Nice advanced courseBetween lavender, forest and limestone, this route offers lovely views of Mont Ventoux, the villages of Sault and Monieux, the Gorges de la Nesque and the Luberon. Obstacles requiring a good level of mountain bike riding. The final part of the circuit (descent to the lake) is not recommended for beginners. Monieux can be reached by road.

A harmonious hilltop village, an amazing natural site, singular hydraulic remains and a rural heritage of beauty! At the entrance of the village, at the junction of the D4 and D15, take the little road going down which is across the school yard. Leave the village, take a beautiful hairpin bend, then lower (point 447) take the track across. 700m further, do not miss the start of the trail to the right (PR). Go down two rocky switchbacks, pass the ruins of the old dam and the mill ponds, then continue to the valley bottom. Pass the Devissé windmill and continue going. 1 - In front of the ruins of the Charlesse mill and its penstock, rise right on a rocky path that winds around the foothills of the Gorges (PR). Switch to the left over the undergrowth and turn left at the intersection of a trail. 2 - At the intersection ''Vezaule'', continue left the balcony trail. After four hairpin bends, come out at the bottom of the Gorges. 3 - Make a short back and forth to the right to see the Jean de Marre mill located just downstream, then go up some thirty meters upstream to a rocky slab. Do not climb the steep path to the right but continue on the one that runs along the river bed. 200m further after a small leap, cross a ford, take the path on the opposite bank in the downstream direction. Climb two stony steep paths, reach the old track and continue climbing the milder slope. Reach the plateau and continue the path until the track. 4 At the crossroads "Lauzière'', turn left and follow the trail. Pass two curves and the entrance to the campsite and continue on the small road of Bois d'Audibert. At the crossroads just after the entrance to the vacation center, go left. Reach the D4 (calvary), turn left and reach the heart of the village of Murs.

At the stop sign turn left (be careful – heavily travelled road). 300m farther, take a right. Take a right before the park planted with centuryold plane trees. After the second bridge at the intersection, take a right. At the stop sign take a left then the first right (2m after the stop sign). 600m later, take a left. At the intersection, take a right then, the “Route de la Bertrane”. At the intersection go straight. Take a first right, long straight road for 4.6km. At the stop sign go right. At the intersection take a left on the D-8 (be careful – heavily travelled road). 50 meters before the roundabout, right on “Chemin Saint André. At the stop sign go straight to Sablet, biking in front of a tennis court. At the intersection go right. Go through the village in the direction of Gigondas. Cross on the left direction Gigondas (be careful, cars are coming from behind). At the stop sign go left (go across in 2 stages – be careful) cross through Gigondas. Take the direction of Vacqueyras on the D-7. In Vacqueyras, go straight. At the roundabout turn right then go 400 m further and take the first left . Follow this road (intersection on the left) to the D7. Then go to the right (be careful, lots of traffic on this road). 1 km from there, take the first road on the left (road to the right). Climb up to the Notre Dame d'Aubune chapel. Continue on the road.

On the Plateau des Courens, overlooking the village of Beaumes-de-Venise, stood a Gallo-Roman oppidum built by the Celto-Ligurians, and naturally defended by steep slopes.

Take the D60 on the left towards Lioux and its cliff. 1-At the exit of the first right turn (tank), turn left onto a dirt road (PR). Get out higher on the D60 and take it to the left. At the entrance of the bend, turn right on a footpath at the foot of the cliff (PR). At the height of the first houses of Lioux, join again the D60 on the left (not marked), then reach the nearby church and the wash house opposite. Continue the road, exit the village of Lioux and continue to the right on a stony path (PR). Walk along the foot of the cliff and climb a steep ramp. Unblock between two houses, turn left and immediately right then continue the path between vineyards, truffle and lavender (PR). 2- - At the mas of La Verrerie, turn right and climb the ancestral path to the crests. Take a bend, turn right and continue 20 m further on the right path (PR). Start to descend along the ridges, then 150 m lower, to sneak right on a path that approaches the edge of the cliff of La Madeleine (local PR, green mark up dots). Get out on the path more marked then repeat twice this escapade right on the edge of cliff. Follow the rocky trail in the scrubland, descend and climb a rock jump (walk) to reach the top of a shoulder (cairn). 3- Continue the path along the ridges. Further on, continue on the path on the right to follow the cliff edge (green dots). Join again the main rocky path (PR and green dots) and go straight up to the top of a bump. Sneak behind on the trail that skirts left over the grove of trees (green dots), then 30 m lower, dive on the right path (PR and green dots). 4- Unclog on an esplanade near the old mill. Go down the paved path and walk along the foot of the cliff. Pass the cemetery and reach the D60. Turn left and go down the road to the hamlet of La Combe.

At the heart of the village of Murs hides the birth house of Crillon le Brave, born in 1543. Born Louis de Berton des Balbes, he will then become Crillon and will continue to wage war. He accompanied 5 kings of France, Henri II, François II, Charles IX, the Duke of Anjou who became Henri III, and it was Henri IV, his comrade, who gave him the name Brave Crillon. His life was made of battles, wounds and victories. He died in 1615 in Avignon, a victim of his countless injuries.

It was around year 1.000 that the land of Murs is given to the Agoult family who will build a castle. For four centuries, it was mainly a stronghold for the soldiers of the lord and the dungeon was then built there. After the Agoult family, came the weapons of the Astouaud family which you can see on the castle gate. The church was built in a Romanesque style in the 12th century inside the castle. The building is private and therefore closed to the public.

The village of Murs dominates to the southwest a depression occupied by farmland. These grounds fit perfectly with the limestone and clay outcrops bordered by an imposing limestone mass. About 35 million years ago, during the Oligocene, deep fractures (faults) outlined a zone which sunk gradually: a Graben (german for ditch). This is the story of the ditch of Murs, which is also the story of Sénanque ...

Between Ventoux and Luberon, this wooded limestone massif opens onto rare agricultural parcels. Contemporary human presence is discreet but the wealth of the dry stone heritage is a reminder of its historical presence. A network of winding roads and ancient mule tracks serve the hilltop villages alongside the massif. These roads, dotted with remarkable oaks, reinforce the bucolic character of this countryside that seems frozen as if it was timeless.

This bastide is called "La Verrerie", the only remnant of a distant past where glass was made. For this, it takes sand, lime and especially a lot of wood to feed the furnaces. From the Middle Ages, the glass works are implanted in the region, because of the magnificent forests that cover Monts-de-Vaucluse and Luberon, which they gradually raze! In 1701, the Simiane council begs to "suppress the glass factory which is the forest chancre". The last glass factory of the country of Apt will close in 1889.

Until the late 19th century, 15ha of natural hay meadows and pastures of this valley floor were partly submerged by the dam water feeding the mills of the Gorges. Today, these grasslands are wetlands, biodiversity supports, which fill the role of water storage, purification, protection against soil erosion and the run-off of the stream. They also have an important place in the local agricultural economy which is based on livestock.

See also the massive massif of Monts-de-Vaucluse, large limestone slab very thick (more than 1000 m). It collects, in depth, the rainwater that will come out in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, 1st source of France by its flow. On their southern edge, the Monts-de-Vaucluse are cut canyons like the one from combe of Lioux, opposite or of Vaumale, in the west, allowing to connect the waters circulation of the plateau with the one of Apt bassin .

Built in the 16th century, This large tank was used to supply the first three mills of the Gorges belonging to the Lord of Murs. It also served as a fishing reserve. Remodelled several times over the centuries, it no longer works nowadays but remains in place. Two parallel walls 80m long held back a pile of earth forming a earth-fill dam. On a quoin, we can see a badge dated 1584 which could be a date of remodelling of the building.

Since the imposing dam placed on the ponds (now filled in) from the village of Murs to the Hameau des Cortasses, about ten flour mills operated from the 16th to the mid 19th centuries. Despite the places hard to reach, following along the ravine are amenities of a rare quality,: penstocks and channels carved in the rock, reservoirs and retaining walls.

First mill of the Gorges and located on the lands of the Lord of Murs, the current building was probably built in the 16th century, as evidenced by the date 1581 on the lintel of a door. It was probably enlarged in the 18th century and more recently converted into a private housing. Initially, it operated with an horizontal wheel turned into a vertical wheel at the end of the 19th century. It was fed by a resclause (small reservoir upstream) located near the old pond.

To preserve the calm of the place and the relation with the guests, we propose you only 2 comfortable rooms on the same level (one of them is a family room). Decorated with care, they each have a bathroom with Italian shower, WC and 140 cm beds. Each room is equipped with fine linen and a hair dryer. Breakfast and table d'hôtes meals are served in the warm, communal living room; on sunny days, you can enjoy them outside facing the Mont Ventoux. The table d'hôtes is available on reservation and will allow you to taste a tasty cuisine made with local and garden products! Tourist information is available on site, and of course we can also advise you on what to see and do. Our 18th century building is located in the front of the old village and has a splendid view over the lavender fields. The Nesk has 18 rooms, a restaurant for groups, a self-service kitchen, a dining room, a bicycle room, a wellness area. Le Nesk offers 54 sleeping accommodations spread across 23 functional and comfortable hotel rooms, accommodating 2 to 4 people (13 to 25 m²).
