At the 1st gate continue up along the basalt cliff to the junction at LA PLAINE DU REGARD DIRECTION: BERZEME Then cross the pastures towards Berzème, crossing the junction at BRASSE NEGRE DIRECTION: BERZEME Follow a little road beside the fields up to the crossroads at FAUGERES DIRECTION: ST PONS You will then enter a typical Coiron pasture in which you will stay well over to the left following the markings. Then take a path that goes quite steeply down to La Roche Chérie. From this point, go back down the road to LA PEYRE DIRECTION: ST PONS From there, climb up through the middle of a field, where you will then continue along beside the fence and then turn right onto a path that will take you back to the village. Variant: at La Peyre, climb up to the left on a path on basalt flow deposits. Once on the plateau, turn right along the fences to cross the Plaine du Regard, with a magnificent view point! You will then come back to the Plaine du Regard pillar, which indicates the descent back to St Pons.

La Voulte-sur-Rhône is the starting point of the Dolce Via route. You leave ViaRhôna to cycle into the Eyrieux valley in pursuit of the old locomotives. Your adventure in the footsteps of the old railway line begins in the middle of the peach orchards where you begin a spectacular and gentle climb up the valley to Les Ollières-sur-Eyrieux. Add the view of the valley, its river, its villages perched on the other side and your ride becomes, from the first strokes of the pedals, an enchantment. And the journey has only just begun... The route is signposted "Dolce Via" and is laid out on a former railway line, alternating between greenways with gore (granite sand) or bituminous surfaces and low-traffic roads. The gradient is minimal (1%). The beautiful Corten steel railings (rusty appearance), not only aesthetic but particularly welcome to avoid any risk of falling along the many steep slopes of the route, are a reminder of the route's railway past. Be careful crossing the departmental road 120 when arriving at Les Ollières-sur-Eyrieux before reaching the station.

You now have two options – to climb through the forest of Saou and end up at Bourdeaux or carry on as far as Saillans and climb the Col de la Chaudiere. Between narrow gorges, tunnels and viaducts, your cycling trip on the Dolce Via here follows the traces of the past. A fortified and perched medieval site exceptionally preserved. Located on a rocky headland, in a water drop shape, the village dominates the Barrès plain, spotlighting the remnants of its medieval past. Visitor arrives through the Notables’ door, which is the main access; he can see the particular configuration that allowed defending it. Through the heart of the village, several stalls look like they are ready to open. The Dungeon (from the late 12th century), head office of the City Hall, highlights the limestone stone, in contrast to the chequered buildings that combine white and black stones of Coiron. Fortified village which is listed building as historic monument, Saint-Vincent-de-Barrès is also labelled as a “Village of character" since March 19th, 2012. This medieval village is perched on a basalt neck from the Barrès plain. There are lots of narrow streets, winding roads and houses in basalt. The dungeon is from the end of the 11th century, the additions of the castle have been added in the 12th and 13th centuries. We can see The Chambaud de La Tourette family’s heraldry, above the City Hall door, in the renovated buildings of the castle. Sir "Stéphane", a knight, would have built a fort at the Barry, in front of Saint-Vincent-de-Barrès in 925. Before the 10th century and according to the “charta vetus”, the diocese of Viviers created a foundation on the Gallo-Roman villa territory: the villa Artenica. In 1020, the Bishop of Viviers swapped with the Benedictines monks of Cluny the church of Saint Vincent with the church of Meysse. The Benedictines monks stayed almost until the French revolution. In 1905, Genton of Barrès took part of the first crusade. A disagreement between the Valentinois earl and the Bishop of Viviers about the suzerainty of the Barrès is set in 1213, to the benefit of the Bishop. Barry fort, sold to the Valentinois earl in 1256, is seized by order of the King in 1390, and returned in 1392. From 1424 to 1446, the Barrès, like the Valentinois, belonged to the Duchy of Savoy. In 1467, it belonged to the Royal domain. In 1574, Saint-Vincent was taken by the Protestant but it stayed away from the main disorders from the Wars of religion. It was the same during the French Revolution. The rampart was partially demolished between 1830 and 1905.

The ancestors of the area's once powerful families lie at rest in this 14th-century Provencal Gothic chapel. Must-sees: a copy of the mysterious magic square, a fresco depicting the White Penitents and a Roman milestone.

The village of Rochemaure is an exceptional classified and registered heritage. The buildings are black and white because of basalt and limestone combinations which give it an elegant look. The medieval castle from the 12th century, the ramparts from the 13th century, Jovyac’s castle from the 16th century and Olivier de Serres’ hydraulic system are classified monuments. The old bridge, Notre-Dames-des Anges’ chapel, the old village are in the inventory of registered heritage. But Rochemaure is also well-known for: - ViaRhôna: the cycling road from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean Sea alongside the Rhône, which is 100 meters from the village. The Neck of Sceautres is the most important in Europe. There is a statue of the Virgen Mary at its peck. 130m above the village, the neck, plug of the old chimney of the volcano, allows us to discover the geology of the site. Between 6.6 and 7.7 million years ago, the relief was reversed following the birth of the Alps which generated the central massif. Lava flows filled the valleys and erosion caused basalt collapses. On the neck there was a castle which has completely disappeared today. The site is accessible to walkers, follow the signs.

It was the one of the oldest and most important fiefdoms of the Barons of Aps. Located at the foot of the Coiron, the village was fortified by the 14th century. You can imagine the form of the village by tracing the remnants of the defensive wall. The narrow streets give to the village its character. Northwards you can observe different volcanic formations of the Coiron. Its narrow roads divide the houses and a number of them are typical, or traditional habitats. The hamlet of the Roche Cherie found at the foot of the neck one can find the remains of a castle tower. A chapel has been constructed at the 19th century with basalt rocks. The interior columns of the church are believed to be a part of an older building. This chapel was in ruins due to the passage f time but thanks to a big restoration work.

Alba is bursting with 2000 years of history…What makes Alba so unique? La Roche's hamlet built around a basalt peak and the village established around the castle, also built on a volcanic peak. Located on the edge of the massif of Coiron, surrounded by vineyard, Alba-la-Romaine is proud of its rich historical past. This 2000 years old city has an impressive feudal castle, built on a volcanic dike, fenced by many houses that make it “character village”. Alba, former capital of the Helviens, a Gallic tribe, was, at the beginning of the 1st century AD., an active Gallo-Roman city before becoming the first bishopric’s headquarters of the Vivarais at the end of the 4th century. Today, we can discover the medieval village, clustered inside its 15th century ramparts. The entire village is clad in white (limestone) and black (basalt).The facades are chequered because of the basalt and limestone, local materials used to build stunning houses, given to Alba its particular atmosphere. The castle: at an undetermined period, the Bishops of Viviers have built a square dungeon on a basaltic dike around which the population formed the first castrum (fortified city). From the middle Ages until 1904, Alba bore the name of Aps, the family name of the lordship. During the French Revolution, the castle was ransacked and sold in 1793 as a national property. In 1880, a native started the castle’s restoration. Starting from 1914, several owners succeeded one another until 1975. The restoration began with the help of the Historic Monuments administration. Listed in the supplemental inventory of the Historic Monuments, the current castle, laid out on the foundations of the medieval castles, still has its substructure.
