The high plateau of the Planeze was formed by the lava flows from the Cantal Volcano. Today, the Planèze sees the revival of a local crop, the blonde lentils of Saint-Flour. From Saint-Flour, head towards Tanavelle and enjoy the 360° panoramic viewpoint over the Planèze, the Margeride and the Monts du Cantal. Continue towards Paulhac and Narse de Lascols, a protected area for migratory birds. The village of Bélinay, with its XIV century neo-Gothic chapel and its castle, is known as the jewel of the Épie valley. Follow the road to Col de Prat de Bouc at the foot of the Plomb du Cantal, the highest peak of the Monts du Cantal (1855 m). This outstanding natural site is ideal for walking and hiking as well as watching migrating birds and discovering the local fauna and mountain flora. Drive through the lovely village of Cézens and then head for Cussac and Saint-Amand’s Romanesque Church. Continue towards Neuvéglise and explore the small village of Orcières and the typical architecture of its houses. Suggested visit nearby: the vast Lanau reservoir and its water sports. At Sériers, drive along the “Megalithic Route” and discover the dolmens of Grand Bois and Table du Loup, witnesses to the Neolithic age. Additional sites are listed in the Megaliths Circuit information leaflet. In Les Ternes, you can admire the XV century feudal castle and its grounds. Drive back up towards Villedieu and visit Ribeyrevieille and Bouzentès, villages famous for their stone cutters.

On fait un bond dans le temps à côté de la tour de l'ancien château de Mardogne construit au 12e et 13e siècle qui finit en ruine suite à un incendie en 1720. Au passage on profite d'une superbe vue sur la plaine de Neussargues et le Massif Cantalien.

A la découverte du Moulin à vent restauré avec du chêne et du bois exotique. Panorama à 360° sur les plateaux vallonnés. A voir également un long abreuvoir en pierres, et fontaine couverte.

From the pittoresque village of Oradour, a steep descent in the wood to discover the ruins of a former water mill and a surprising waterfall... D - Leave the car in front of the village hall. Observe the fountain and the old stone cross with the Christ. Continue on foot in direction of Sainte-Marie. 1 - Take the path which descends opposite the church and follow the sandy way. 2 - Keep left and cross the wood. The path decends to the river Epie.

A likeable hike, especially in summer because the path is mostly in the shadow. A descent and an ascent a little bit exhausting. Possibility to reach the footbridge of Malineux over the river Epie which links Oradour and Neuveglise. D – DEPART: ORADOUR in front of the fountain near the "mairie". After the church follow the direction to MONS. 1 - Follow the tarred road until the oratory (at right) and take the good path to the right (sign "Malineux"). 2 - At the 4 path crossing take a path to the left enclosed by steep hills which descends to the gorges. 3 - At the crossing, at the depth of the gorges take the path to the left leading to the banks of the River Truyère level with the mouth of the River Epie. 300 m left the new built bridge "Passerelle de Malineux" which connnects Oradour with Neuvéglise. Return to the level of the crossing and take a path to the left which follows the River Truyère. 4 - Climb back by a good path (View to the Truyère gorges) until “4 path crossing” then return towards ORADOUR by the same path. Mountainbike: very difficult level, not recommended.

Saint-Flour has always benefited from an exceptional defensive system thanks to its natural city walls: the basalt columns. They are characterized by two lava flows. Built at the beginning of the XIV century, the Collegiate Church of Notre- Dame was converted into a covered market in 1791. Behind its Renaissance façade, the Maison Consulaire, once the residence of the Douët family, houses a cabinet of curiosities with an intimate, authentic charm. The waterfall of Babory rushes in an abyss of quiet and dark water. It is situated near the castle of Sailhant built on a basaltic spur. Access: 500m on foot from the car park.

An arch bell tower characterises this XIII century church, built in basalt quarried from the Planèze, and situated near a feudal castle.

The meandering Truyère River snakes around the steep peak where the ruins of the XIIIth century feudal castle stand.
