This walk allows you to discover the bastide of Monpazier and to learn about its special architecture. The structured plan of the bastide is organized by different types of roads, including the carreyrous, small lanes that cut through the blocks of houses, which you will follow. You will pass in turn on the square central place, provided with a market hall, (ordering element of the plan), the place of Cornières which was the place of exchange, trade, justice. You can observe 23 houses with open porticoes, built from the 13th to the 17th century, which formed front stores. The church of St Dominique is a sober building, as is customary in the churches of the bastides. You will pass by the washhouse, protected by a canopy, supplied by a spring and the fountain of the loves, a small building surmounted by a tympanum.

Monpazier is a fortified town founded in 1284, under the reign of the King of England, Duke of Aquitaine Edward I. Eight centuries after its creation, its initial plan has been preserved despite the horrors of the Hundred Years War, famine and epidemics. This rectangular plan developed around the Place des Cornières, surrounded by houses built between the 13th and 17th centuries. With its galleries with Gothic arcades, the square still has its old market hall. This fortified town was surrounded by ramparts and was entered through 8 guarded gates. Only 3 gates still exist today. Inside the bastides, the inhabitants were free. Thus, girls could marry whoever they wanted without asking the lord. Boys did not need a dowry to enter the orders. To settle in the bastide, one had to be able to pay a tax.

Having started in the valley of the river the Dropt, you have to climb a small hill before discovering the large water reserve of Lac du Brayssou. After you have walked around the lake, the monumental castle of Biron appears, when you are on top of the hill of Dropt Haut.

Do not forget your binoculars for this walk on the banks of the lake Brayssou, where you can observe mallards, teals or whistling ducks from a shelter set up by the federation of hunters.

Starting in Saint Martin de Villeréal, a village nestled in the countryside, this walk will first cross a limestone hill before descending into the valley of the river Dropt, home to many mills.

Departure: from the signpost located on the municipal car park of Vergt-de Biron, it is possible to join the loop of the castle by a connecting route (green markings), the effective departure of which is in Biron. From the signpost, go towards the calvary and the church. Pass to the right of the church and go straight down following a grassy path.

Forests are omnipresent here. Woodlands occupy the slopes of the valleys and the meagre terrain of the plateau, contributing to the highly diversified landscape mosaic of this corner of Périgord. Deciduous trees dominate, notably pedunculate oak, chestnut and sessile oak. Maritime pine also plays an important role in the mixed stands and coniferous forests of the Bessède forest.
