This getaway which is devoted to historical heritage, follows several trails and a path that is cut into the rock and leads you on the borderline of the Rougier de Camarès, an amazing patchwork of red ochre soils.From the village centre of Sylvanès take a small road (between the Town Hall and the restaurant) that leads to Maxels.In the hamlet, take the left path and ford the brook twice, walk the ascending path up to a trail intersection.Once you have ford across the brook again, take the left trail and walk around the Bataille farm to the right, the trail continues to rise. On the plateau, take the left trail that leads to the road and to the village of Gissac. Enjoy the scenic view over the Rougier de Camarès, the pic de Roste, the Merdelou and the Monts de Lacaune. Walk across the village of Gissac (castle and washing place are worth to be seen) and head towards the Montaigut castle on D105.At the exit of the village take right a bouissière that runs down towards the Moulin (formerly a fish farm). Walk across the Moulin and go for approximately 600 m up a small road.Before the hamlet of Douzou, take right a track, then at the junction of 4 trails take the one opposite which leads to the Besc hillside catchment reservoir. After the reservoir, take the left trail that gradually rises. Follow this main trail up to a hairpin bend on the right side.100 m after the hairpin bend, take to the left a recently completed pathway (be careful not to miss the trailhead). The path rises zigzagging through the woodland, crosses a 1st trail and joins a 2nd one which is to be followed on the left.Approximately 200 m after this intersection, leave the ascending path to the right and follow the contour line. The hike has already provided magnificent views over the Rougier and far in the distance, offered a first vision of the Montaigut castle. Keep walking up to a field, the logging road runs down to the left and goes along a 2nd field.You soon leave this path to take a track (cairn) which starts to the right of the field. This track crosses a trail and reaches the abandoned farmhouse of Gaujoux. After the farm, go ahead along the track that turns into a path and follows the contour line towards the Montaigut castle. Keep walking on the main path overlooking the Rougier. This path that crosses the Aigue Lebade ravine has been often hewn out of the rock.  The path goes along the plaster mill before reaching the Montaigut castle

"Le Guilhaumard", it’s a karst plateau like no other, a Larzacian islet on the edge of the department of Hérault. Its specific geology and climate make it an eden for botanists. A real discovery!1 - From the walkers’ car park, cross the track and take in front a rocky path, then, a path that, further, goes down to the farm of les Aires. Take it on left on 200m.2- Before the farm, turn right on the trail and go down to Sorgues.The Sorgues resurgence is just before the hamlet on the left (go and back).3 – Cross the hamlet and continue on the road on 2,5km. Turn left to La Mouline, pass over the Sorgues and then continue towards Saint-Rome-de-Berlières, on 800m.4 - Turn on the left hairpin road, ford the stream and continue on the dirt track. Turn left on a path in the middle of boxwood and juniper, then follow the shaded path which climbs and arrives on the plateau at the “Pas de Tirecul”.5 – On the plateau, (you can observe in spring and in the beginning of summer a lot of orchids), turn left and walk along the edge of the plateau  walking on tracks or old “caussenard” paths to join the Mas Raynal.6 – Take the road in direction of Cabanes. Before the hamlet, turn right on the track and follow it on 500m to reach the car park.

This  circuit somewhat physical , you can discover the foothills of the plateau of the Loubière. The return to the valley follows a beautiful single track route in the beech forest.On Main Street, take the road to your right which takes you on to the “Pont Vieux” spanning the river Sorgues. After crossing the bridge, cycle to your right for 50 m.1-    Take a rather steep ramp to your left that leads towards the farm of the Mas du Souquet.2-    Do not take the tarmacked road, but cycle onto the path that follows the contour line and runs to the farm of the Mas de Gély. Go around the farm to the right.3-     You will see a cross at the top of a law dry stone wall; carry on along this route towards the hamlet of la Batisse.4-    Go around the side of the sheepfold and head westward, then cycle up the 1.5 km path which leads to the top of the hill, rising to 730 m.5-    When you arrive at the pass, cycle onto the track which is between the lines of box trees (called a bouissière) that runs towards Vareilles.6-     At the base of two high fir trees, ride up the gentle slope to the right.7-    Take the left turn, and 100 m further follow on the path that runs down to Saint-Félix going through the hamlet of Saint-Caprazy on the way. This hamlet is a former Commandery and the origin of the existing village.

Across woodlands and causses, walk in the footsteps of the knights Hospitaller who over the course of their presence in southern Rouergue from the 12th to 16th centuries have left their mark on the landscape.In the village walk along the main street for 50m towards Cornus up to the point where the street begins to slope down. Take the path on your left that goes up the right side of the vale with a stream running through it. Carry along this path that gradually rises up to the plateau leading to a cross from which a beautiful view over the valley can be enjoyed. Keep on walking along the trail for 300 m up to the junction.At the intersection, take the trail to your right and 500 m further on turn left onto a sunken path up to Mascourbe. When you reach the road, walk to your right until you reach the Borie farm.A bit further on from the farm, leave the road taking the path that slopes up towards the plateau. Follow this path which turns into a forest road and leads to the Lacalm forester's house.Just before the forester's house take the path on your left that leads down to the valley.When you reach a small platform, turn to your right and make a detour to Notre Dame du Cayla chapel. From the chapel, walk back to the junction and carry on along a steep downhill track until you reach the D7 road which you follow until you reach Saint-Felix de Sorgues.

Calades (roads paved with cobblestone) and passes, beech forests and box trees, farmhouses and hamlets come one after another along the way towards the Loubière plateau which provides magnificent views over Saint-Félix and the forested landscape.From the car park, head for Saint-Affrique, following the “calade” (a road paved with cobblestones) which runs down to the left towards the river Sorgues. Keep walking to the left until you reach the Pont Vieux and cross it. After the bridge, turn right and carry on until you reach the watermill, then take the path rising up on the left hand side. You will reach a flat area where you can enjoy a very nice view over the village. You then come to a wide trail.Cross this trail and walk along to a small rest area. Carry on the path which snakes in and out the box trees and eventually reaches another trail. Follow this trail to the left, where you will walk past a house and reach the Mas du Souquet 200 m further on.You will see a stone cross on your right. Carry straight on for about 100 m, walk past the houses and take the right hand path that leads to the Mas de Gély, then on to la Bâtisse.Walk past the farm and follow a hair pin bend where you take a right hand ascending trail leading to a small pass (Sot de la Loubière – 723 m).When you reach the crossing of the trails, take the right hand fork and immediately after a left, which is a descending path through a splendid “bouissière” (a narrow passage defined by two rows of box trees) and a copse of beech trees. Walk past a spring that runs into a channel shortly before coming to the trail which leads to Vareilles.Follow this trail to the right for 50 m, before getting back on the path through a grassy area on your left. Return through the “bouissière” up to Saint-Caprazy which is an old stone built hamlet undergoing restoration works (wood turning workshop).After leaving the hamlet to the right, the path runs down to join a small tarred road which brings you back to the Pont Vieux.From the Pont Vieux retrace your way back to the car park.    

Over the course of an easy stroll, walk across the bridge over the Sorgues to link the old Commandery in Saint-Félix-de-Sorgues with the hamlet of Saint-Caprazy, throughtout a charming landscape.This circuit is part of the "4 chemins, 1 école" series which was carried out by the schools in the Sorgues valley in partnership with the CDRP and the municipal councils in the valley (Versols-et-Lapeyre, Saint-Felix-de Sorgues, Marnhagues-et-Latour).Park your car on the parking lot opposite the school, along the D 7 road. Leave the car park   towards the West and take the calade (a road paved with cobblestones) which slopes down Southward. Turn to the left, then to the right towards the bridge. As you cross the bridge, notice the old mill and the Metasequoia (a resinous tree planted along the left bank of the riverside).Take the path to the right then turn left in the curve to follow the ascending track. Make good use of a flat area to enjoy the scenic view over the village. Continue in the same direction through a few buissières (passages lined up with box-trees). During the spring and summer seasons, notice the numerous wild orchids. At the intersection, make a right turn on a descending trail. Leave the tarred track that slopes down to the right and ford the small brook.Before entering St Caprazy, take the right track. You can walk through this ancient hospitallers hamlet which houses the workshop of a wood turner. Carry on the communal path that runs along the hamlet, then walk downhill towards the North. Ford the brook and follow a rising path. Take the tarred track to the left, walk back to the old bridge to cross it. At the foot of the bridge, take to the left. Head towards the North-West, leave the calade to the right. Notice the old mill in front of which you pass. Follow the calade rising up between gardens (catch sight of pools called « sompes » which serve as a watering system). Walk across the D7 road and climb the stairs.Follow the rue du Revelin where remains of battlements of the ancient Hospitallers Commandery can be seen. Walk through the St-John gate, turn to the right and notice the village spring. Leave the Tourelle square to the right and walk down immediately to the righ (catch sight of a beautiful wisteria!)Walk down the stairs and take left towards the washing place. Carry on your way and leave one after the other two small roads sloping down to the right. Opposite the schoolyard, turn to the right and walk back to the carpark.

Following drailles (pathways used for the seasonal transhumance) and making your way through buissières (narrow passages between two rows of box trees) will allow you to experience the traditional routes of pastoralism. A hiking circuit providing you with the opportunity to discover an unusual small heritage building: la quille du berger.Take the path that goes on the left towards N.E. and carry on about 1.5 km along a beautiful “bouissière” (a narrow passage defined by two rows of box trees) an ancient path which was used to connect Mascourbe to Nonenque.The view of the plateau emerges and the path turns to the right, going S.E. alongside a fence. Walk to the edge of the plateau.Head towards the southwest among box trees and oaks. The path runs slightly uphill and provides very nice views over the Annou vale and the Nonenque abbey. The trail leads you out of the woodland.Keep on strolling along the edge of the plateau and enjoy the scenic view over the Sorgue valley and the surrounding hills and plateaus (Guilhaumard, Escandorgue, Espinouse, monts de Lacaune). Reach “the Shepherds Tower”, which is a very unusual stone building. Keep on walking along the edge of the plateau for about 700 m.Do not take left the path that runs downhill towards the Nonenque vale, but instead walk away from the plateau to take a track on your right that runs along to a path, that turns into a “bouissière” which leads to the hamlet of Mascourbe

Take the D7 road to the left, towards the Northwest. Before the bridge, turn to the right in the Rue de la Ville. On the right-hand side, notice the castle which is open to the public during the summer season. Pass under the arch, which used to be the porch of the ancient battlements. Turn to the right and take an ascending street. At the Plo du Four, take a left turn and walk into the buissière (a passage lined up with box-trees).  Head your way towards Notre Dame du Cayla (right path is a direct route). At the intersection, take to the right and carry straight on. Enjoy the scenic view over the valley all along the path. A 50m long stretch of this path is poorly marked, and you should be careful not to enter into plots of land (to the right and then to the left). Also, notice on the left, the remains of old low stone walls. After your walking through a small oak wood, take the path to the left.At the hairpin bend, turn to the right and walk along the temporary brook. Reach a trail and take it to the right. Follow the old path to the left, notice the wall running along the right side. At the intersection, carry straight on along a broader trail to get back to the path. Observe to the left an old terraced vineyard. Get back to the road.Walk across the D7 road opposite the Cinzelles electric power station, and keep going to the right (towards the East). Catch sight of an old shelter on the right side of the road. Take the path sloping down to the Sorgues river to the left. Walk along the Sorgues up to the car park.

Take your walking stick and go for a stroll along the national forest of La Calm to reach a small Romanesque chapel which overlooks the Sorgues valley from the top of its rocky promontory.After the bridge, turn to the right, then after 50m take a left turn to follow the rue de la ville. Once you’ve passed through the arch walk uphill to the right, then to the left. After 100 m you reach the junction of Notre Dame du Cayla from where we will later walk back to our cars.Carry on your way on a gently rising path and reach another fork.Take a track to the right that turns into a rather steep and stony path. 200 m further on, on the right, leave this path that winds is way up to the Montgrand cross. Keep going until you reach the edge of the national forest. Walk along the edge of the forest to the right, then follow an alley to the left that runs up to the forester's house of La Calm.After the forester's house, take a winding trail to the right until you reach an intersection.Turn to the right towards Notre-Dame-du- Cayla chapel. Walk downhill to the right towards the ravine of La Calm. After three hairpin bends, cross the ravine and go to the right bank of the river where you reach an intersection. Keep going to the right on a gently rising path. Walk through the woodland area, then walk along the edge of the fields up to Versols.

Nestled at an altitude of 520 meters between the plateau of the lakes and the Montagne Noire, Marican is the starting point of many footpaths. A rare example in the Midi-Pyrénées region of an unaltered Renaissance leisure residence, where the lords of the Boissezon de Masviel community (now Murat-sur-Vèbre) resided during the reign of Henry IV. Overlooking the hamlet of Canac by roughly one hundred meters, the preserved site offers a wide panorama over the upper Dourdou valley. A family-friendly walk along restored ancient paths leads to the ruins. Experienced hikers will prefer the itinerary “Le Plo de Canac”.
