Day 2 of the cycle route created by the Marne Tourism Board to reach the Lake Der-Chantecoq from the town of Dormans. This tourist itinerary alternates between the V52 cycle path and the small roads of the vineyards, in order to enrich the journey with cultural visits. This second stage starts in the village of Mutigny and ends in Châlons-en-Champagne, the capital of the Marne. The route begins in the vineyards and passes through the charming little town of Aÿ, before following the cycle path to Châlons-en-Champagne, where a range of cultural activities await you.

From marshes to rivers or waterfalls, from woods to crops, the Sarrins' walk evolves between the villages of Roucy, Guyencourt and Bouffignereux. The first one has a feudal mound, a church of the Reconstruction and an old priory, the second one a restored wash-house, the last one a church with a portal of the 13th century and a farm-castle.

The Berry-au-Bac region bears the imprint of the dramatic hours of its past, as evidenced by the white crosses in the military cemetery, visible on the way back, a Second World War air camp, and a tank monument at the entrance to Chemin des Dames. After the lock and the banks of the canal, the tour returns via the chapel and the Saint-Rigobert devotional fountain.

From an old railway line to a towpath, this route follows the path of two means of transport: the train and river transport via the Aisne side canal. At Evergnicourt, another possible starting point for the walk, a lock from the 1830s bears witness to the region's river past.

It is estimated that billions of letters were exchanged over more than four years between the soldiers on the front line and their families. Early on, the military high command understood that the exchange of mail allowed the men to hold out longer. In a company, the vagamaster is undoubtedly the most expected man every single day. As he braves the danger, he has to carry the news from the trenches to the first lines.

This short trail takes us on a search for the remains of the old village of Craonne, made famous by the mutineers' song, which was completely razed to the ground during the war and rebuilt below a few years later. This moving itinerary is punctuated by a few information panels which allow us to find the traces of the old village and its inhabitants, but also to learn about botany.

On 16 April 1917, at 6 o'clock in the morning, the troops of the 1st French Army Corps set out to attack what was without a doubt the most formidable position on the Chemin des Dames. Since the beginning of the war, the lines german women are here perched on a plateau overlooking the village of Craonne. According to General Nivelle's plans, this position should have been retaken in a few hours. In fact, it will only be partially regained in part during the attack of May 5, 1917.

Not so long ago, the Grand-Voyeux Regional Nature Reserve was still a quarry, where conveyors extracted sand and gravel with a crunch of grains. Excavated in the 1970s, the cavities were gradually transformed into waterholes, quickly colonised by reeds and birds, thus allowing nature to take over. The Maison du Grand-Voyeux is open to the public two days a week, with the aim of helping visitors discover the Grand-Voyeux while preserving biodiversity and the balance of the ecosystems. A discovery trail and observatories allow visitors to discover the incredible landscapes of the site and the multitude of bird species that have found refuge there. Nature activities, workshops and thematic conferences are also organised regularly and free of charge (see programme online at www.maisondugrandvoyeux.fr). Managed by the Agence des espaces verts (AEV) of the Île-de-France Region since 1999, it was classified as a Regional Nature Reserve in 2012. A partner of the AEV, the Association pour la Valorisation des Espaces Naturels du Grand Voyeux is responsible for the scientific monitoring of the site and for certain activities.

After a tumultuous two-year period with Rimbaud which took him to London and Brussels and led to his imprisonment in Mons, Paul Verlaine returned to the Ardennes to soothe his heart. At the Lion d’Or inn, he wrote and finished the collection of poems entitled ‘Sagesse’. He also prepared a virulent book there. In this anthology, he was to publish works by poets as yet unknown: Stéphane Mallarmé, Tristan Corbeer and Arthur Rimbaud. In the preface, he introduces the latter as the great genius of poetry. He was to give his work a name intended to shatter his image as a Parnassian poet. ‘Les poètes maudits’ (The Accursed Poets) was to become inextricably linked with the decadent scene and prove a resounding success. His poetry was finally recognised.
