At the crossroads

From the village of Domsure, a big loop in the Bresse countryside to meet the hamlets and the river of Solnan. Located at the north-east end of the department of Ain, the commune of Domsure borders the departments of Saône & Loire and Jura, the meeting point of the 3 regions: Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne and Franche Comté. It has the particularity to be strongly wooded. This path will offer you pleasant passages through WOODS: Taillis Soldat, Binand wood, Fougemagne wood.... where you will be able to enjoy the scent of lily of the valley in spring. You will be surprised by the presence of crosses erected at certain crossroads, along a path or a road, sometimes in the middle of the countryside, curiosities that you can find throughout the territory. Domsure, the township with 11 crosses (?) : mission cross at the cemetery, cross of the Richardière, cross of the hamlet of the Cross, cross of Mailly, cross of Manet, cross of Champ Maillet, cross of the Carrouge, cross of the Villard, mission cross, cross Peyrouse. A particular cross is visible on the ground, on the "paradise" of the church: the CROSS OF SAINT MAURICE. The coffins are placed there on burial days, and the ceremony begins there. An old belief (forgotten nowadays) located the demon at the crossroads of the roads. A place where, it seems, he enjoyed himself. To keep the evil away from the villages, some crosses, formerly made of wood, today made of stone, were installed at the crossroads. During your walk, in Crocaly, make a small detour to the vicinity of the river "Solnan" to admire the MOULIN DE LESCHAUX. Built on the river, on the site of an old mill, this turbine mill produced bread flour, flour for cattle and the famous "gaudes" flour (roasted corn flour, the basis of the old food). Operated from 1902 to 1969, it is now a house (private property).

The yellow gold of the God of Coligny

From Coligny, capital of the lords of Revermont, destination hike for the plateau of Vergongeat and the Moleron at 550 m altitude where the top of the panoramas awaits us. In March, the plateau turns yellow with the blooming of the daffodils. On the Vergongeat plateau, you can admire the Bresse plain to the west with the foothills of the Mâconnais on the horizon; to the east, in good weather, the Alps and their majestic Mont Blanc. Famous for its undergrowth rich in yellow daffodils, you can pick your traditional golden bouquet in spring. Before leaving the village of Coligny, a frontier zone in the north of Bresse and the scene of many conflicts throughout history, don't forget to visit : The automated sound exhibition of the Gaulish Calendar and the God of Coligny on the first floor of the town hall. Inhabited before our era by the Sequanes, a tribe descended from the Celts, Coligny owes its name to the Gallo-Roman era: colonia. In 1897, a couple of farmers discovered two essential pieces of evidence of this era in a field: the Gallic calendar, the most important Gallic inscription known to date, and a bronze statue, the God of Coligny. The original elements can be seen in the Gallo-Roman Museum in Lyon. The Place des Tilleuls with its curiosity, the Aiguayoir: a large paved basin, measuring more than 10m long, 5m wide and more than 1m deep. It was once used as a bath for horses on the salt road. They would enter the water up to their bellies to wash and refresh themselves. Demonstrations take place for the Bresse fair on the first Tuesday of August. The church of Saint-Martin dates from the 12th century. Remodeled in the XV, XVII and XIX centuries, it has a 46 m high bell tower-porch. To be noted : the design of the bays of the heart, the same as that of the Abbey of Ambronay and the cathedral of St Jean de Maurienne whose bishop, Etienne de Morel, was prior of Ambronay and then of Coligny ; and the 28 wooden stalls whose mericords dated from the end of the XVth century are registered in the National Register of Historic Monuments. The 28 wooden stalls, whose misericords date from the end of the 15th century, are listed in the Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques - objets mobiliers classés.

Our farm is open to share our passion for breeding: Charolais cows, wagyus (the best meat in the world) and Selle Français sport horses. We are committed to respect for animals, the environment and transparency. Wagyu, the legendary Japanese beef. "Waygyu" means "Japanese beef". This breed is at the origin of several exceptional meat-producing regions (Kobe beef, Hida beef, Ishigaki beef, etc.) throughout the Japanese archipelago. It was at the end of the 19th century, after more than a hundred years of prohibition, that the Japanese population began to consume the meat of oxen previously used for agricultural work. The breed was selected for the marbling of its meat, but also for its docility. Respect for animals and their environment is an integral part of Japanese Buddhist culture. One of the best beef cuts in the world! The marbling (intramuscular fat) gives the meat its taste: its importance is a characteristic of hardy breeds that is lost with selection to increase muscle mass. It explains the unrivalled flavor of Wagyu beef and its exceptional smoothness. Wagyu beef is also rich in unsaturated fatty acids, notably Omega 3. These essential fatty acids are beneficial to health and help prevent certain diseases. Wagyu cattle are particularly well cared for, avoiding any stress. They are fattened throughout their development, reaching maturity at 3 years. Charolais, an excellent traditional meat! We also raise a herd of Charolais cattle, carefully selected to produce quality meat. For direct sale, we reserve young cows aged 4-6 years who have had one to three calves: this is what gives the tastiest, most tender meat. They are fattened with the same high-quality feed as Wagyu cattle, and the fattening period (from 4 to 12 months) ensures that the meat is very marbled for the breed, and therefore very tasty. Breeding in the Ain region. Our methods are based on the renowned tradition of Bresse breeding, and combine the very best in terms of genetics, feed, habitat and rearing methods, with respect for the animal (and the employees). The farm provides the cows' feed: natural meadows, artificial meadows (Swiss Mix) and cereals form the basis. The cows and their calves are raised freely in the meadows during the good season (March to November). We integrate respect for the environment into our breeding approach: hedges are planted, manure is treated by methanization and the energy thus supplied is used to dry fodder in the barn. We optimize crop production by alternating grazing with cattle and horses (thus also reducing parasite pressure). Finally, in keeping with Japanese culture, we take particular care to maintain the docility of our animals through respectful and attentive domestication.

Calendrier gaulois et dieu de Coligny

Discovered in 1897, these two Gallo-Roman remains are true archaeological treasures, now preserved in Lyon's Fourvière museum, and copies of which are on display in the hall of Coligny town hall. The Coligny god is a bronze statue (1.74 m) unearthed in multiple fragments at a place called "en Verpois" (north of the commune). It depicts an athletic, naked young man with curly hair, probably the god Mars. The missing eyes were probably glass beads. The raised right arm rests on a staff. Above the hair, a smooth band was used to attach a headdress, probably a helmet (now missing). Unfortunately, the left arm is incomplete. The significance of these naked Mars figures, whose distribution is practically limited to Northern Gaul, is undoubtedly different from that of the armored Mars. Here, the god is practically stripped of his military and warlike appearance; he could be the equivalent of Teutates, his Gallic counterpart. Dating: 2nd half of the first century. The Gallic calendar: discovered in the same place, it also dates from the same period as the god Mars. It consists of a large rectangular bronze plate (1.48 m x 0.80 m), broken into 150 fragments. Although incomplete, it is reputed to bear the longest known inscription in the Gallic language, written here in Latin characters: some 600 different words have been preserved! This is a lunisolar calendar: the months are punctuated by the phases of the moon. Five years are represented, each with 12 "ordinary" months, alternating between 29 and 30 days, to keep as close as possible to the 365-day solar year. However, two "intercalary" months have been added (one every 2.5 years), to avoid too great a discrepancy between calendar time and the reality of the seasons. Each month has a name and is divided into two fortnights separated by the word atenoux (?). Some months are marked ""mat"" (good), others ""anmat"" (bad). The days have no names. They are materialized by a hole in which a wooden peg is placed and advanced daily. A number of notations remain untranslated: they may refer to particular festivals or ceremonies that took place on that day. The perforations correspond to the location of the pegs used to mark the days. It is assumed that the calendar and statue were originally placed in a temple. Religious use would explain the permanence of this calendar, based on an ancient time-counting system that was abandoned in Roman times with the adoption of the Julian calendar in the middle of the 1st century BC.
