The shoreline trail

A trail that lets you appreciate the different facets of Lake Vassivière!Start the hike at the car park in front of the Tourist Office in Lac de Vassivière. Walk alongside the beach at Auphelle and pass behind the hotel. Continue alongside the port of Auphelle and continue straight ahead.At the campsite turn right and continue straight ahead. Then pass between two stones and take the path through the forest. Continue through the Crozat Woods.Go back up onto the road, following it on the left, then 50 m further on take the trail to the left and, immediately, to the right. Cross the road and take the path opposite.When you reach the road, turn left and follow the road.Follow the path to the left along the lake. Go past a wooden pontoon and continue straight ahead.When you reach the road, turn left.When you arrive in Nergout, follow the trail to the left. Go down and then go up the stairs and along the beach. Go across the beach at Vauveix. Walk alongside the campsite and the pontoons.When you reach the road, follow the signs for Masgrangeas.After the snack bar, turn left and then right to go along a pontoon.After the pontoon turn left.At the road go towards Masgrangeas and turn left.Take the trail to the left.Take the path on the left just before the road.Turn right and do not miss the path on the left.At the road, turn left.Take the uphill path to the right.Once in the hamlet, at the road, turn left and go towards the path on the left.At the dike, take the road to the right.After the dike, take the trail immediately on the left.After the water ski base, turn to the left along the road to take the dam. After this, continue on the road.Do not miss the uphill path into the forest on the right.At the road, turn right.

Around Crozat Wood

This circuit is perfect for those who love nature, local heritage and getting away from it all.From the church at Beaumont-du-Lac, go down to the Town Hall. Before the fountain, turn right and go down to the D210.When you reach the road, turn left onto it and, 200 m further on, take a track on your right. Walk along beside the low stone wall.At the crossroads, turn left and continue until you reach the hamlet of "La Virolle".On the way, look at the Virolles cross in front of you. Take the road on the left and continue on to a more major road. Then turn right up the hill.Take the path that rises on the left and continues up to a mound. Continue along this path until you reach a tarmac road.When you reach the minor road, follow it on the right until you reach the D222. Cross it and continue on the left. A few dozen metres further on, take the trail on the right that leads you to the Lake Vassivière shoreline trail. Follow it to the left.After a good walk, at the crossroads, take the uphill path on the left to reach a road. `When you get to the road, follow it on the right for a few metres.When you reach the menhir, climb the hill behind it. At the top of the hill, take the Chemin des Poètes, the Poets' Path, to the left until you reach the point where five paths cross.At the crossroads, take the right-most track and continue up to the plateau: It is possible to go and see different viewpoints and exceptional sites by taking the path on your left. (1.5 km round trip). Orientation table, and, below on the right, the site of the Brunagères rocks. Continue on this path and go through a small metal gateway that allows you to climb up through dry heathland. Close the gate tightly, because a herd of harmless goats occupies the site. Once you have enjoyed the exceptional view and the tumulus, retrace your steps to the main path (where you turned left, and then pass in front of the orientation table)Once you reach the main trail, continue on the downward trail on your left to reach a crossroads with a tarmac track. Follow this track to the village of Quenouille.Go through the hamlet on your left. When you reach the road, follow it to the left and go down. After you pass the lavoir (the communal laundry), take the track on the left which passes between two low stone walls (Information panel "Chemin des Poètes", the Poets' Path). Continue along the path up to the forest track.At the track, turn right for 5 metres and then take the track on the left. Follow it until you reach another track.Turn right towards the woods. At the next crossing, continue straight ahead until you reach a pastured valley.Turn right before the tarmac portion. Ignore all the paths that go to the left or right, and continue straight ahead.Take the path on the left, which becomes a stone track. Follow the path until you reach the village and the church.

Circuit of the Lac de Faux

Landscapes of moors, grasslands and wetlands have given way to 45 hectares of water for electricity production.From the Place de Faux-la-Montagne, opposite the 12th-century church, with the covered laundry on the right below, follow the road to Gentioux (D992) for 300 m until you reach the fountain at the edge of the village.Take the "Chemin de la Fontaine-Pouilleuse" on the left of the fountain, leave the ascending path on the left and carry on to the Traluamont crossroads near Lake Faux.Turn left onto the path that runs alongside the lake in a hardwood forest. About 700 m further on, go up the path on the left: it leads away from the lake and reaches a crossroads.Go down to the right on the trail, until you reach a clearing with lots of broom and find the shore of the lake.At the intersection, go down to the right behind the Dorat dam. This multi-arch dam is of a type rare in France. Go back up then continue to the right on the trail beside the lake until you reach a path under the trees. Turn right and take it, cross the bridge over the La Maulde River and continue until you reach a crossroads.Continue straight ahead until you reach a new intersection.Turn right and take the path that goes down through the undergrowth towards the lake. Go along it until you reach the D992.Follow the D992 on the right (in the direction of Faux-la-Montagne), cross the dam (viewpoint on both sides) and fork right just after it to find the trail to follow.Then turn left to reach Faux-la-Montagne.

The water path

To discover another facet of the wealth of architectural and natural pleasures of the Plateau de Millevaches, where its most beautiful treasures are hidden.From the car park 200 m below the intersection between the D992 and the road leading to Jalagnat, take the latter to the right. After the housing development, go down the path to the right.Cross the Pont de la Gane, follow the upward path and turn left onto the path beneath the trees. Pass between two meadows, and you arrive at an intersection.Leave the track on the right and take the trail to the right 20 m further down. Pass between two low walls and arrive at a crossroads.Turn left (here you can go and see a ""miniature"" mill, taking the track on the right). Go through the woods and peat bogs, blueberries in season. Find the road, and follow it on the right for 50 m.Take the path on the left (if you continue straight ahead, you can go to Les Rochers de Clamouzat). Walk alongside the ruins of a shepherd's hut, and you arrive in front of three remarkable beech trees. Cross the road and continue straight along the same path. The village of Arzaillers is on the right. Variant: to shorten the circuit (9 km): take the road on the left for 200 m and follow the GR 440. Cross the road, take the path in front of you and continue to the right on the GR leading to the EDF Holiday Centre (you can go to see the Chammet dam by going through the Centre and following the GR on the right).Before the Centre, go up a path on the left. To reach a viewpoint overlooking the bog of the Ribière de l'Age, cross the D85. Continue straight ahead, arrive on the D16 and turn right until you reach Loudoueineix.In this small typical Limousin village, on the left, go up the small road that turns into a path. At the crossing continue straight ahead, passing in front of the Croix de la Gane. Ignore one path on the right, take the next one on the right, then immediately go left.Go through a forest (you can see a moor on the right), and you arrive on a track. Turn right then left, go through the hamlet of Bessat and follow the small road to the right.Take the D85 for 200 m to the right (you can see the Bessat-Bellevue bog on the right).Take a path on the left. Leave a path that starts on the left. Pass between two low walls. You come out on the D3.Turn right to return to Faux-la-Montagne.

Circuit of Pallier

At the foot of the highest peaks of the Millevaches plateau, explore the small village of Pallier.From the Place de la Mairie-école in Gentioux-Pigerolles, turn left by the town hall onto the grassy path that climbs to the edge of the woods. Follow it until you reach an intersection.Continue to the left in the woods, go past two intersections and reach, after a few hundred metres, a crossroads.Take the track on the left and leave the grassy path on the right. Follow it for 2 km. About 200 m after the high-voltage power line, you reach an intersection.Leave the gravel track and follow the path opposite until you find a granite marker on the left.Then turn right: the path climbs slightly upwards to a tarmac-surfaced crossroads. Cross it and continue opposite by the path that goes down to Pallier for 1km. Keep straight on, through woods and meadows, to a crossroads.Take the path on the left to reach the picturesque hamlet of Pallier.In the village, visit the 12th-century chapel. Behind this building are a 16th-century Cross of Calvary fleuronnée, a 19th-century shoeing crush, the notary's house and other village houses. Return to point 6 by the same path.Turn left onto the path bordered by a low wall: it climbs through the pastures before reaching the D8 (watch out for traffic).Take the D8 on the left for 250 m, leaving the D35 on your left, then turn right onto a path that goes downwards. Pass under a high voltage line and reach a crossroads.Leave the path on the right that leads to the quarry, and take the trail on the left that runs alongside the woods and the stream. Pass to the left of a house on a wide road and join the D16 which leads to La Lézioux.Leave on your left the flowered 16th century Cross of Calvary fleuronnée, and take the first path on the right. Go straight up, all the way to the top, granite cross on the right, then go down the long path through the forest until you reach the D8.Follow the D8 on the left until you reach Gentioux-Pigerolles, where the cemetery houses tombs carved by Jean Cacaud.
