Misson is a small village that stretches over 14.7 kilometres. It is situated at an altitude of 90 metres and has about 800 inhabitants. It is crossed by the stream of Leplace, the stream of Grand Arrigan and the stream of Yats. Misson is twinned with the town of Arnac in the Cantal. In 1641, Misson belonged to the royal provostry of Dax, which bought from Louis XII certain domain rights. Fifty years ago, Misson was home to renowned clog makers and gem makers. Today these trades have disappeared but they reappear in some craft exhibitions. Nowadays, the identity of the village reflects a long history.

Located in the Chalosse region of the Landes département, Habas is one of the 24 communes of the Communauté de Communes du Pays d?Orthe et Arrigans. This charming village, set on the heights of the Gave de Pau, has a population of around 1,500, and has maintained its vitality thanks to a rich network of associations and the preservation of its local shops. Habas takes its name from the Gascon word "fabas", meaning a place fertile with beans. Located on the Roman road linking Bordeaux to Astorga, the area became a stopping-off point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela in the 14th century. At the same time, the town began to develop around its feudal castle, the site of today?s town hall. In 1638, Louis XIII granted Habas letters patent authorizing the holding of a market every Friday.

The construction of the oldest part of the church of Saint John the Baptist dates back to the 11th century. The church would have been built in the 12th century on the model of the one in Montfort. The same entrance porch to the cemetery can be found there. In the 16th century, two side aisles were added to the church, which was then covered with a beautiful vault with binders and tiercerons. On the keystone of the nave, we read: "l'an MVCXXXVIII ceste chapeles fut faicte". The masterpiece of the furniture is the high altar of 1898 whose history is unusual. Representing Landes saints, it was made for the choir of the cathedral of Aire sur l'Adour. It was refused and then installed in a chapel in the same town, then in Poyanne around 1930 and finally installed in Poyartin around 1960. You can also go there simply to buy his products. As you leave, stop at the 12th century church, a listed Historic Monument. Its military architecture will surely be a surprise. In the village centre, near the market hall, take advantage of the trail to explore this 13th century fortified town. Don’t forget to go to the Chalosse Museum, where 19th century agricultural life and tenant farming will reveal all their secrets to you. Lastly, by bicycle or on foot, travel awhile on Chalosse’s Voie Verte greenway. What a day!

The church of Montfort-en-Chalosse carries traces of construction of several eras and styles. The date of its foundation could be dated back to the 12th century. It is listed in its entirety in the Supplementary Inventory of Historical Monuments. The original building was Romanesque. The nave and the bell tower, both with very thick walls nearly 2m ????, date from that time. The church was enlarged during the Gothic period. Many changes were also made in the 17th and 18th centuries. The simple organs date from the 17th century. Behind the high altar, you will discover the historized church marquee which deserves attention. The church is part of the discovery circuit of the Bastide of Montfort (point 5). A path of 656 yards in the woods will lead you to the fountain of a hundred steps. As you take the steps, check out the circuit map and you will arrive in the village.

In Baigts, Monique welcomes you to her family farm and its beautifully exposed farm on the hills of Chalosse. A passionate farmer, she will tell you about her duck breeding and force-feeding whose facilities are on site. In the south of the Landes, in the village of Baigts, the tradition of the landaise race goes back to the 19th century. At that time, the access to the village square was closed by carts and the brave youngsters would dodge the onslaught of the cows. In 1911, the town council decided to build boxes and a stand, adjacent to the town hall, located on the town square. During the patronal celebrations of August 15th until 2004, the track was closed by removable wooden barriers. For safety reasons, they had to be removed and replaced by metal fences, but the stands remain natural: the spectators sit on the slope surrounding the square from the church, in the shade of the fir and chestnut trees.

Following the tour of Montfort-en-chalosse, Bastide of the 13th century, you will discover in point 4 Chalosse differently with this fountain and its laundry. From the road, a path allows you to go down through a bamboo plantation and banana trees. In the 1800s, families and servants climbed down by a steep dirt road to get enough water to meet daily needs and wash clothes. It took them a whole hour! Have fun by counting the steps (150 exactly but shhhh it’s a secret!). On your left, there is a marked hiking trail (hiking guide n°4 is on sale at the Tourism Information Office at 2€) and on your right, sink into the woods, follow the path on 656 yards, it will lead you to the church of the 12th century (point 5 of the circuit).
