Located a few kilometres from Soulac-sur-Mer, this route offers a diversity of landscapes: maritime pine forests, marshes.. The Cordouan lighthouse, located at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, is the only lighthouse on the French coast still manned, the oldest still in operation and the only one in the world open to visitors. An absolutely unique site, it offers an exceptional view of the Gironde and the coasts of Royandy and the Médoc as a reward for climbing the 311 steps leading up to the lantern. Its classification as a Monument Historique in 1862, the same year as Notre-Dame de Paris, speaks volumes for the beauty of its castle-like architecture. The rocky islet on which it rests, completely covered at high tide, shelters an environment rich in plant and animal species. The Pointe de Grave is the extreme north of the Médoc, between Bordeaux and the Atlantic Ocean. It is located at the mouth of the Gironde Estuary, opposite the town of Royan. This geographical configuration, unique in France, makes it of great ornithological interest during pre-marital migration: the "funnel" effect concentrates the birds that migrate along the coast and those that, further inland, are reluctant to cross the estuary and follow the bank to its end. These two flows then converge above the Pointe de Grave before crossing the estuary in the direction of the Charente-Maritime and, beyond, towards Northern Europe and Siberia LPO Aquitaine coordinates the scientific monitoring of the migration, carried out every year from March to May. More than a hundred species are observed during the three months of monitoring.
