Invigorating Adventure in Salechan, Hautes-Pyrénées

Take advantage of this beautiful wooded walk to discover the magnificent 12th-century signal tower. This easy walk offers views of Estenos, Fronsac and the plain from the shade of chestnut trees.

Average gradient: 3.9% – Maximum gradient: 11% – Summit altitude: 797m. With a steady gradient that reaches a challenging percentage in places, the climb up this small pass is ideal for preparing to tackle the other passes in the Central Pyrenees or for early-season training. Set in wooded surroundings throughout the route, it is very pleasant during hot weather. The route starts from the village of Fronsac (D618). The first few kilometres are gentle, with the occasional slight ‘up-and-down’ section, allowing you to find your rhythm without overexerting yourself.

As surprising as it is beautiful, this walk is full of surprises. The walk will take you first to the chapel of Esputs (or Sputs) nestling on a promontory. Every year in September, a pilgrimage takes place with the inhabitants of Chaum and the surrounding villages. The day begins with a group climb, followed by mass at the chapel, and ends with a shared picnic.

X Country - Altitude: max 655m/mini 463m. The big brother of the PC 19 route, this one rewards you with unobstructed views of the imposing Pic du Gar and the pretty Barousse valley. This route is a little more physically demanding than its younger sibling. It also has some slightly more technical sections, particularly on the descent.

It's a walk from village to village that's accessible to all the family. You will be charmed by the local architecture along this route between the villages. You can also enjoy Lake Saint-Pé, located a few minutes away.

Departing from St Pé d'Ardet, you will climb to the top of the Col des Ares before reaching the pigeon huts above. This unique hike will take you from one palombière to another between the Col des Ares and the Col du Hô. The return trip through the village of Antichan offers beautiful views of the surrounding valleys.

The climb up the Col du Portillon through the fir trees is sure to leave a lasting impression. It is a Category 1 pass (average gradient 6.5%, maximum gradient 14%). From Marignac station, turn right towards Luchon to reach the foot of the Col du Portillon. At the summit, head down towards Bossost, then cross into France and return to your starting point via Les and Saint-Béat-Lez. Each bend on the descent from the Col du Portillon pays tribute to one of the Spanish winners of the Tour de France. At one of the bends, a memorial stone lists these victories and offers a view of the Val d’Aran that’s well worth a brief stop to take in the scenery.

This family-friendly route alternates between cycle paths and back roads. It takes you to the sights of St-Bertrand de Comminges and Valcabrère. Route suggested by the La Roue Libre Huossaise cycling club. From Marignac St-Béat station, turn right at the roundabout and continue towards Cierp-Gaud. In the village, turn right and continue as far as the Pyrénées Hô adventure park. Follow the D125 for 1km to reach the cycle path. Go through Loures Barousse and at the end of the village turn left towards St-Bertrand de Comminges. For the return journey, head for Izaourt and then right through the villages of Bagiry, Saléchan and Estenos. After 5 km, at the roundabout you came to, turn left to get to Marignac St-Béat station.

This lovely, challenging route will take you over two mountain passes, including the Menté, which is often used by Tour de France riders. Route suggested by the La Roue Libre Huossaise cycling club. From Marignac-St-Béat station, turn right at the roundabout and take the D125 to Chaum. Follow the signs for Fronsac. You are now at the foot of the Col des Ares (797m - 8.4km ascent - 330m ascent - % average: 4 - % maximum: 11). At the summit, descend towards Juzet d'Izaut and Sengouagnet. Begin the ascent of the Col de Menté (1349m - 16.8km ascent - 886m ascent - % average: 4.9 - % max: 12). You return to the starting point by descending to St-Béat-Lez, then covering 4km of false flat.

This route features a series of short but challenging climbs, which are a great way to warm up before tackling the mountain passes of the Central Pyrenees. Route suggested by the La Roue Libre Huossaise cycling club. From Marignac-St-Béat station, turn right at the roundabout. Go straight through the village of Cierp-Gaud. The road continues uphill towards Signac, then Binos, Bachos and Guran. Rejoin the D125 as far as Cazaux-Layrisse. Go through the village and at the exit turn right towards Luret and Cier-de-Luchon. On leaving Cier-de-Luchon, return for 3km on the D125, then at the roundabout turn right towards Antignac, Moustajon and Luchon. You will pass through the centre of Luchon on your way to Saint-Mamet, then Montauban de Luchon and Juzet-de-Luchon. Turn right to take the road up to Sode and then Artigue. The 8km climb is challenging, but the views are superb! Take the same road back down to Juzet de Luchon, then turn right towards Salles-et-Pratviel. Follow the D125 for around ten kilometres, then turn right towards Burgalays, which will be the last climb before you reach Marignac-St-Béat station.

An activity leader will be present to take care of the little kids while the bigger ones take on the via ferrata course accompanied by expert mountain guides. The itinerary is fully secure and all equipment adheres to strict safety regulations. You will be provided with everything you need: harness, helmet, ropes and carabiners. At the end of your activity, tea and coffee will be served in a traditional shepherd's hut. A gourmet hike is organized on the Trail at P'art on Thursday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hiking open to all. Jump in your walking shoes for a gourmet day in a picturesque village of the Astarac: Simorre! This course is punctuated by works of art in the heart of nature and offers a beautiful panorama of the Gers hills. At the end of the hike, you will discover the history of this picturesque village where wooden houses and brick architecture compete in elegance, as well as the architecture of the abbey-church redesigned by Viollet-Le-Duc. A lake of glacial origin, the pretty lake of Saint Pé d'Ardet is just outside the village. It covers an area of around 2 hectares, and its flora and fauna make it a perfectly protected nature reserve. On hot summer days, it's great to enjoy the coolness of this site. Fishing licence required. Interfederal, annual, weekly or daily cards accepted. Comply with the regulations of the Haute-Garonne Fishing Federation and the opening periods for mountain lakes.

The museum presents traditions related to honey, hive products, beekeeping and bees. The Sainte Marie Apiaries has been a bee farm since 1963. Today we have 1,000 beehives which are located in the Pyrenees and which in the high season will be moved according to the flowering of the flowers and the varieties of honey we produce. Heather honey, Chestnut, Linden, Flower, Acacia, Rosemary, Orange tree, Sunflower, Spring honey. An ancient marble quarry: one of the few in the world still in good condition, known for its "Roman breach" (in the township of Lez). Votive altars and marble quarries bear witness to the Roman occupation of Saint-Béat (ex Passus-Lupi). The Roman quarry, one of the few in Europe still maintained in it’s original state, has what is known as "Roman breche" marble, where you can still see signs from the marble quarrying.

A 12th century feudal castle with a keep, stately manor, a cistern and ramparts. The present castle dates back to the 12th century. It was built by the Lords of Saint-Béat to ensure the protection of the city and the control of the valley. It was enlarged by its consuls, and under Henry IV, as well as the city was equipped with walls and gates. It was held by captains of arms until the 16th century, and if necessary, they did not hesitate to requisition the citizens of Melles to keep the place. Over the centuries, the castle did not have to endure any important military events, so it has been preserved in its present state. During the epidemic of 1855, a chapel was added to it and the statue of the Mother of God was built.

On the ground floor, the gîte comprises a fully-equipped kitchen (microwave, oven, coffee maker, etc.) opening onto a lovely living room with a large dining table and wood-burning stove (wood supplied), a bathroom with shower, and a lovely sitting room with bay window where old and new coexist. Outside, an enclosed garden and a small terrace with barbecue and garden furniture will allow you to enjoy the mildness of the Pyrenees in the shade of a superb fig tree! Cyclists are welcome! There is an enclosed storage area at the back of the house for bikes, with a washing point and repair kit. Bed linen, towels and household linen are not provided. Bookings are by the week only in summer and for a minimum of 2 nights the rest of the year.

In the heart of the Pyrenees, just an hour from Toulouse, 45 minutes from Luchon and Spain (Val d'Aran), 35 minutes from Saint-Bertrand de Comminges near the Ariège and at the foot of the Mourtis ski resort. Our accommodation is a haven of peace where you can recharge your batteries and discover the region through well-being, hiking, outdoor activities and cultural escapades! We offer you a comfortable yurt, ideal for a stay with your partner, friends or family, nestled in unspoilt countryside with a 360° view of mountains, meadows and forests as far as the eye can see. There are no neighbours here, except us... in the distance, if need be. All the space is private, at your disposal to complete your stay: a fully-equipped kitchen chalet, a dining and relaxation yurt, with table, sofa, games for all ages - even toddlers, and two possible extra beds. A cot, bath and high chair are available. A terrace, shower cubicle and dry toilet complete the facilities. There are outdoor games to play and a hammock to relax in!
