Welcome to the commune of Saint-Julien Beychevelle. You can walk or cycle along the interpretation trail from the village to the estuary, from the estuary to the vineyards and the châteaux. There are 9 markers along the way telling you the history of Saint Julien. In addition to the history, this trail will offer you exceptional views of the estuary, the village and the landscapes of vineyards and castles.

Famous for its terroir and its exceptional wines, the town of Pauillac also offers a very pleasant route along the Gironde. The Gironde is the meeting point of the Dordogne and Garonne rivers, an estuary 75 km long and 12 km wide at its mouth. Still wild and preserved, the Gironde estuary is particularly known by photographers for its exceptional lights depending on the time of day and the season. The Balades à Roulettes® (BR®) are short, quiet walks, with a pushchair or a small bicycle, or adapted for people with reduced mobility (in a wheelchair), proposed by the French Federation of Rambling of the Gironde.

We'd like to take you on a stroll through the Médoc, starting from Pauillac, a short loop through this prestigious region. Many of the châteaux are not mentioned here, as the wine-growing area is so rich that it's impossible to visit all of them in a single walk.

In Pauillac, the route follows the estuary and the vineyard to the port of Saint-Julien-de-Beychevelle, where a picnic area offers a spectacular view of the Gironde and its “carrelets.” The arrival at Fort Médoc marks the end of this stage. Classified as a Historical Monument, this iconic site in Gironde was built by Vauban in 1689. This structure is part of the Vauban Lock, a unique defensive triptych in France, also including the Citadel of Blaye and Fort-Pâté.

This walking tour, which takes less than 2 hours, offers you the opportunity to discover the small town of Pauillac. Of course, we are not here in a city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but by lingering on the houses, monuments, streets, squares... the history of Pauillac becomes fascinating!

Discover the emblematic landscapes of the Médoc and be surprised by a fun and surprising journey between the marshes and the estuary! Legend has it that a giant snake once terrified the local inhabitants. The Liron, as it was called, hissed so loudly that cattle stopped working when they heard it. Its head was as big as a tree, its body covered in moss and its undulating movements reminiscent of water, omnipresent in these wetlands. Follow in the footsteps of the Liron as we wind our way past traditional hedgerows, typical Médoc vineyards and peaceful jalles. And if you hear a whistle? Don't worry: the Liron left these parts a long time ago. Keep your eyes peeled: it's probably a kingfisher!

From Cussac-Fort-Médoc, the Amadour path leads to Fort Médoc. Classified as a Historical Monument, this iconic site in Gironde was built by Vauban in 1689. This structure is part of the Vauban Lock, a unique defensive triptych also consisting of the Citadel of Blaye and Fort-Pâté. The route then passes through Lamarque, the gateway to the Médoc, where maritime shuttles connect the two banks of the estuary. The journey continues inland, through the famous village and vineyard of Margaux, up to Le Pian-Médoc, the final Médoc stop.

Château Lynch-Bages, a Pauillac Grand Cru Classé owned by the Cazes Family since 1939, will embark on a new chapter in its early 2017, with the renovation of its wine-making facilities. Architect Chien Chung Pei has been in charge of the project. Technical improvements in these new facilities will centre on the areas : a vast area dedicated to receiving the harvest; the fermentation cellar, allowing a more precise vinification of individual parcels in 80 stainless steel vats; and finally a large cellar, capable of accommodating two vintages at once, hence increasing the duration of with maturation. Work is expected to last two and a half years. Chien Chung Pei is known for his many archievements worldwide . He will work in collaboration with Atelier BPM and an agency that has already completed numerous vineyard projects in and around Bordeaux.
