This pretty little church is under the names of St. Peter and St. Paul. It comprises a long nave, with vestiges of an opus spicatum wall, bearing witness to its 11th century origins. The choir (13th century) is far narrower. A seigniorial chapel was added in the 15th century. The pyramidal freestone spire (restored in the 1st quarter of the 19th century) is similar to that of the Church of St. Michael of Vaucelles in Caen (both unique in Normandy).

The Falaise Gap (or Pocket) was the theatre of war for the last stages of the Battle of Normandy in the Second World War. The Gap was closed between 18 and 21 August 1944. 2 German Armies needed to be encircled. Montgomery changed his plans. It’s was the Poles who met up with the Americans on the Dives at Chambois. General Maczek, commander of the 1st Polish Armoured Division, decided to go for the last foothills of the Pays d’Auge which dominate the valley on Hill 262 north of Montormel and Coudehard. The Gap was made: Canadians and Poles to the north, British to the west, Americans and French to the south. 100,000 Germans were still in the Gap that the Poles had just closed, the majority of them on the West Bank of the Dives. The Canadians attacked Saint Lambert. The Germans had to hold the bridges and counterattacked. The Poles resisted fiercely, defending the hill with bayonets when munitions ran short. Finally, on 21 August at noon, the Canadians rejoined the Poles: the Gap was closed.

Mesnil-Soleil Hill is in Damblainville. It is the southern most part of the Monts d’Eraines range of hills. It rises to 156 meters over 50 mètres It’s base is a chalk sediment, it is south facing which makes it very warm, extremely steep all of which explain the presence of a particular types of vegetation which is unique in Lower Normandy. This environment has led to the development of a whole series of flora and fauna characteristic of hot dry grasslands. You find some rare plants for example this is the only place the Coronilla minima is in found in the whole of lower Normandy, the giant self-heal is not found elsewhere in north west France. Orchids are found in abundance as are lots of other plants characteristic of these grassland areas. A large number of insects are needed to propagate a natural environment such as this. As well as other types of insects, there are over 200 species of butterflies and moths.

Founded in 1131 by Guillaume, Count of Poitieu, the abbey belonged to the Order of Savigny, which joined the Cistercian Order in 1147. The site is very striking, at the edge of large woodlands known as the Bois de Gouffern. There are few remains of the abbey church, just some arches on fine pillars in a pure gothic style, and several remarkable capitals with carvings of vegetation. St André-en-Gouffern, (with Valasse Abbey) are the only places in Normandy with such well preserved buildings for the lay brothers of the abbey. The owners have undertaken major work to conserve and restore the abbey.

Located on a spur of Armorican sandstone, overlooking the Trun plain, Camp de Bierre is one of the largest and most spectacular archaeological sites in western France. The scale and level of preservation are extraordinary: the main dry-stone wall measures 32 metres across and 7 metres in height. Through the story of the site - uncovered by archaeologists - you can travel back in time to the Neolithic era (around 3,500 BC), the date of the oldest known human occupation, via the Gallo-Roman, iron and bronze ages.

The church was built on the foundations of a small gallo-roman temple and is one of the principal examples of Norman (or Romanesque) architecture in Normandy. It houses a Parisot organ made 1745-1746. William the Conqueror established a fair round the church. From the Wednesday before Assumption (August 15), the Foire de Guibray was the place for merchants selling sheets, skins, cloth and silk. This important fair also allowed agricultural produce from Falaise and the surrounding area to be sold. It was the most important fair in West France, the second in France after Beaucaire, and was as famous as those of Troyes or Provins. It’s famous horse fair lasted until the beginning of the 20th century.

Legend has it that coming back from game forests, young Duke Robert spotted a young woman washing clothes in the Ante Valley fountain at the foot of the castle. It was Arlette, daughter of Foubert, a fur merchant in Falaise. Robert fell in love with her and made her come to the castle with him. She agreed, but insisted that she enter on horseback by the main gate. During their first night together, Arlette was woken by a dream: a tree, springing from her stomach, cast its shadow over the whole of Normandy and “Great England”.
