Jardin des Fontaines Pétrifiantes

A true paradise with a thousand springs for a vast botanical world tour. Rare plants acclimatised in a sumptuous natural setting of ponds and waterfalls. For a magical moment, discover the phenomenon of petrification, when water becomes stone. To preserve the authenticity of the local attractions that have long made the village famous, the Jardin des Fontaines Pétrifiantes was established in 1994. Nestled in an exceptional setting in France, between the Isère River and a cliff from which waterfalls flow, forming small pools (gours) over time, this garden offers a unique experience. For nearly a thousand years, these mysterious springs have had the unique ability to coat everything in their path with a thin layer of calcite crystals, thereby transforming various objects, mosses, and plants into an astonishing rock called tufa. Surrounding this rock formation, a harmonious and original arrangement brings together more than 800 species of flowers and plant forms, offering a true botanical world tour featuring exotic, Mediterranean, aquatic, and tropical plants. A floral and botanical symphony, brought to life by water, begins gently before forming vast, calm pools and a beautiful waterfall. Discover the intimate charm of this mineral paradise, where nature is not tamed by the gardener but reimagined through his creative vision, with the sole aim of protecting the earth’s vegetation. The harmony between water, flowers, wood, and rock creates a bucolic setting, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in this oasis of natural beauty.

Bachop's Bar

Looking for a warm and welcoming place? Come check out Bashop’s Bar in Cognin-les-Gorges! From morning coffee to an aperitif with a plate of tapas, not to mention the daily special at lunchtime, you’re sure to have a great time. In 2017, this couple changed course and made a big decision by buying the bar in this charming village, located at the foot of the Vercors, along the national highway between Grenoble and Valence. Although Lilian had always dreamed of running a village establishment, taking the plunge isn’t something you do on a whim... What sparked it? A conversation with Martine, the café’s former owner, who had run it for many years with her husband during its heyday. She saw in Lilian, a native of Cognin-les-Gorges, the ideal person to restore this village business to its former glory. From that moment on, the idea took root and gained momentum, and after some careful consideration, Nathalie decided to join him, now that the children had grown up and become independent. With all the pieces now in place, the time had come for this couple to embark on their adventure! It was a successful life change that capitalized on Nathalie and Lilian’s business acumen and enthusiasm, turning Bashop’s into a place where locals can meet and socialize, as well as a pleasant stop for travelers passing through. Whether as a refreshing reward after a hike through the heart of the Nan Gorges or to the village of Malleval, or simply a gourmet break during a stroll among the village’s ancient stone buildings and walnut groves, a stop at Bashop’s ensures you’ll end your day on a pleasant and friendly note. Each season brings a changing landscape of the Vercors and a unique atmosphere. On sunny days, you’ll enjoy the mountain views and the steady stream of hikers and vacationers while sipping a drink on the terrace. When the cold returns, you’ll daydream before the snow-covered landscape, in a cozy atmosphere, with a comforting hot chocolate in your hands. Every lunchtime, you can enjoy Nathalie’s culinary talents and treat yourself to a dish of the day or a homemade dessert. Her specialty? Italian classics such as Milanese cutlets, eggplant parmigiana, and arancini (if you want to know what those are, head over to Bashop’s!). To top it all off and add his own touch, Lilian—a former butcher—offers quality cuts of meat, expertly prepared by Nathalie in the kitchen and also served as part of the quick-service lunch menu. Be sure to make a reservation if you’d like to enjoy them in the evening! To keep things from getting boring, plenty of events liven up life at Bashop’s: A rugby match? Come watch it at the bar and take advantage of Lilian’s sports and rugby expertise—a great atmosphere is guaranteed! Planning a party? Nathalie and Lilian will take care of everything: birthdays, sports events, farewell parties, family gatherings… Just let them know what you’re looking for, and they’ll come up with a solution tailored to your needs, so you can enjoy quality time with your loved ones without worrying about the logistics. And if you’d rather host your guests at home, you can order takeout dishes (pies, tabbouleh…). For even more fun and festive moments, Nathalie and Lilian offer themed evenings: Music Festival, wine and cheese night, Candlemas, open-air dance… Wonderful, convivial moments await—moments that bring the village of Cognin-les-Gorges to life! Bikers, travelers from France or abroad, and residents of the village or surrounding areas—you’re all welcome at Bashop’s!
