Access the Hautes-Bauges and in particular the Réserve Nationale de Chasse et de Faune Sauvage des Bauges, a protected natural area in the heart of the Regional Nature Park. Up there, the chamois are watching you! The Arcalod, the highest peak in the Bauges massif (2,217 m), separates 4 valleys between Savoie and Haute-Savoie. Travelling counter-clockwise, the route first climbs up the forested and then pastoral Bellevaux valley, to the Col d'Orgeval. (The ascent of the Pointe d'Arcalod, on the left, begins at the pass. It is exposed and reserved for experienced alpine hikers). It then overlooks the forested valleys of Saint-Ruph and Combe-d'Ire, where Lake Annecy can be seen in the distance. The final descent to Jarsy offers fine views of the Bauges-devant and the Col du Frêne.

Such a nice day for a hike ! Let's go up to the Allant Cross and discover a typical alpine pasture of the Bauges massif. Follow a large pastoral track winding through forests and pastures, and enjoy a breathtaking view on the highest part of the Bauges massif. From the charming village of Jarsy, follow the track used by the cattle to reach the moutain pasture. You should see them quietly grazing in the meadow. With their chesnut coat and their doe-eyes, the Tarine cow breed is unmistakable. These hardy cows spend the summer here enjoying the rich grass in the moutains, and will give a delicious milk. Soon you will reach the first chalets of Chargieux hamlet, scattered along the pass. Continue until the Allant pasture. The Mount Trélod will then appear before you, as an impressive mass of stone. Finally you will reach the Allant Cross, in a grassy flat offering a splendid view of the surrounding massifs. Here is a great place for a pic-nic ! Enjoy your "tome des Bauges" cheese sandwich while watching the paragliders take off and fly over your head. Just one final effort to reach the Plan de la Limace, where you have a good chance to see marmots...

Easy and pleasant mountain bike ride that follows the waters of the Chéran by snaking at the foot of Mont Pécloz near the hunting and wildlife reserve (regulations).

Let's go for a hike in the heart of the mountain pastures! What a fantastic feeling to travel through this wide open pastoral valley, to reach the Col de l'Arclusaz, perched at the top of the cliff. How to feel like the kings of the world! First take this little path that goes up, hidden in the forest, following the stream. Then suddenly, coming out of the cover of the trees, the wide valley of Arclusaz opens up in front of you. You enter a landscape of chalets and mountain pastures, framed by the Pointe des Arlicots and the Grand Parra to the east and the Dent de l'Arclusaz to the west. As you progress through the vast meadows towards the bottom of the valley, you come across chalets here and there grouped together in small families of three or four. When you reach the Col de l'Arclusaz, suspended at the top of a cliff, you dominate the Isère valley which stretches out at your feet. Above you, Napoleon's hat, a huge stone headgear, towers over you by a hundred meters. You then descend by another route which will take you past Notre-Dame de Bellevaux. Stop for a few moments to savor the calm and admire this charming chapel erected in 1839 on the site of a former monastery

From the valley to the summit, passing through forests, pastures, ridges and alpine meadows: a varied hike off the beaten track. 1/ Take the road to the right of the town hall, cross a bridge and in the next hairpin bend, take a path leading up to the St Bernard chapel. 2/ After the oratory, continue on this ridge path, still ascending. You'll arrive at the foot of the Fullie mountain pasture, where you can reach the chalets at the top to take full advantage of the view. 3/ Return to the Col de la Fullie, opposite your arrival point in the mountain pasture, and take the path leading up to the Chalet de la Cha. 4/ From here, a track leads steeply down through the forest to the valley. Cross the main road and enter the hamlet of Epernay. 5/ After turning left at the chapel, continue straight through the village. At the "Epernay la fruitière" crossroads, turn right towards Routhennes. Ditto at the next junction (signposted "Sur les frênes"). 6/ At an intersection of forest tracks, turn left. Paths and tracks alternate on the hillside until you reach the "Les Crics" intersection, where you take the track down towards Le Villard. Quite steep and stony, it brings you to the main road, which you cross to take the path opposite. 7/ This climbs the opposite slope, taking you to the abandoned hamlet of "Le Creux du Mont" (15 mins). Head back in the direction of Ecole to start the return journey, where you'll reach some lovely pastures. The path descends gently to the bottom of the slope, rejoining the original route.

This family-friendly walk takes you on a rural excursion around the village of Ecole. It takes you through the meadows and up into the mountains, with views of the highest peaks in the Bauges. D/ Church parking lot. 1/ Follow the road towards Jarsy, then turn right at the wooden signs for "Arclusaz". 2/ Climb a few hairpin bends to a crossroads, then take the right-hand road. 3/ Continue straight on to the next hairpin bend (approx. 1km), and take the yellow-marked path. It joins the road a little further up. 4/ Follow the road for a few hundred meters until you reach a relay antenna. From here, enjoy the view of the village and surrounding mountains. The Dent de Pleuven can be seen to the northeast. 5/ Follow the track alongside the antenna on the left, then turn right just after the building. You leave the tarmac road for a path that crosses meadows and groves. 6/ At the "Les Crics" intersection, take the track down towards Le Villard. Steep and stony, it brings you to the main road, which you cross to take the path opposite. 7/ Climb up the opposite side. A steep 15-minute climb brings you to the abandoned hamlet of "le Creux du Mont". 8/ Head back in the direction of Ecole. 9/ You reach beautiful pastures on the heights, with majestic views of the highest peaks in the Bauges. In front of you are Trélod, Arcalod, Pécloz... 10/ The path descends gently to the bottom of the slope. After crossing a bridge, continue straight ahead on the road back to the parking lot. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Crossing a meadow - what a technique! On your walks, you'll sometimes come across meadows. All are farmed by farmers. To preserve these sites, and out of respect for the farmers, remember to close the gates behind you to prevent animals from escaping, and stay on the paths: grass that has been flattened by trampling becomes unusable by the farmer!

This oratory is evidence of monastic life and, more recently, of the life of the Bauges mountain people. You can enter the chapel dedicated to Saint Bernard. From the car park, cross the main road and set off on a narrow street by following the red and yellow markings. A wide uphill path taking an hour goes to the Oratory. From there descend straight down the meadow with your back to the Oratory. Continue through a forestry track to reach a tarred minor road which brings you to the village of La Compôte. Go up through the village by taking the direction of Jarsy. On your way out of the village at the cemetery, take a path to the right which leads to the hamlet of Etre through the plain. Go back to the village of Ecole via the road.

A lovely walk for discovering a pass between the highest peaks of the Bauges Mountains. Be careful, the chamois are watching you! From Jarsy, go up to Précherel and park on the outskirts of the hamlet (car park on the right). Go back up the track which follows the road and passes under the Pont de Leyat Bridge and quickly climbs towards the alpine pasture track. After 45 minutes, ignore the track on the right leading to the "Plans", and instead climb straight up to the pass. From the pass redescend via the track which goes horizontally through the larch tree plantation. At the Chalet des Plans, veer right to reach the junction of the climb. Go back down the same way to the starting point or via the less steep track which is longer, but has a clearer view.

A lovely energetic hike in the heart of the Wildlife and Hunting National Reserve where 360° panoramic views and wildlife await you! From the car park, take the bridge to the left, pass in front of the chapel and then the ruined village. Continue in the vale which narrows. When you are below the Pointe des Arces face, take a path to the left, that's in good condition, which leads to the "Chalets de l'Armène". Leaving the chalets, turn your back to Pécloz Mountain and continue in the vale leading to the "Passage de l'Armène". From here, go up left to reach the summit via a steep grassy knoll. Descend along the ridge leading to the mountain pass between Pécloz and Armène. Then make your way back down to the "Chalet de l'Armène" via beautiful slopes and come back down the same way as the ascent.

The Bellevaux Valley, at the foot of Mont Pécloz, offers a highly enjoyable outing. The nature trail through the valley explains the different components of the landscape and the delicate balance between mankind and nature. From the Bellevaux parking lot, the path climbs the steep slopes of the forest side and soon joins a shady track. At the end of the forest, the path leads you through meadows to the ruins of the village of La Chapelle, and then back down along the nant de la Lanche (Chapelle). The return journey takes you along the riverside path of the Chéran. Important: this itinerary is located in the Bauges National Hunting and Wildlife Reserve, where special regulations apply. Commonly known as the 'Cathédrale des Bauges', this parish church was built in 1867, thanks to support from Napoleon III in response to a population surge. 13m high and sitting atop a sloping ledge, this church can be seen from the Col du Frêne. Its Basilica-esque layout, erected by the Revel diocesan, is unique in the Massif des Bauges. On the eastern side, two Medieval capitals come from the former church, now destroyed. Inside, the main alter, made of white marble with columns of red and green marble, rests upon a black marble base. The Autel de la Vierge, also made of white marble, is decorated with a high relief of the Holy Family.

The Chapelle de la Sainte Fontaine was built in 1839 on the site of a former priory, which was founded and inhabited by the Benedictine monks from the year 1050 until the French Revolution. Until the beginning of the 18th century, the Benedictine monks owned the second-richest estate in the Bauges, after the Chartreux d'Aillons. Located in the heart of the Réserve de Chasse et de Faune Sauvage des Bauges, the chapel contains the remains of the Pères de Bellevaux and is a pilgrimage destination on the Monday of Pentecost. There is a signposted nature trail from the Maison Faune-Flore. Take the 'Vallon de Balleveaux' path to learn more about the secrets of the wildlife, plants, activities and agriculture. This syncline is one of the central points in the valley, whether it is seen from below from Ecole or the Vallée de Sainte Reine in the south, or from the banks of the Lac d'Annecy in the north. Spectacular hikes are possible on the steep slopes. Le Trélod-Charbon is one of the most emblematic perched synclines in the Massif des Bauges, caused by a fold of a thick limestone layer during the formation of the Alps, approximately 20 million years ago. Raised upwards and flanked by fault lines, is represents a well-preserved example of the sedimentary rock folds in the region. Unusually, its interior contains a series of preserved nummulites (marine sediments from the Eocene period, including an outstanding limestone layer), well-marked by a little rocky ledge. Access via Bellecombe-en-Bauges and the Reposoir et les Ecuries-devant carpark, then the pass under la Dent des Portes, to reach Trélod. Set off from Doussard (Saury) or Bellecombe-en-Bauges via the Col de Bornette to reach the Charbon via the chalet de la Combe.

This 5205-hectare Reserve Nationale de Chasse enjoys international acclaim thanks to its chamois goats, an iconic species in the area.

On the edge of the Chéran, these relatively stable stony banks are not simply outcrops: they reveal the glacial past of the Bauges, and have a lot to teach us. During the Ice Ages, when the bottoms of the valleys were covered in ice, deposits from the eroded mountain became blocked by the glacier, which prevented them from being carried downstream. Local glaciers or ice tongues overflowing from the Cols des Bauges caused the formation of these fluvio-glacial terraces to stack on top of each other, and we can see the traces of the heights of these glaciers. When the glaciers melted, the rivers easily carved through these deposits as they meandered through the valley. Often covered in vegetation, the structure of these terraces is clearly visible - the laminations and direction of the stone allow us to read the meaning of the paleo-currents. This beautiful Terrasse des Bauges is located at the start of the Balade du Pissieu, on the right bank of the Nant d'Aillon. Parking at the bridge over the Nant d'Aillon on the road linking Attilly to Villaret Rouge, the Châtelard lake or the car park at the Iles du Chéran leisure centre.

Pissieu waterfall forms just downstream from a source into which most of the rainwater and snow-melt drains into off the Margériaz Plateau. It is created from a karst resurgence of water from the so-called "Vauclusian source"; Beneath the entrance to the source, a submerged underground network plummets to a depth of 50 metres before making its way back up towards the Margériaz Plateau. Up to now, 79km of underground networks have been identified under the Margériaz Plateau, including the 'Tanne du Cochon' network, which has an elevation difference of 825 metres between its starting point on the plateau and its resurgence at Le Pissieu. The waterfall is accessible all year round. The site is particularly spectacular after heavy rains or when the snow melts. The waterfall is accessible from several starting points. From the nearest parking lot (Pissieu Waterfall parking lot), allow a 30-minute walk to the waterfall (and the same to return).

Chapelle de la Correrie de l'Ancienne Chartreuse (Aillon-Station)

Explore an underground world, in an secure environment at your own pace. Ladders, hand-holds and corridors provide access to a series of small caves and narrow, twisting passageways, creating a real feeling of exploration. Previously more active and covered in a much thicker layer of limestone, the cave is one of the openings to a huge underground network supplying the Cascade du Pissieu, in Chatelard. Only a few hundred metres are suitable for families - the rest is for experts only. The cave can be accessed through the porte cochère, along a secure path with ladders and fixed metal handles. A full loop (45 mins) will take you along the bottom of the well of Tanne du Névé. Information panels are dotted along the walk, providing more information on the different karst formations you will see. Access via the Route d'Accès at the Margeriaz resort, with parking at one of the final bends. Next, follow the forest track for a few hundred metres, until you reach the 'Place à Baban'. An information panel will tell you which route to follow, from which it is only a 15-20 minute ascent to the start of the Spéléorando.
