After skirting the Rhône-Sète canal between Aigues-Mortes and Le Grau du Roi, you're now off to the Mediterranean beaches, resorts and entertainment. ViaRhôna runs through the "20th century heritage" pyramids of La Grande Motte, then along the lido between sea and salt ponds, to the foot of the Palavas-les-Flots lighthouse, close to the city of Montpellier. So grab your towels and swimsuits!

ViaRhôna, from Saint-Gilles to Aigues-Mortes. Between Saint-Gilles and Gallician, the provisional itinerary enters the Camargue Gardoise Grand Site de France and takes you to the Centre du Scamandre. At Gallician, near the marina, you join the greenway that takes you through the Camargue Gardoise and its exceptional flora and fauna. You'll follow the old towpaths of the Rhône-Sète canal through the marshes before reaching Aigues-Mortes, a fortified town surrounded by marshes, vineyards and salt marshes. The Petit-Rhône is an arm of the Rhône delta which marks the administrative boundary between the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Occitanie regions, between the departments of Bouches-du-Rhône (13) and Gard (30) and a more symbolic way between the Gard Camargue and the Grande Camargue. It separates from the Grand-Rhône north of Arles to join the Mediterranean Sea near Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.

On the course you will be able to see guardian huts. A traditional Camargue dwelling, the cabin has whitewashed walls and a sagne roof (marsh reeds). The architecture of these cabins is original: straight walls on all sides except the one exposed to the mistral (north-west) which has an apse (rounded in shape) to provide less wind resistance. At the top of this apse, there is usually a cross or a horn that once served to secure the hut to the ground on windy days. The oldest dwellings in the Camargue, which have persisted to this day, are these typical huts, called gardian huts, wrongly because they were used for farmers, shepherds and fishermen alike. Nowadays, they are built for the pleasure of living in a house of tradition.

Classified as a “departmental reserve”, the Impériaux and Malagroy ponds were acquired by the Bouches-du-Rhône General Council in 1964 to protect these fragile natural environments (2,770 hectares) which are home to many species of shorebirds (barges, knights, sandpipers ...) and ducks (mallards, whistlers, teals ...) attracted by the large fauna of invertebrates.

Lauricet wood is one of the rare wooded areas of the Camargue. The remaining woods are generally along the river, which provides them with the fresh water they need. These woods constitute important habitats for local fauna.
