Created over twenty years ago for mountain bike enthusiasts, the Grande Traversée du Massif Central à VTT is a mythical route, a collector's item like few others in France.

This route through the Bresse countryside takes in the natural site of Les Charmes à Sermoyer, made up of sand dunes created by wind and classified as a sensitive natural area. Depart from the town hall square to discover the church, the natural site of Les Charmes (sand dunes), the Groizenière pond and the woods. Don't forget to stop off at the comptoir des dunes for something to eat or drink!

The "Rendez-vous with the Seille" walk starts from the village church square, then crosses the Sermoyer meadow to discover the old Seille and then the Truchère lock leading to the Maillance wood. The Val de Saône is home to floodplains that stretch as far as the eye can see. Rich in plant species, it offers a succession of colours through the seasons. From April onwards, after the floods, purple dominates with the flowering of the meadow fritillary, the meadow cardamine, the cuckoo flower lychnis, and so on. The Seille is a delightful, little-known waterway. It meanders through the fields and groves that border it, where the famous Bresse chickens are reared. There are plenty of pleasant places to moor, often close to riverside inns. The Vieille Seille is a former bed of the Seille that history has transformed into a dead end that is fed from time to time during periods of high water. It was created in 1814 by Prussian soldiers returning from Napoleon's campaigns who cut a meander in order to allow merchant ships to sail as far as Louhans. This 30-hectare federal oxbow straddles the communes of La Truchère and Sermoyer. We also recommend the tour "des Charmes" (10.7km / 2hrs 40mins) whitch passes the Dunes des Charmes.

Located in Gannay-sur-Loire, also called ""near the water"", during this ride you cross the Loire canal and reach ""Port des Vanneaux"". At this stop you have the chance to admire its pleasure boats. This 5,81km long loop takes both the little ones and the big ones along the water. Ride at your own pace on small tracks to reach a pretty bridge made of stone and steal that offers you a nice view on the Loire's lateral canal. Take some time to fully enjoy this landscape. Then join Gannay-sur-Loire, whose history is closely linked to the river and its canal. Today, Gannay-sur-Loire has a 3,5 meters high lock which is the eleventh of the thirty seven floodgate of this 200km long canal. The town also has its own port, ""Port des Vanneaux"", where the sailors old houseboats are now replaced by nice pleasure boats that you can admire by taking a seat on one of the many picnic tables near the port.

Leaving from Arbigny town hall. This trail will introduce you to the commune of Arbigny, a vast area covering 1,747 hectares! Arbigny retains many traces of its agricultural past in its landscape. To the east are the meadows and cultivated fields, in harmony with the woods and coppices, and to the west is the vast Val de Saône meadow, home to troops of cattle from spring onwards. The hamlets are typical of the Bresse region, with linear adobe buildings with hollow tile roofs framing a courtyard.

Depart from Arbigny town hall to explore the surrounding woodland and hedged farmland, the Bresse poultry and the Bief mill. Arbigny's landscape retains many traces of its agricultural past, such as the meadows and cultivated fields, which are in harmony with the woods and undergrowth. You can also see Bresse buildings, mixed farming and Bresse poultry.

Follow this ride to visit four villages along the Loire canal. During this loop you cross the canal and join the Val de Loire Natural Area and then ""Port des Vanneaux"". This 32,2km long loop is recommended for cycling enthusiasts and electric bike users. Starting from Saint-Martin-des-Lais, follow the route to the ""Ecluse des Gailloux"" and continue your way to the stone and steel bridge that offers a superb view on the canal. Join Gannay-sur-Loire and the ""port des Vanneaux"" where the sailors old houseboats are now replaced by nice pleasure boats that you can admire by taking a seat on one of the many picnic tables near the port. Continue to Paray-le-Frésil. Follow the shaded roads and take the small bridge that crosses the Canal to reach Garnat-sur-Engièvre and the Val de Loire Natural Area. Take the wooded roads that follow the course of the river and shelter a unique fauna and flora. A stop is necessary to reach the river by foot.

Located on the east part of the bourbonnais area, ride this loop and discover the longest river of France, the Loire, and its protected area, the Val de Loire. This 8,61km long loop is recommended for both the little ones and the big ones. Starting from Saint-Martin-des-Lais - which takes its name from the branches abandoned by the Loire in flood when it withdraws - travel at your own pace on small roads surrounded by fields where the cows of the bourbonnais gaze quietly. Cross the town of Garnat-sur-Engièvre and join the Val de Loire Natural Area.. Take the wooded paths that follow the course of the river and support a unique fauna and flora. A stop is necessary to reach the river on foot by a small path. You may see a beaver or a frog!

Go to the heart of the Bresse and follow the paths for a discovery. At the foot of its brick castle, the imposing Morel pond and its mill invite you to rest. At the bend of a hill, stands the farm with Saracen chimney of Montalibord with its pond.

Founded in 1866 by a group of local notables, this museum is situated in a beautiful 17th century town house. It has a fine art collection with intimate light-filled landscapes by the early impressionist Antoine Chintreuil; a room dedicated to calligraphy and to the works of Jacques le Roux; another room for popular arts and traditions. Our farm is open to share our passion for breeding: Charolais cows, wagyus (the best meat in the world) and Selle Français sport horses. We are committed to respect for animals, the environment and transparency. Wagyu, the legendary Japanese beef. "Waygyu" means "Japanese beef". This breed is at the origin of several exceptional meat-producing regions (Kobe beef, Hida beef, Ishigaki beef, etc.) throughout the Japanese archipelago. It was at the end of the 19th century, after more than a hundred years of prohibition, that the Japanese population began to consume the meat of oxen previously used for agricultural work. The breed was selected for the marbling of its meat, but also for its docility. Respect for animals and their environment is an integral part of Japanese Buddhist culture. One of the best beef cuts in the world! The marbling (intramuscular fat) gives the meat its taste: its importance is a characteristic of hardy breeds that is lost with selection to increase muscle mass. It explains the unrivalled flavor of Wagyu beef and its exceptional smoothness. Wagyu beef is also rich in unsaturated fatty acids, notably Omega 3. These essential fatty acids are beneficial to health and help prevent certain diseases. Wagyu cattle are particularly well cared for, avoiding any stress. They are fattened throughout their development, reaching maturity at 3 years. Charolais, an excellent traditional meat! We also raise a herd of Charolais cattle, carefully selected to produce quality meat. For direct sale, we reserve young cows aged 4-6 years who have had one to three calves: this is what gives the tastiest, most tender meat. They are fattened with the same high-quality feed as Wagyu cattle, and the fattening period (from 4 to 12 months) ensures that the meat is very marbled for the breed, and therefore very tasty. Breeding in the Ain region. Our methods are based on the renowned tradition of Bresse breeding, and combine the very best in terms of genetics, feed, habitat and rearing methods, with respect for the animal (and the employees). The farm provides the cows' feed: natural meadows, artificial meadows (Swiss Mix) and cereals form the basis. The cows and their calves are raised freely in the meadows during the good season (March to November). We integrate respect for the environment into our breeding approach: hedges are planted, manure is treated by methanization and the energy thus supplied is used to dry fodder in the barn. We optimize crop production by alternating grazing with cattle and horses (thus also reducing parasite pressure). Finally, in keeping with Japanese culture, we take particular care to maintain the docility of our animals through respectful and attentive domestication.

Frédéric Martin welcomes you to his restaurant "La Table Bâgésienne" in Bâgé-le-Châtel (the former capital of Bresse with its castle and ramparts) since 1994. Having worked in the kitchens of Georges Blanc, the Palais de l'Elysée and Le Gavroche in London, the chef now welcomes you with his traditional menus, updated to reflect the local influence. His speciality is pomme Anna de grenouilles, sautéed as in Dombes with garlic butter cream. Cyril Degluaire's Bresse poultry with creamy morel mushrooms and yellow wine, crêpes parmentières and a more modern cuisine, the shepherd's palette in three variations, fillet of beef with a heart of foie gras, the confidential for foiegrasphile, hot and cold with citrus fruits are there to tantalise your taste buds, all served with, essentially, proprietary wines. Sand Dunes at Sermoyer The sand dunes known as “les Charmes” are a big surprise so far from the sea, and are the product of winds and flood waters. The open spaces are surrounded by woodland and some wetlands. This variety of natural habitats encourages an exceptional variety of species. A pedestrian path of 1.5km leads you round and helps you to discover the riches of this rare site, thanks to the presence of a series of signs and labels. Ile de la Motte at St Benigne This island is home to colonies of herons: black-crowned night heron, little egrets, cattle egrets. They may not like to be disturbed during the breeding season. The presence of this island in the river strongly encourages diverse fish life. Entry free - Information Board at Site Entry - Allow 30 minutes

By the 40th day after mobilisation the German High Command expected to have brought the French and British armies to a decisive battle and destroyed them. This conclusion to Schlieffen’s famous Plan relied on the Russians taking at least this length of time to mobilise via their poor railway system. The BEF played a small but significant part in the battle of the Marne even though Field Marshall French had seriously contemplated removing his men from the action to reform and rest. However, this major battle was largely won through the determination and courage of the French soldiers and their leaders. The French snatched a conclusive victory from what looked like an imminent defeat. The German High Command failed in its attempt to capture Paris and force the French government to capitulate. The ‘race to the sea’ now followed, in which the Allies and Central Powers atempted to outflank each other. The line of trenches was then settled from the North Sea to Switzerland. The Allies and the Central Powers now knew that the war would continue far longer than they had thought. The next few years would be spent in learning how to fight a new kind of war with new weapons in the air and on the ground. The price of this process would be paid in blood.

“Prairie” of the Saone Valley This area consists of the huge meadows of the Saone valley and the hedged farmland of Bresse. To the west the rich meadows, floodplain of the Saone, dedicated to cattle and agriculture. This area is of great interest as much for its birdlife as for its plant life. Here you can see common curlews, black-tailed godwits, grasshopper warblers, skylarks and wheatears, “Rale des Genets”(groaning broom) among others.

The Montalibord farmhouse features a Saracen-style mantel with a square, pyramidal bolster of an uncommonly abraded form. It is surmounted by a wrought-iron cross and its sides are decorated with triangular imbrications. Dendrochronological analyses show that the house was built in 1450, 1517-1518 and underwent several alterations in 1780. The chimney and roof were listed in 1944, and the whole farmhouse in 1974. Beautifully flowered in fine weather, it is still in business today (Charolais cattle, pond fishing and tourist accommodation = gîte and chambres d'hôtes). Inhabited until the mid-70s, it still has an open-air fireplace and period furniture (19th c. or even earlier), in particular an imposing archebanc (ancestral bench) with storage and a table. Also on display are a salt chair, a four-poster bed, tables and benches for meals, a tourti (bread ladder), a sink stone, a chest... In the old rooms, a presentation of the farm from 1932 to the present day, with a few tools and photos showing the evolution of farming techniques, but also the philosophy that has always prevailed on this farm over the three generations that have succeeded one another: the quest for quality. The eco-museum can be visited daily. Guided tours available on request.

Grandval farmhouse, named after an ancient parish, has been brought back to life by Morgan Benoît, the new owner since 2021. The great room, with its fireplace and period furniture, is open to visitors by special arrangement during the Heritage Days. The Grandval farmhouse dates back to the very early 16th century. The oak used to support the Saracen fireplace was felled in 1503. The Saracen fireplace was listed as a historic monument in 1925, and the body of the house in 1981. In 2021, the farm was bought by Benoît Morgan, a heritage enthusiast from Mézériat, where his grandparents and great-grandparents were millers. The farm is open for Heritage Days in September. In 2023, more than 400 people visited it. PLEASE NOTE: Exceptionally open on request and for the European Heritage Days.

The village is a treasure trove of souvenirs of its rich historical past, with its fomer hospice, octagonal tower, vestiges of the mediaeval town, the "carronnière" (mediaeval tile and brick factory), poype (man-made mound), church and half-timbered houses - simply use your eyes! Montalibord farm is a listed historic monument in the heart of the Bresse countryside, dating back to the 15th century. Come and immerse yourself in Bresse history by visiting the museum adjoining the gîte. The gîte has a surface area of 90m² and sleeps 5. Camping du Coq, ideally located on the D975 between Bourg-en-Bresse and Tournus, welcomes travelers for a night or vacationers for a longer stay, in a verdant, peaceful setting on the banks of a river.
