On this route you will not leave the Landes de Gascogne forest, apparently flat and monotonous, but really more diverse than you would expect. Houeillès and its fortified church, the site of the chapel of Gouts, Pompogne and its church with a pine-topped bell tower, the fortified church of Fargues-sur-Ourbise, the bastide of Durance, so many listed sites to discover!

From the rest area, popular with motorists on their way to Spain, this loop takes you along the tracks of the old Casteljaloux / Mont-de-Marsan railway line, into the Pompogne forest.

Houeillès comes from the name "Foalh" which means "green branch of pine", used to fight fire in the woods. The country of Lugues, already mentioned in documents of the 14th century, corresponds to the limits of the current canton.

This walk will make you discover the multiple facets of the Landes forest: old plots of land where oaks, cork oaks, hornbeams, chestnut trees, etc... grow and vast areas planted with maritime pines.

Lartigue is the southernmost village of the Gironde, between Landes and Lot-et-Garonne. It is in a green setting that you will discover the Saint-Romain church. 2 km south of the village, direction Allons, in a clearing lined with pine trees, stands the Hourtan farmhouse, listed as a historical monument since 2003. For lovers of friendly games, there is a boulodrome in the centre of the village. Hiking circuits in the forest are also accessible from the village for walks with family or friends.

The present church, whose porch bears the date 1848, replaced a chapel located on the banks of the Ciron (where the cemetery is located). The nave, with a barlong plan, is covered by a plaster vault on wainscotting. The vaulted chevet is slightly narrower inside and ends in a straight wall. The church has come down to us with its stone altar formed by two large Doric columns supporting a pediment, its mural paintings with fine decorative motifs, its chandeliers and its Way of the Cross. It thus evokes a theatrical setting. A porch later came to rest against its western façade.

This imposing Gothic church with a bell-tower-wall, set in a clearing in the middle of the Landes forest, was built on a slight eminence which dominates the Ciron river bed. The enclosure surrounding this 14th century building included a cemetery. On the slope leading from the church to the Ciron, there are three built fountains, as well as four others unbuilt, part of the same circuit and called "miraculous".

Just a few steps from the banks of the Ciron, the village of Saint-Michel-de-Castelnau is situated in a green setting where the village church is enthroned. It is in this peaceful setting that the transhumance route usually crosses the commune some years in the month of September. A few kilometres from the village of Castelnau, in the direction of Bazas, don't miss the park and the underground passages of the old castle of Castelnau de Mesmes, which is open several times a year.

This church would have existed since the Romanesque period, but in 1868 it was almost completely rebuilt. The façade preserves in its lower part some old elements, among them the portal from the XVIth century. The single nave, which ends in the east with a semicircular chevet (described by Leo Drouyn when he passed through in April 1866), has been replaced by a building in the shape of a cross with a well-marked transept and a polygonal chevet. The dimly lit nave is covered with a panelled ceiling. Its painted walls imitate a regular medium device. The choir capitals have an interesting polychrome decoration.

On the outskirts of Casteljaloux, Ferme du Ciron offers a whole world of aquatic flavors from its specialties: fresh fish (gutted, fillets, steaks), oak-smoked fish (sliced or whole), jarred fish (terrines, crumbles, trout spreads). The farm is certified "Artisan Producer of Quality" by the Collège Culinaire de France and "Aquaculture de nos régions".

At the end of the 19th century, nearly 230 sheepfolds of this type existed in the region. Today, only the one in Goualade remains, which is the most remarkable. It has a masonry enclosure made of alios and limestone rubble more than 20 metres in diameter. This type of building provided shelter for flocks of sheep at night, to protect them from bad weather and wolves, but also made it possible to collect the manure that was essential for the cultivation of a few hectares of poor soil near the tenant farms. The sheepfold is listed in the supplementary inventory of Historical Monuments.

It is the richest church in painting in the Bazadais. The entrance door restored in 1999 is from the time of Henri IV as well as the grain chest at the entrance. This chest was used to receive donations and taxes If the church is Romanesque, both sides are of Gothic period, moving forward you will discover the holy table in marble from the Pyrenees also classified restored in 1997. The altar dedicated to the Virgin, restored in 1999, is also classified and the paintings are exactly the same as the original The central altarpiece is an admirable treasure of quality in all areas. Above this altarpiece paintings from the 12th century were discovered during the restoration in 97/98, hidden under a layer of plaster. These partly hidden paintings represent God the blessing father, holding a disc depicting the world, the evangelists around represented by their animals.

The small village of Goualade (Gualada in Gascony) is distinguished by its two remarkable buildings listed as historical monuments: the Romanesque church, which was originally built around the 12th century and the round sheepfold built in the late 18th or early 19th century. It is from the sheepfold that you can enjoy a hiking trail accessible to the whole family. Don't hesitate to stop at the inn located in the heart of the village where you will find a warm and typically Gascon atmosphere.

In the north of the small Roquefort moors, just a few kilometers from the Bazadais region, in the charming village of Maillas, you'll find the Bergerie de Maillas, which raises dairy sheep and makes farmhouse cheeses from raw milk that you can buy directly from the farm, thanks to their direct sales outlet!
