This route takes you by one of the River Vire’s most spectacular structures: the Souleuvre Viaduct. This former railway viaduct, which stands on 5 granite columns, is one of Gustave Eiffel’s lesser-known works. Despite having survived the war, the viaduct was demolished in 1970. Today, it is a popular bungee jumping site.

Vire, a charming market town, boasts age-old origins, even if a vast share of the town was rebuilt after the Allied bombings in 1944. You can nevertheless still admire the vestiges of fortifications built in the 12th century by Henry I, King of England and Duke of Normandy. Monument erected in 1944 to the memory of the American soldiers who fell during the liberation of Vire on 8 August 1944. These soldiers were from the 116th Regiment of the 29th Division on the American Infantry “the Blue and Grey”.

Constructed during the XIIIth Century, based on an XIIth Century Romanesque chapel of early gothic style, it was extended in different styles until the XVIth Century: which saw the raising of the flamboyant gothic chancel, the workmanship of Merveille of Mont-Saint-Michel. It was restored in 1948 after the bombings of the 6th June 1944.

Already listed as 20th century historic heritage in May 2009, Vire’s Town Hall has just been listed as a historic monument. Destroyed during the 1944 bombings, the council building was rebuilt and inaugurated in 1956 by Guy Mollet, President of the Council of Ministers. This modern building was edified according to plans drafted by the architects David and Herpe. It is characteristic of post-war architecture, influenced by work by Le Corbusier.
