The streams - Les Ruisseaux

Castans, village of the Montagne Noire, is perched at the top of the Clamoux valley, where it spreads out in hamlets clinging to its flanks. As its name suggests, it is the land of the chestnut tree. It is a village nestled in the vegetation with dry stone walls, bridges, terraces and chestnut groves. Signs: Yellow markings Departure from the Cayac parking lot in Laviale (Castans). Go up by the tarred road. At the first junction, go down on the right by the stairs, then turn left. We go up gently in the undergrowth. At the top, under an overhanging house, turn right until you reach the Cloutels stream. Cross it by a bridge made of two imposing stones and turn right at the first junction, then left at the second. At the next junction (La Goussatiéro), follow the path that gently descends towards La Clamoux to where it receives the stream of Aiguebelle. Cross the river by a wooden footbridge and go up opposite to the track. Turn right for 300m. Leave it on the right for a path that goes down, passes the ruins of Perga-Bas and joins the Réalpo stream. Cross the stone bridge and carry on for 800m, then take a small path on the right which descends for 100m and goes up on the left to Quintaine. In the hamlet, turn right onto a paved path that runs down along a garden, crosses the road and continues to Lafargue. Take the road on the left to cross the hamlet and cross the river. Go up on the other bank, cross the road and climb up in front of the chapel. Continue on the grassy path that joins the road. Take it on the right and cross the hamlet of Laviale passing in front of the fountain-lavoir and its strange calvary, then up past the town hall. After the inn, go up to the right to find the parking lot.

The Quiersboutou
3.6 km

The Quiersboutou

An elevated and slightly sporty trail climbing the slopes of the valley, that creeps under the chestnut trees and winds on the slaty ridges. At the top of the Quiersboutou at 837 m/2750ft, there is a beautiful panoramic view over the hamlets of Castans, the Minervois and the Pyrenees Signs: Yellow Take the road along the top of the cemetery, pass the  (gite) and the lavoir and go through the hamlet up to the last house on the right. Go down an alley on the right between houses and gardens. It turns into a path and leads down to the houses of the Moulin de Bru. Turn left, cross the bridge, turn left again for 20m/65ft and leave the road to the right for a small path that climbs between heather and reaches a track. Take it to the left and join the D 9 at the hamlet of Escandelle. Take the road to the right and leave it, just after the bend, for an alley between the houses which, after two bends, becomes a path. The latter also has two bends and climbs gently up to the chestnut trees, then crosses the Triby stream, makes a zigzag and continues to a track. Cross it and walk up along the fence of the telephone relay on 15m/50ft. Leave the path just before the old wild pear tree and turn right on the ridge path, between ferns, broom and rocks up to the top of Quiersboutou where a large cairn (heap of stones) stands. Go downhill, off the path, following the cairns and the markings on the ground. Pass under the power line and reach a pass above the hamlet of Serremijeanne. Cross a grassy path with few marks and 50m/165ft further on, spot on the right a slope which goes down while sneaking in the middle of broom. Follow it through the chestnut groves until you reach a dirt track, which you follow on the right for 50m/165ft and then turn left onto the tarred road going down to the hamlet of Thérondel-Bas. Go down on the left along the house and reach the river. Cross the bridge and go up opposite. At the end of the road, turn right for 50m/165ft only. Leave the track on the left for a path that climbs quickly with a steep slope. It reaches the D 189. Take the last steep path opposite up to the tarred road of the hamlet of Bourdials. Follow it on the right, at the end of the asphalt continue straight ahead by the path in undergrowth; it passes under the hamlet of Raissac and leads to the D 9. Turn right onto 50m/165ft then left the path going up to the parking lot of Cayac.

The eagle rock

The eagle rock

Above the giant chasm of Cabrespine: between shale and limestone where terraces become truffle patches. Yellow markingsCross the road opposite the entrance to the Espace Maguelon and take a tarred road that climbs up to the left. If you look down on the sides, you will soon notice a succession of small signs indicating the names of the plants that have taken root on the path. This botanical trail will lead you to the pass. When you reach the first houses, return to the path on the right, which climbs hairpin turn under holm oaks. Here you take an old path that leads to the cirque of Escoles, that was a century ago, land of the best vineyards and once the land of the lords of Cabrespine. In this first part of the path, the Cabardès schist outcrops, which will soon give way to limestone up to the summit.Suddenly, at the crossing of a path coming from the left, we find a concrete section on 25m/80ft. You are close to the entrance of the "Gouffre Géant" cavern (that you can visit, approximately 45mn, ask about visiting hours (tel: +33 (0)4 68 26 14 22). The path goes around and behind the buildings. Here the route crosses a Natura 2000 listed area which especially protects bats.A few hundred metres above the path runs along a magnificent wall of dry stones. Then we discover on the left in this wild environment some recently cleaned plots of land; they are truffle patches. Shortly after , you reach the pass where you are invited to take a few steps to your left, facing south to get a magnificent view of the Escoles site.  The rocky cirque configuration in the heights is followed downwards by a succession of terraces well exposed and protected from the wind. Leaving the route of the "Las Escolas" loop on the left, take the path to cross the bottom of the valley and pass near a ruined sheepfold to, after a bend to the left, progress for about fifty metres on the side. You will soon find a path on the left that goes down. It leads to the cave of the maquisards, a high place of the WW2 resistance in the Montagne Noire. You can make this detour on the outward or return journey (40 minutes return) to grasp the living environment of these Resistance fighters, most of whom were executed, and to feel the breath of freedom that we owe them.By taking the path back where you left it, you reach a small pass. Leave the path leading to Trassanel on your left and take the one on your right which goes north first over grassy crests, then over pebbles and rocks, following the route which winds between the cairns (artificial heaps of stones) up to geodetic point 700.Then head east on the ridge up to the Roc de l'Aigle. At the arrival, give yourself a time to recover in front of the Pyrenees and enjoy the panoramic view without moderation!

Dawn’s footsteps (Les pas de l’Aube)

Along this itinerary, discover a whole mosaic of beautiful landscapes that man has shaped over time. Olive trees, scrubland, rockroses, junipers and holm oaks. Further on, in the steepest parts, on the cool banks of streams, there is still the chestnut tree, an important source of income for the inhabitants in the past. Old sheepfolds recall that there was also a considerable pastoral activity. Signs: Yellow markings Departure  Place de l'Eglise. Cross the bridge over the Clamoux. Turn right and then immediately left on the "Chemin de Brescou". The path climbs between two walls and then crosses terraces with some fruit trees. Pass next to a “capitella” drystone hut. After the scrubland, go past holm oaks and pass by the old sheepfold of "Costo Granie". Climb up to the crest of the Cocaillère pass. Go down slightly and turn left along the fence. Take the track on the left towards the point of view of the "Traouc de l'Oulo" in the loop of the track, beware by strong wind, this place is very exposed. After 100m turn left and continue on the track. After a few meanders in the heather, turn right to go down to the stream "Belle Bruyère". Continue through the forest. Pass the brook of “Burgasse”, then a sheepfold, the brooks of “Laouzière” and “Fouzéry” to reach the road to “Serremijeanne” hamlet.Cross and go down by the small path between the meadows and the stream. Cross it and go up between two low walls by following the ruins of the farm of “Maïssantoul” underneath. Further on, cross the brook again and by the path, join the road and follow it for 500m. To take on the right the road which goes down towards the brook of “Belle Bruyère”. Pass the footbridge, go up the road from where we see the "Cabanial" and join the road in a loop. Turn right immediately on the downhill path that cuts the loops of the road.
