. The well-delineated path (former tramline) gradually ascends towards "Chemin du Château". The trail then becomes steep until it reaches the Foot of the peak. From here, you can head back to your starting point (yellow waymarking).

Easy circuit, without great difficulty, ideal with children or to start. The loop revolves around 4 lakes of glacial origin, the deepest of which is Narlay. Also called Scotland by its resemblance to the Loch Mare region.

Petit Maclu and Grand Maclu, Ilay and Narlay: these are four emblematic lakes of the riparian Jura landscape often called “Little Scotland”. Families with young children should choose the trip around the three lakes, which is shorter and only includes one road crossing. From the parking lot, carefully cross the D 75 (yellow waymarking) and head to the Monts des Ifs intersection. Follow the path to the left below the road and reach the top of the LAC DU PETIT MACLU (Petit Maclu Lake). Take the good stony path along the lakes, heading past the Petit Maclu and the Grand Maclu, and after a small forest section, arrive at the edge of the Lac d’Ilay before joining up with the Chemin des lacs.  Continue on the path to your right (white and red waymarking) until you reach Lac d’Ilay. (If you would like to shorten this circuit and only take the trip around the three lakes, branch off to the right and take the Chemin des Bornes, followed by the Mont des Ifs.)From the Lac d’Ilay intersection, carefully cross the D 75 and follow a tree-lined path towards the hamlet of LA FROMAGERIE.Turn right (yellow waymarking) onto a long wooded path bordered by hedges, which heads to Le Raffour and then right to the village LE FRASNOIS.Turn left. Chemin de la Vierge heads along the back of the village and meets up with the D 75 to the right. Take the road to your left, head past the church and the town hall and take the road towards Lac de Narlay.At the Vers Narlay intersection, continue on the road to your left, and head towards the houses at the bottom of the hamlet. Follow the stony path that heads up and along the left of the lake. The path will take you up to the Monts des Ifs parking lot.

An enchanting location! Three natural lakes with turquoise and emerald waters, surrounded by greenery and exceptional wetlands offering an accessible family walk. Take the good stony path along the lakes, heading past the Petit Maclu and the Grand Maclu, and after a small forest section, arrive at the edge of the Lac d’Ilay before joining up with the Chemin des lacs.  Continue on the path to your right (white and red waymarking) until you reach Lac d’Ilay.Continue on, following along the right of the D 75 (yellow waymarking), head past a pasture (with barriers to contain the livestock) and locate a grassy path just below the road towards the entrance of the village of Fresnois, at the junction with Chemin des Bornes.Take the good path to the right, bordered by meadows, for around 350 metres. At the fork, head left and join up with the D 75. Take a path to the right that heads away from the road towards Mont des Ifs.Carefully cross the road again to return to the Monts des Ifs parking lot.

This trail will take you to discover Lake Chambly and Val. A preserved environment that makes it a place to relax, even if swimming is prohibited. Then you will go back on the plateau or succeed the meadows.

Despite the rise to Fontenu, no real difficulty on this circuit which offer you pretty view on the lake and on villages like Fontenu and Marigny.

The telecombi is a teleport with seats and cabins. The Télécombi du Mont Rond, coming from the Col de la Faucille, allows you to access the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; it lifts you from 1323m to 1543m altitude. Once there, the hiker is only 30mn walk away to reach the Grand Mont Rond (1596m), and 2h for the Colomby de Gex (1689m). 2 blue pistes for all mountain biking are marked from the top of the télécombi. In winter, it allows snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits with ease and to enjoy the ridges. Please respect the regulations set up by the Natural Reserve of the Jura Range.

The Monts Jura offers the ideal altitude for hiking between 900 and 1723 m. There are marked and maintained trails waiting for you. Since Lélex, the gondola lift La Catheline brings you to the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; climbing from 900m to 1450m altitude. When you get there, you are only an hour and a half walk away from the Crêt de la Neige (172 3m), the highest point in the Jura. At Lélex and Crozet, both gondolas are equipped for MTB riding in summer. Both the Catheline and the Fierney allow mountain bikers to go back up easily and quickly in order to better enjoy the descent on both sides of the mountain! Please note: electric mountain bikes are not allowed in the Catheline gondola. It enables snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits easily and enjoy the crests in winter. Monts Jura offers an ideal altitude for hiking. The Fierney gondola allows you to gain easier access to the peaks of the Jura mountain range. Marked and maintained trails await you. From the top, the hiker is only a 2h30 walk to reach the Crêt de la Neige (1723 m), the highest point in the Jura. In summer, downhill MTB can be practised thanks to the 2 gondolas, Catheline and Fierney, enabling you to get back up easily and quickly to fully enjoy the descent on both sides of the mountain! This "model factory" made available workshops to workers in which they benifited from energy needs to their production in celluloÏd. The building trade had, at this time, innovator architecture and conception. The Great Steam, classified as Ancient Memorial since 1987 and certified heritage from the 20th century, was built in 1905 on the Auguste Chanard architect's plans. This is a model factory with innovatory architecture for the work of celluloid, plastic particularly inflammable. The building trade, a V open-shaped, is composed of two wings divided in two floors of partitioned studios which were rented to craftsmen. Each studio worked on electricity(thanks to hydroelectric energy) and had got fire-fighting system from outside : The Sprinklage system. Work surface was ringed by irrigation channel in which the craftsman threw out caught fire objects. The Great Steam was for his sleeping partner - The Electric Union (private society) a display which should serve the conquest of electric energy's distribution's market in several departments. It was exploited until 1967.

Near lakes, there are not only humid areas! Where limestone is predominant, water immediately filters through, making life difficult for plants. The soil is not very deep, and is dry and nutrient-poor... These are dry grasslands. Vegetation is neither very tall nor very dense. The species living in these grasslands adopt special strategies to survive in these difficult living conditions: greasy leaves, parasitism, strong odours, etc. For example, Breckland thyme avoids “sweating” by synthesising essential oils. Its smell is easily recognisable, and this variety of wild thyme is excellent when used to clear airways.

Centred between the banks of the lake of Ilay is an island: the island of La Motte. Archaeological excavations have revealed that is was home to three successive religious establishments. An initial church was erected around the year 1,000 and seems to have burned down. After being rebuilt, a vestibule was added to it by a monastic congregation that ended up abandoning the place. Of the third establishment, we know only that it was abandoned during the 15th century.  A wooden bridge provided access to the structure from the bank and the marshes that are now present were once orchards and pastures.

Among the various environments that make up humid areas, reed beds play an essential role: they stabilise the bank and create an area where the plants present filter the water. It is a safe place and a reproductive area for many species, including birds, such as the Eurasian coot. Throughout the year, their short and powerful cries can be heard here.

The Franche-Comté conservatory for natural areas manages the wetlands on the 4 lakes site in partnership with the owning municipalities and local farmers. This site is fill of species specific to open environments which must be preserved. Once used by farmers, these zones have gradually been abandoned. This is why managers have made maintaining this type of environment a priority by reinstating extensive grazing. Highland Cattle cows are able to move around on waterlogged soil and find the food that they need. The amount of cattle and grazing periods are adapted depending on the species and environments in question. The High-Jura is visible in-depth, with the lines of the successive ridges of its forest and the naked roundness of the Jura mountains. Beyond, the Mont Blanc is also visible near the Givrine pass. The Petit Maclu and the Ilay lake provide 10 municipalities with drinking water, including Frasnois. 67,000 cubic meters are used up every year. The lakes on the Frasnois plateau are natural. The icebergs that covered the Jura 20,000 years ago have “planed” the earth and created the necessary depressions for the lakes to form. The limestone and moraine deposits from the movement of icebergs are watertight and are able to retain the water. To best preserve the quality of the water, a prefectural order bans the use of thermal engines.

The path that leads up to the peak takes a short journey through sparse vegetation, called dry grasslands. This is where a vegetal diversity that is unique to calcareous slabs and rocks can be found. In addition to various orchids, the successive blooming of various small plants is as remarkable as the diversity of shrubs such as the alemanchier, common barberry or Mougeot's whitebeam. The Peak is a favoured observation post to see the common raven or the peregrine falcon. These two species nest on the nearby cliffs.

Whilst the Chamois is capable of travelling across a 1,000-meter incline in a quarter of an hour, most hikers are only able to climb 1,000 meters in 3 hours. Even an experienced athlete would need one hour to climb such an incline. If the Chamois is such a good climber it is because it has an enlarged heart that is capable of pumping blood through its body at an alarming rate, twice as fast as a human heart, and because it has hooves with two nails that can separate for better adherence to the rocks. A partition between its “fingers”, covered with fur, prevents it from delving too deep into the snow, in a similar way to our snowshoes. Meeting this species, like others, is very much a question of luck and a significant amount of patience! But once you glimpse one, do not move and it will allow you to watch it for a good while.

The waters of the Petit Maclu and the Grand Maclu feed the lake of Ilay. Each occupies a shallow basin dug out by the glaciers around 20,000 years ago. These lakes are mainly surrounded by a wide diversity of vegetation, called low-marshes, wet tall-herb and fern fringes or peat bogs. Some reed beds also develop there. Insects flourish here due to the high quality of the environment, in particular dragonflies who vary in colour. The Eurasian coot is the most faithful bird to these lakes. Not very discreet, it is recognisable by its trumpeting cries of warning.

The Jura massif provides a long geological history. The limestone rocks formed during the Mesozoic era, between -170 million years and -90 million years. Much later, the pushing of the Alpes led these rocks to fold, between -11 million years and -3 million years. Lastly, the erosion caused by the icebergs, the freezing, the water and the wind, have progressively shaped the landscape. And Man has made the final contribution through farming and development.

Every evening, Valérie proposes a menu based on local produce and specialities from elsewhere, with starter, main course, cheese and dessert, booked before 12 noon.

In the heart of the Haute chaîne du Jura, the La Loge refuge welcomes you to an exceptional site! A summer and winter guarded mountain hut at 1436 m altitude, situated on the GR9 and close to the Lélex-Crozet ski area, enjoy an overnight stay, a break or a tasty meal during your getaway to the Crêt de la Neige, hosted by Cathy & Franck. Not far from the Haute Chaîne du Jura Nature Reserve, please respect its regulations.
