Chéraute, a village in the immediate vicinity of Mauléon, boasts a vast communal territory where panoramic hills, fertile valleys and forested areas intertwine. This potential has led to the creation of three mountain bike itineraries starting from Chéraute, of which Kokoitxe Ttipia is the most affordable. This 25 km loop takes you all the way around the village, although there are three steep climbs that should not be underestimated. First, you fly over the Hoqui and Lausset valleys on the long, panoramic spine of Kokoitxe hill, which ends with a pleasant forest descent. The immense Chéraute wood forms the central part of the route, and it's a pleasure to ride through the cool beech forest.

Kokoitxe Handia is the longest mountain bike circuit starting from Chéraute, Mauléon?s immediate neighbor. Nearly 40 km to cover the long spine of the Kokoitxe hill and the Chéraute woods, before venturing further into the communes of Roquiague and Gotein-Libarrenx. Here, you can take a complete tour of the Lausset valley, via the hills of Arhantsiga and Xardeka, offering remarkable views over Soule, and linking the protohistoric sites of Gaztelaia and Gaztelugain. But the pleasure of the eyes has a physiological price. After the three key climbs of this great loop, the last third on the back of the hills on the right bank of the Saison has a roller-coaster (or rather, Souletine) profile that will also leave you with fond memories!

A must-see in the region, this is a large-scale tour with a strong all-mountain identity: several climbs, most of them rolling, but over 1000 m in total, slightly technical descents to challenge your buddies, and a certain isolation in the middle mountains for the magic of adventure terrain. After the hills of Mauléon, it is indeed a mountain that the route proposes to cross beyond Ordiarp, at the Ehutza pass. As getting to higher ground is always synonymous with wide views, it is finally with great pleasure that we will switch to the valley of Saint-Just-Ibarre.

Leaving Saint-Blaise Hospital, the Pyrenean Piedmont Trail enters the Basque part of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, more precisely on the roads and paths of Soule. The toponymy changes, the relief too. More marked, it forces the hiker to play jumping jacks for a transition stage to Mauléon-Licharre.

This stage of Santiago de Compostela goes through forests and pastures. The walker really enters the Basque Country: unlike the Bearn of the previous stages, the houses and farms are scattered over the territory. The stage ends in Ostabat, a famous village because it is the point of convergence of the routes from Le Puy, Tours and Vezelay.

This stage of the Way of Saint James offers beautiful green landscapes, between thick forests and agricultural areas. It is quite long and does not cross any big village, so it is better to bring a picnic at the beginning. The Church of St. Martin is a small church remarkable for the paintings on its ceiling, dating from the early 17th century. They represent the most important moments of the life of Christ. To better understand the different stages of chestnut processing, you can visit our production workshops, the drying room and the mill. There's also an exhibition retracing the history of chestnuts in the Basque country and around the world. At the end of the visit, you'll be offered a small tasting session, and you'll be able to find all our products in the store. As the seasons go by, you'll get a better understanding of the world of chestnuts by taking a stroll through the chestnut groves, and attending harvesting, scraping and peeling workshops.
