Cette micro-région se caractérise par des paysages colorés, un bâti local construit à partir de grès rouge et de grès plus blanchâtre, la présence de nombreux vergers de pommes ainsi que des nombreuses noyeraies. Quelque communes (dont Ayen) de l’yssandonnais sont d’ailleurs inscrites sur les routes de la Pomme du Limousin et de la Noix du Périgord, deux productions labellisées AOP. Votre périple sera agrémenté par la présence de 4 points de vue à proximité du tracé.

Situated on a hill (320 m), on the borders of the Limousin and the Périgord, Saint-Robert has preserved a medieval character which makes it one of the 'most beautiful villages of France'. It was the setting for the television series based on the novels of Claude Michelet. Of the Romanesque church, only the choir and the transept remain. The nave was destroyed during the Wars of Religion. Next to the octagonal bell tower, above the crossing, there is a polygonal lantern for the dead and a square defensive tower added in the 16th century. Saint-Robert has a very medieval charm with its old stately homes, its narrow streets and the remains of fortified gates. It was the seat of a Court of Appeals.

The church was part of a vast priory belonging to the Abbey of "la Chaise Dieu" (Auvergne). The wars of religion in the 16th and 17th centuries left their mark on this Romanesque edifice, of which all that remains today is the choir and overhanging transept. To protect itself from attack, the church was fortified in the 14th century, with watchtowers and defensive towers. Inside, an ambulatory, typical of pilgrimage churches, surrounds the choir with its raised arcades. The lightness of the elevation and the sculpted decorations are remarkable. A 13th-century Christ also deserves attention. Self-guided tours. Guided tours are available on reservation (fee payable).

Standing directly on the rock since the 16th century, the Verneuil chapel, with its fluted columns, is the only reminder of the Château Verneuil then located in the adjoining garden, as evidenced by its south-facing entrance door. For centuries, it was an authentic private chapel, until it was donated to the commune of Saint-Robert. Owned by the seigneurs de Verneuil, it passed through a series of alliances to the Noailles family, before being sold to the d?Amarzit family in 1796. During this period of revolutionary turmoil, the chapel was transformed into a stable. It only regained its sacred function in the second half of the 19th century, notably when Philomène Richard d?Amarzit married Emile du Verdier. It was on this occasion that the stained glass windows (1861), still visible today, were rebuilt. The chapel was also used as a burial ground, since

La Fontaine Miraculeuse is located below the village of Saint-Robert, in a vaulted excavation to the left of the cross and tomb. In the past, August 15 pilgrims arrived by special train, and reinforcements were needed at the Segonzac-Saint-Robert station to carry out the inspection It was said to have beneficial powers for sick, sickly or stunted children. To this end, the children were placed in front of the fountain, and one or two liters of water were poured over their heads. After the shower, the child was dressed in a change of clothes brought by the parents, the old clothes being left next to the fountain.

A precious witness to early Romanesque art in the Bas-Limousin region. After founding the Arnac monastery, Guy de Lastours donated the Segonzac church to the monastery. Most of the building bears the hallmarks of the 11th century. Fragments of an important Baroque altarpiece and mural paintings on the choir vault by Nicolas Katkov, an artist who fled Soviet Russia around 1920.
