Starting from the picturesque village of Rollainville, labelled "Village fleuri" (Towns and villages in bloom) and awarded "4 flowers", discover the vast forest of Neufeys where history and natural environments intermingle. It is flanked by two valleys at the bottom of which the Frézelle flows to the west and the Sermone stream flows to the east. In this forest, you will find mainly beech trees and a giant sequoia.

Pleasant walk where urban and natural landscaps blend together perfectly. This itinerary will take you through Neufchâteau, town labelled "ville et métiers d'art" (Town of craftsmanship) thanks to its local know-how in the wood and furniture trades. In addition, the town is labelled "Site patrimonial remarquable" (Remarkable heritage site), the first one in the Vosges departement and "Plus Beaux Détours de France" (Most Beautiful Detours of France) in 2017.

This walk will take you in the small village of Rollainville, located deep in a narrow valley on the banks of the Frézelle river and labelled "Village fleuri" (towns and villages in bloom). Discover its architectural heritage : the Roman St. Remy church, the 17th century stone bridges and the calvaries. An exceptional richness not to be missed !

Rollainville is a town that has enormous appeal. From the limestone in most of its architecture to its dry calcaerous grassland, the most important in the Vosges. It is a charming town. This trail allows you to discover various landscapes and to come across a diverse fauna.

This trail is perfect for nature lovers. From the "Maison Forestière du Rendez-Vous" (forest house), you will be able to admire remarkable trees along the path. Amongst others, you will see the Lothar oak, the Douglas-firs and the famous giant sequoia, made remarkable by its height. A stop will be made at the Malovoye fountain, whose name comes from "mal" (wrong) and "avoi", which means "wrong path". During the spring, this spring allows amphibians to come breed.

This walk is a reflection of the typical Western Vosges flora and fauna. Off the beaten track, you will be surprised by the legend of "la Grotte de l'enfer" (the caves of hell), a place full of history. Those who dare set foot in them will be forever changed by it!

The Meuse Cycle Route / EuroVelo 19 is an international route over 1 000 kilometers long, that follows the Meuse and that links the Langres Plateau, where the river rises in Pouilly-en-Bassigny, to the North Sea. Crossing the peaceful waters of the Vair, you enter the village of Autigny-la-Tour, a veritable showcase of authenticity. In the heart of the village, the Château d'Autigny opens its doors to you: this ancient fortified house, transformed over the centuries, reveals all its elegance in the 18th century. Today, this house of character welcomes you for a visit... and even for the night, thanks to its charming guest rooms. In the background, the landscape comes to life: the limestone lawn on the river slope reveals a rare ecosystem. Its natural dryness favors the blossoming of exceptional flora and fauna, to be discovered on a bucolic stroll.

It is reached by a double staircase whose staircase, enhanced by an elegant 18th-century wrought-iron railing, is also framed by two Louis XV-style fire pots. Opposite, in the center of a flowerbed adorned with century-old topiaries, stands a statue of the Nymph Erignie, holding the traditional boar's head in her hands. A few paths lead to a grove housing a former ice house and factory. One of these is clearly inspired by the Canope at the Villa Adriana in Tivoli. It appears in a preparatory watercolor drawing of a Romantic-inspired design for the park, circa 1870. This redevelopment only got off the ground with the digging of the basins and the creation of the walkways. This reference to the canal that linked Alexandria to the Nile was probably inspired by a trip to Italy. It was probably during this trip that the small white marble ephebe placed in the center of the terrace parterre was brought back.

In the heart of Lorraine, at the entrance to the charming village of Autigny-la-Tour, nestled in a natural cirque carved out by the river Vair, stands an 18th-century château that immerses you in the art of living of the aristocrats of the 17th and 18th centuries. This noble residence, surrounded by two hectares of enclosed parkland with majestic trees, offers a peaceful and refined setting. A diversion canal feeds a basin inspired by the famous Canope at Villa Adriana in Tivoli, adding an Italian touch to this French setting. A witness to the upheavals of history, the château was sold as national property in 1793, before passing through several hands during the 19th century.

The river's hillside surrounds the village as a natural amphitheatre. The beauty of the landscape and the high quality of its calcareous soil gather rarely associated elements : the soil's high dryness as much on the plateau as on the hillside, the substrate's decalcification and its vegetation, and the regular pastoral praxis which preserves the truly open environment. This castral site is made up of two castles: the Châtelet, a 16th century building built by the famous Du Châtelet family, which overlooks the Vair, and the Château de Couvonges, a 17th century fortified house. Located in the Vair valley, north of Neufchâteau, the village of Soulosse-sous-Saint-Élophe leads to the discovery of a historical, Gallo-Roman and legendary heritage, with the figure of Saint-Élophe. In the heart of this village with the ancient name of Solimariaca, situated on an ancient Roman road, the discovery of the legend of this Christian martyr, beheaded in 362 by the Romans, takes place through various natural and heritage sites. On the supposed site of Saint-Elophe's martyrdom, on the bank of the Vair, the Sainte-Épéothe chapel was built in the 15th century. It houses a remarkable bas-relief, dated 1614, an altarpiece of Saint-Elophe listed as a historical monument. Restored in 2018, this chapel was awarded the Heritage ribbons. From this place of martyrdom, legend has it that the beheaded saint then climbed the hill, carrying his head under his arm, washing himself on the way in a fountain that sprang from the ground and which he struck with his stick, and that on reaching the top he gave a final sermon. A walk in his footsteps through the forest, across the hill, allows you to discover this fountain halfway up, then to reach the village of Saint-Elophe. There, overlooking the Vair valley, is a gigantic statue of Saint-Elophe which stands next to the church. Built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 15th century, this Gothic and Romanesque church houses the relics of Saint-Elophe, as well as a recumbent statue on which an unusual phenomenon occurs every year: the sun is only reflected on it during the summer solstice. In the heart of this village marked by the legend of this cephalophorous saint, there is also an archaeological museum, in which a rich collection of Celtic and Gallo-Roman remains found on the territory of the municipality is presented.

The municipal archaeological museum of Soulosse-sous-Saint-Elophe presents a collection of elements found on the site of the town and dating from Antiquity: funerary and votive steles dedicated to Rosmerta and Mercury and listed as a “Monument Historique” as well as important elements of Gallo-Roman architecture, furniture for daily use and two military posts. In addition to the visit, you can have a guided tour of the path of Saint Elophe (the chapel and its legend) as well as the 12th century church and its rich furniture.

Two astonishing views amaze any visitor coming to Rollainville : that of a charming and flourished village and that of the unexpected presence of the hillside where are scattered pine trees and juniper. From the ground to diverse sculptures, most of the village is made of limestone which contributes both to the ecology and to the beauty of the place. The chalky grass near the cemetery is the one of the treasures of Rollainville and will provide you an outstanding view of the whole village. Come admire 58 species of butterflies, 44 types of moths, 32 species of beetles and 20 orthopterans.

Follow the Vair river and the main road n°3 to reach Attignéville and its grassland of the Potelon. Turn toward the centre of the village and follow the indicating signs to arrive on the plateau. The Potelon has been classified as environment of European interest with its preserved vegetation which survived heavy human works. After clearings, the rock's exploitation and the agro-pastoral activities have ensured the preservation of the typical vegetation and of the chalky grasslands. On sunny days, discover the numerous species of butterflies showing the highly diversified life of the environment. More than 200 botanical species and more than 460 total plants and animal species have been identified : golden-chains, red fescues, short-horned grasshoppers or marsh fritillaries.

There are in France 265 national necropoli: among the 90 located in Lorraine, including 10 in the Vosges department, the one in Neufchâteau was classified as a “definitive national cemetery” on the 6th of August 1920. Located next to the cemetery in rue de la Paix, it contains 1008 graves of soldiers who died during the two world conflicts of the 20th century. Most of the graves here are of soldiers from the Great War: 956, including 833 French, 120 Germans, one Russian and two Poles. The memory of 1939-1945 is perpetuated by the presence of 52 graves: 47 French and 5 British. The history of the necropolis began in 1914 when the strategic position and the hospital role of the town made the creation of a military cemetery essential, leading to the acquisition of the Tourneval property: it is there that, according to the law of 19 December 1915, "any soldier who died for France has the right to a perpetual burial at the expense of the State". This place of remembrance has been constantly enlarged; today, in the middle of the aisles of sober and similar graves, the visitor discovers many details about the buried soldiers.
