The 21-kilometre-long Sentier des carrières, which has been awarded the equestrian label, is marked out with orange markers, a registered federal trademark. It is designed for discovery and leisure, but also for sporting activities. Riders can use it for equestrian endurance training (outdoor events run at set or free speed over a marked route, with veterinary examinations validating the horse?s ability to cover long distances). Its soil type and gentle gradient make it ideal for all-weather riding. Drive along the back of the tourist office (be careful, it's a climb), past the college, then the Etang de La Lande. Follow the road to the village of Vieux Saint-Hialire. At the next intersection, turn right towards Lastours. At the entrance to the village, turn right to discover the pretty village of Lastours, with its castle, church on a motte and An Mil garden. The entire complex is enclosed by a stone wall. The park is embellished by a variety of elements: an English river, a waterfall with a pond in the forest, rocks... At the bend of a long driveway, you can also discover the park's 19th-century chapel, still owned by the Gay de Nexon family. Built between the 11th and 15th centuries, the church features both Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements. Constructed mainly of Limousin granite, its use was favored for its solidity, a criterion required for fortified constructions at the time. Since 1926, part of the church, namely the apse and choir (Romanesque part), has been listed as a Monument Historique. Facing the château, it bears the remains of medieval fortifications, notably the octagonal bell tower and the bretèche* on the west façade. Due to the Franco-English conflicts, the population needed a place of physical and spiritual refuge. Inside is the reliquary bust of the 15th bishop of Limoges. This is Saint-Ferréol. The Etang de la Lande is the town of Nexon's lake. In season, it is used by fishermen, but swimming is prohibited. The setting is pleasant: a fine sandy beach, large lawns and a beautiful small forest offering the opportunity for refreshing walks in the undergrowth during the summer. The Romanesque church of Saint-Hilaire was built in the 11th and 12th centuries in the shape of a Latin cross. It is the only domed rural Romanesque church in the département. The barrel-vaulted choir is richly decorated with frescoes, the oldest dating from the late 11th century. Desecrated in 1936 and abandoned until the 1980s, it underwent a major restoration thanks to patronage, and was listed as a Monument Historique in 1973. Its eight bays have been fitted with contemporary stained-glass windows by local painter and enameller Léa Sham's. To continue financing the restoration of this remarkable edifice, concerts and exhibitions are regularly organized by the Patrimoines et Cultures association, which now brings this majestic site to life.
