Bastide de Monpazier

45 km south-west of Bergerac, you have to discover Monpazier, montis paserii which means mountain of peace. This bastide classified Grand Site National and Plus Beau Village de France has preserved almost intact its original aspect and dimensions: its plan with orthogonal streets, the central square with its well, its market hall and its corner houses, in one corner the church and, to the north and south, two door-towers vestiges of the rampart.
The bastide of Monpazier was founded in 1284 in the name of King Edward I of England, by his seneschal Jean de Grailly under a contract of trimming with Pierre de Gontaut, Lord of Biron, who bequeathed the land to him.
