Discover Valbo Camp at Valbonnais: Nature and Adventure

Nice walk in the mountain pastures, to discover the "Quatre mille du Beaumont": Colombier, Côte-Belle, Côte-Rouge and Mont-de-Rousse. A hike where marmots are often present. Parking: From La Mure, take the N85 (Route Napoléon) and after Les Essarts turn left on the D212 which will bring you to Saint-Michel-en-Beaumont. After the hamlet of Villelonge turn left onto the D212F. Park in a car park along the D212F, near the Col de Parquetout. Itinerary : Take the forest track "Tour du Valbonnais-Beaumont" to the Clos de l'Alpe hut. Continue on the contour line on the side of Mont-de-Rousse to the Plainet (1490m). The path turns due north and crosses the magnificent Bois des Trente. You join the Col de Parquetout road which you take to the right to find the car.

This hike, above the village of Entraigues, shows the way that man was organized to get the most out of the agriculture and forestry... From the parking at Entraigues church, follow the road to Valjouffrey until the last garden and take a left onto the marked trail at Vêt-Lac Gary. This follows the torrent descending from the combe Drayre then goes up at a big crossing rising onto a scree, and then winds down in the rocky ridges. The trail crosses a beech wood then continues by mounting swiftly getting close to the Combe des Roberts, then crossing it still gaining in altitude to the right bank.. At the fork at Jas des Agneaux/Cabane du Vêt-Lac Gary, the slope becomes less sleep. Take an elevated path to the left to join the Jas des Agneaux. 

This signposted itinerary is the only one that enables you to reach the magnificent Gary Lake in the Arcanier massif that resembles a citadel. From the Entraigues church car park, follow the road to Valjouffrey up to the last garden and turn left onto the footpath that is signposted Vet-lac- Gary. It continues along a stream that starts at the Combe de la Draye, then climbs up across a rock fall and meanders along rocky ledges. The footpath goes through a beech forest and continues swiftly upwards as it gets closer to the Combe des Roberts, which it crosses as it continues to gain in altitude on the right bank.  At the fork in the road Jas des Agneaux/Vet-Lac Gary hut, the slope is not so steep. Follow the route on the right hand side and, by the ledge footpath, enter the Vêt valley in order to get to the pastoral hut. The route follows the left bank of the stream. Link up to the small path coming from Drayes on the Blanc pass. It meanders on a slope of scree below the gap in the Arcanier.  From the Gary gap, go down as far as the lake that is set on a terrace facing the summit of the Valjouffrey valley. Return by the same route.

A refreshing walk along an old but still well-alive canal, winding in the forest. Altitude climb + : 100 m Outward walk : 1h à 2h30 Start : St Laurent en Beaumont ou La Salle en Beaumont Difficulty : easy Map : Top 25 IGN 3336OT La Mure - Valbonnais Trail map « La Matheysine » Three thematic and educational trails are available to the hikers from St Laurent or La Salle. The shortest trail starts from St Laurent, with the «Ambiance» walk following a loop. From La Salle, for the children, follow the «Ludique» walk; for the adults, follow the «Connaissance» walk. To do all these trails, the ideal start is St Laurent, following La Salle en Beaumont along the canal until the end of the «Connaissance» walk. Go down to La Salle en Beaumont and follow the «Connaissance» walk to go up the canal and return to St Laurent via the outward trail. When there is water in the canal, you should remain very careful especially with children and dogs since the current can be quite strong in some places, even though the canal is not very deep. Underground passages increase this risk.

A forest trail in the shade of tall pine trees up to a light-filled, unique belvedere.The car park - in a cul de sac - is 300 m after the Dessous la Roche car park. From there, under a large beech tree, follow the marked footpath along an uneven forest trail, then turn right onto a small path marking the real entrance to the forest and the heart of the Ecrins Park. From there, follow the path for a long distance across the Combe de La Géline as far as the Pissard des Aiguilles, and you finally arrive in lush sub-Alpine grassland. After three loops through the prairie, you reach the Jas des Agneaux, at point 1893m. Take the same route on the way back or the Vêt - Lac Gary route, arriving at the village of Entraigues, 4 km downstream from Dessous la Roche.

The magnificent belvedere on the agricultural plain and Périer village will be the reward for this hike. In the village of Périer, pass in front of the old  Alpinistes hotel and go  right into rue de la Scierie left of the wash house.. Over the sawmill cross Tourot bridge and go up a few bends onto a limestone slope.. Pass two ruins, the elevated path above the Tourot canyons, come out near to   Salce farm. At a fork situated at the summit of the prairies, take the itinerary to the left.. Near to the mountain pass, the old hayfields are now pastures for chamois goats and deer. On the ridge, take a path to the left penetrating the little fir tree wood to reach the Roche du Touret, a magnificent belvedere over the valley and the Grand Armet mountain range to the West. Return using the same itinerary. 

A challenging and fairly demanding hike that will take you from the Roizonne Valley up to the high-altitude lake of Rif Bruyant. Along the way, you’ll pass through the hamlet and the Rif Bruyant refuge, following the course of this mountain stream. A challenging hike through stunning landscapes, from the Roizonne Valley to the high-altitude lake of Rif Bruyant Accompanied by the stream all along the way, you’ll cross a surprisingly diverse range of landscapes as you ascend: The hamlet of Rif Bruyant, with architecture typical of the valley and meadows bordered by “clapiers” (stone piles from field clearing), Then the cirque where the lake lies nestled, And finally, breathtaking views on the way back. Route: Start from the Mollard parking area. Follow the small road to the heart of the hamlet, then continue on the path toward the Rif Bruyant valley. Ignore the path on your right heading to La Rochette and continue straight until you reach the Rif Bruyant farms. Walk through them; the path narrows into a trail between two dry-stone walls. Continue uphill through the woods and into the cirque, just after crossing a dry streambed—take care not to lose the trail here. Cross the meadows (abundant orange lilies and martagon lilies), then rejoin the path that winds through the forest in several switchbacks. Cross the stream once more and enter the woods where you'll find a charming forest cabin. At the signpost indicating the lake, take the left-hand trail, which follows a forest balcony path leading up to the lake's outlet. As you climb among the rocks, don’t miss the bridal veil waterfall on your right. Return: You can return via the same route or continue up to the col (mountain pass) by following the trail on the right. The descent is via long switchbacks. Important! You are in a protected natural area. Very nice hike to the abandoned farms of Rif Bruyant. Discover this small charming hamlet. Sleeping and eating available in The Rif Bruyant Refuge. START at "Le Mollard" or "Le Fontagneu" Connected to the Roizonne valley by an old "calade" path (a rough cobbled trail made of embedded stones), the little-known Rif Bruyant valley is full of hidden treasures. Discover the stone houses of the old hamlet, with their slate roofs and stepped gable ends. As you stroll through the beautiful hay meadows bordered by low stone walls, you may come across the natural icehouses, once used to age the valley’s cheeses. Parking from Alpe du Grand Serre: Take the D114 towards La Mure. After passing the hamlet of Fontagneu, you’ll find a parking area on your left, near the hamlet of Le Mollard. From La Mure: Take the D114 towards Alpe du Grand Serre. After the village of La Valette, the parking area and the hamlet of Le Mollard are on your right. If the parking is full, you can turn back to the hamlet of Fontagneu, which also offers parking. The additional few hundred meters are signposted and follow the river below. Trail Directions: Take the path toward Le Mollard. Once in the hamlet, turn right to reach the Rif Bruyant stream. Continue through the wooded area until you reach a stone-arched bridge. Do not cross this bridge — instead, follow the stream uphill. At the second bridge, cross over the Rif Bruyant and take the narrower trail to the left, which leads into the forest and up to the old hamlet. Important: You are in a protected natural area. Please stay on marked trails, keep your dog on a leash, do not light fires, and carry out all your trash or dispose of it in the nearest bins. Respecting and preserving this special place is essential!

Since the Middle Ages, Entraigues and Valbonnais have been the two major towns in the valley. The towns produce an impression of coherence, despite a wide variety of architecture. In Valbonnais, we can see, in particular, the castles and fortified manor houses with their impressive dimensions and well-ordered façades, with sculpted wooden doors made for the local notables. Another witness to the town’s history is the train station: from 1926 to 1950, Valbonnais had a meter-gauge railway with electric engines (La Mure – Corps line), with a line running to the cement works downstream, near Le Pont-du-Prêtre.

Introduced in 1949 into the Alps from breeds from Corsica and central Europe, this is an ancestor of the sheep with ammonite horns. Even though the European Union recommends strict protection of the mouflon, it can be hunted in certain conditions. It is ill-equipped for extreme Alpine conditions, and its population levels may fluctuate with the severity of winter.

Spring has hardly begun when high up in the spire a piercing cry is heard. You must raise your head to admire two large birds flying together, alternating acrobatics and motionlessness in the sky, like two silver kites playing with the wind. Their light-coloured, squat silhouette and their darker head help to identify the short-toed snake eagle. They mainly feed on reptiles (lizards and snakes), which they capture by the head and regurgitate to feed their chicks.

The white-throated dipper is easy to spot, as long as you are discreet. It lives along rivers and mountain streams. A small reddish and grey bird, with a short tail, its beak is slender, and it has a white mark from the chin to the breast. This surprising passerine bird is unusual in walking on the river bed in search of food against the current. It lies flat and grips the river bed with its claws, and with its eyes open, protected from the water by a fine membrane, it can spot worms, larva, small shellfish and fish.

The flora on the crystalline scree slopes at low altitude is adapted to very high temperatures which are due not only to the sun but also to the structure of the soil. Here, dark coloured stones have accumulated on the slopes, oriented like solar panels forming a group, favourable to stockage and radiation. Wild roses of all kinds, spiky shrubs thistles have hardened to this atmosphere but so have the Sweet William and the Sheep’s Bit Scabious.

Two species with legs stay close to the track. Quick as a flash, these little saurians escape from your presence while signaling their own... One, around thirty centimeters is impressive because of its size and is green blue colour; it is the green lizard... The other, russet coloured, much smaller is very common, it has not been named by accident; it is the wall lizard. Both feed on insects and hibernate in the cold season...

From an altitude of 1300m, there is an unexpected forest, containing crooked trees, with many branches and smooth grey bark... Some beech trees are grouped there, projecting their shade onto a less hostile slope... They include a dried beech tree on acidic soil, which characteristically does not welcome many flowering plants... A thick carpet of dead leaves crunches underfoot and is punctuated by rare Snowy Wood Rush in Summer and, luckily, Penny Bun and Black Trumpet mushrooms at the end of Autumn.

Damp rocks and obscurity suit these two large ferns which grow in clumps. Distinguishing between them is not a matter of sex, but rather an examination of the characteristics specific to two clearly distinct species. Their fronds, which is what their leaves are called, only die back when new fronds first start to appear in spring.

To access the campervan area, take the avenue Fréjus Michon. The area is reserved for campers and is forbidden for others vehicules. Parking of vehicles must be done only in the specially designated parking spaces. The campervan area is divided in 7 different parking spaces. The following services are available in the motorhome area: - Drinking water: a drinking water tap is available on site. Its use is free and operates by pressing the tap head. The tap is exclusively reserved for refilling water tanks. - Waste disposal: chemical cassette emptying must be done in the designated receptacle located next to the water tap. Wastewater can be emptied in the ground-level inspection chamber connected to the sewage system. For hygiene reasons, users are required to comply with these rules and help keep the area clean. - Household waste: Household garbage must be disposed of in molok-type containers located 30 meters from the entrance to the area. - Toilets: Public toilets are also available nearby.
