Camping Les 7 Laux: explore Theys, Isère delights

One of the longest hikes in the Belledonne massif, offering a chance to explore an exceptional site with numerous high-altitude lakes.

The ascent to the 7 Laux refuge is a hike which will take you through magnificent scenery. Getting to the lakes is well worth the effort and you will have to hike up the mountain to reach the plateau and the refuge.

This short hike from the funicular railway is full of surprises, from the remarkable panoramic views of the Belledonne massif to the colourful skies filled with paragliders and an excursion into the woods.

The Pas de Rocheplane is one of the few points of passage through the cliffs, providing access to the Hauts Plateaux de Chartreuse from St Hilaire du Touvet. Magnificent!

An easy, almost flat walk, ideal for families or beginners. Magnificent views over the valley, the Belledonne mountain range and the Oule waterfall (on the edge of Le Plateau des Petites Roches).

This route takes in all the charm of Le Plateau des Petites Roches along its entire length, with the added bonus of breathtaking views over Le Plateau, the Grésivaudan valley and the Belledonne massif!

This route, typical of Le Plateau des Petites Roches, will take you along the cliffs overlooking the Grésivaudan valley, where you can enjoy magnificent views of the neighbouring Belledonne massif.

Depart in the direction of Bec Margain to join the paths along the cliffs overlooking the Grésivaudan valley. After a diversion through the hamlet of Tournoud, you'll reach the Pas du Facteur and from there begin the descent to Craponoz.

An easy walk for all the family. You'll pass the hang-glider launch site (a wooden springboard that plunges down into the valley) and then enjoy a break at the viewpoint indicator, where you can admire the exceptional panorama over Belledonne and the Vercors.

The Les 7 Laux refuge sits on an island at an altitude of 2,135 m, surrounded by the Rocher Blanc and the Pic de la Belle Etoile, and the clear blue waters of 12 mountain lakes. Getting there : By Belledonne, two routes are possible among others to access the refuge: Fond de France or Le Pleynet. After Allevard les Bains, direction Fond de France or Le Pleynet. At Fond de France, the trail starts in the car park next to the gîte l’Essentiel. At Le Pleynet take the forest road at the end of the car park (the one up). At 2100 meters, the refuge of La Pra, close to the many clear lakes of the Massif Belledonne, will delight anglers, hikers and families. La Pra is also a wonderful pasture where you can encounter marmots, wild sheep and ibex. The refuge is a stopover on the GR 738 from Chamrousse. The surrounding peaks are often accessible in summer, either on footpaths or "off-track" for those who prefer less frequented areas (Vaudaine, Doménon, Croix de Belledonne sectors), as soon as the snow has disappeared. You are entering a Natura 2000 protected area where swimming in rivers and lakes is strictly prohibited. From the Pré Raymond parking lot, take the forest road, then a path to the left (south-east). A few hairpin bends bring you to an almost level path leading out of the forest. Cross the stream before reaching the dam and Lac du Crozet. Follow the path along the lake and up the Vallon de Mercier to the Col de la Pra. At the col, turn right (south) and descend to the refuge, 5 minutes from the col de la Pra. From Chamrousse, from the parking lot at the foot of the Grande Aiguille, follow the GR de Pays, then pass between the lakes (GR 738). Climb slightly before descending into the combe de l'Echaillon. Turn left onto the path leading to the Oursière waterfalls, then right onto the path leading to Lac David. Climb up to Lac Léama, then on to Lac Longet and Lac Claret. Climb up to the refuge. From the Recoin de Chamrousse, take the GR 738 to Lac Robert. Then follow the same route as the Croix de Chamrousse.

You can see the Porte Traine mill on the Tour des Petites Roches hike, close to the Dioux waterfall. It is one of the oldest buildings on the plateau.

La Maison Bergès [the Bergès family home] - Museum of Hydroelectric Power, standing at the foot of the Belledonne Massif, is an exceptional cultural heritage site which transports visitors back in time to the advent of hydroelectric power.

The Cirque de Saint-Même, in the heart of the Chartreuse Regional Park, is truly a place of outstanding natural beauty. Lying at an altitude of 900 m, the cirque always remains refreshingly cool thanks to four spectacular waterfalls that cascade through the middle of this impressive, 500-m high amphitheatre of Urgonian limestone. An underground spring, the source of the River Guiers Vif , ensures a constant flow of water to the falls (from top to bottom: Cascade des Sources, Grande Cascade, Cascade Isolée, Pisse du Guiers). A 1½-hr signposted walking circuit allows you to explore the three lower waterfalls. Another waymarked footpath connects the cirque to Saint-Pierre d'Entremont.

The Sabot pass was a passage to Savoy, used by peddlers The road up to the Sabot pass was made to facilitate the ascent to the mountain pastures, it extends the one from Vaujany, passes through La Villette and ends at the Sabot pass, with a breathtaking view of Mont Blanc. This old pass, which used to be a way to get to Savoie (in patois, Sabot, "Sabaudia" means Savoie), has now been abandoned by its big brother, the Croix de Fer.

In the 1970s, the first engineers arrived to survey the site and the possibilities. The worried inhabitants had many questions about what was to become of their village. The land offers the possibility of building the largest dam in France, which will be named Grand Maison after the big house that existed in this valley in the past. Behind the Sabot pass, the Grand Maison lake, named after the big house that existed in the valley at the time, is now covered by water. The work will take place from 1980 to 1985, and will involve connecting the future Grand Maison reservoir to the Verney lake, via the Rissiou massif. To do this, a tunnel boring machine will work to dig a gallery in the heart of the massif. A pipe will be installed in this gallery. The titanic undertaking will bring in the "work mercenaries", people of different nationalities living side by side. Vaujany was transformed into a city where workers were welcomed. The Vaujaniats will participate in the work for some, others will work to feed them thanks to a canteen that will provide meals for all these people. It was the time of the Far West, as the dust replaced the quietness of this small rural village. A train will be built during the time of the work to bring the rubble from the mountain to the place (below) called today the Collet. You can see the tennis courts which are situated on a flat area, all the embankment of the dam was stored there changing the original structure of the place. At one time this place was called près des près and was marshy.

The Guiers Mort gorges are made from the Dent de Crolles underground network and go from Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse to Saint-Laurent-du-Pont.
