Discovery of Chalosse through its natural and historical heritage.

A long stage links Hagetmau, in the south of the Landes department, and Orthez, an emblematic village in Béarn, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Via a succession of country roads, it passes through the villages of Chalosse until it enters Béarn via the crossroads town of Sault-de-Navailles. Portions of the road finally take over and bring you closer to Orthez, a stage of great historical and architectural interest.

A flat route through the Hinx forest. Be careful, this section of the Adour Trail takes many tarmac roads with little traffic.

Located in the Chalosse region of the Landes département, Habas is one of the 24 communes of the Communauté de Communes du Pays d?Orthe et Arrigans. This charming village, set on the heights of the Gave de Pau, has a population of around 1,500, and has maintained its vitality thanks to a rich network of associations and the preservation of its local shops. Habas takes its name from the Gascon word "fabas", meaning a place fertile with beans. Located on the Roman road linking Bordeaux to Astorga, the area became a stopping-off point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela in the 14th century. At the same time, the town began to develop around its feudal castle, the site of today?s town hall. In 1638, Louis XIII granted Habas letters patent authorizing the holding of a market every Friday.

Misson is a small village that stretches over 14.7 kilometres. It is situated at an altitude of 90 metres and has about 800 inhabitants. It is crossed by the stream of Leplace, the stream of Grand Arrigan and the stream of Yats. Misson is twinned with the town of Arnac in the Cantal. In 1641, Misson belonged to the royal provostry of Dax, which bought from Louis XII certain domain rights. Fifty years ago, Misson was home to renowned clog makers and gem makers. Today these trades have disappeared but they reappear in some craft exhibitions. Nowadays, the identity of the village reflects a long history.

A unique walk that leads you to Buglose in the footsteps of the young Vincent de Paul and takes you to the white chalet, passing by the strange ice house and its pond. 2 markings to follow: red on the first part of the circuit and yellow on the second.

Discovery of the Tursan and its hillsides

This pleasant walk, marked out with interpretation desks, allows you to discover the main historical monuments of the medieval town of Orthez: the Hôtel de la Lune, the Pont Vieux, the Maison Jeanne d'Albret, the Church of Saint Pierre, the Château Moncade. In the Middle Ages, Béarn was at the heart of all the events that marked this period: the pilgrimage, the crusades, the creation of bastides... And Orthez is the capital! The Béarnaise dynasty of the Foix Béarn family (Fébus) dreamed then of a free country going from Orthez to Foix. Later it was Jeanne d'Albret, mother of Henri IV, who gave Béarn Calvinism as the state religion. This walk also offers a variety of bucolic atmospheres: the banks of the Gave, the Moncade vineyard which offers a view of the town, the Coudane wood and its arboretum, and the Grecq lake, a space dedicated to biodiversity.

This stage ensures the junction between the Gave de Pau and the Gave d'Oloron, but also between the old town of Orthez and the historical "sauveté" that is Sauveterre-de-Béarn, with its remarkable concentration of heritage treasures. Undulating from one hill to another, the route also crosses the Orion Hospital, on land that has been used for centuries to welcome pilgrims.

The Chai d’Antin is a 17th century wine storehouse, with a monumental timber frame that has stood the test of time. The place is a reminder of the fact that, in 1761, Mugron was the farthest port down the Adour, from which Chalosse wines were shipped to Bayonne by barge. The building is the largest wine storehouse in the style of Béarn, despite its geographic location in Chalosse. It took no fewer than 500 m3 of oak – nearly 6 hectares! – to build the structure of this extraordinary storehouse. Fans of art and culture can head upstairs, where you will be impressed by the amazing rafters and exposed stone walls, as well as by the painters, photographers, sculptors and other artists chosen to display their pieces here. The church of Saint-Laurent is located at the end of a rocky spur and dominates a vast landscape. Originally, the church had only a small nave extended by a chevet, built in ferruginous sandstone. It was enlarged in the 18th century. The interior of the church is richly decorated, such as the vault of the choir, decorated with vivid naive paintings. The 18th century furnishings are protected as Historic Monuments, including the high altar and its tabernacle, the six gilded wooden candlesticks and the Eucharistic cupboard and its baldachin. The brightly coloured altarpiece was applied at the time of the Counter-Reformation and includes a programme of images favoured by the Roman Church at the time: Christ the founder, saints, preferably ecclesiastics, to highlight in the face of attacks from the Reformation.

Of the church built in the 12th century, only the apse and some elements of the decoration remain today, such as the cul-de-four, the choir's cradle and two capitals behind the altarpiece. The nave was completed with a tower in the 14th century. In the following century, the church was enlarged again. In the 17th century, a porch was added to the north of the tower. Notables were buried there. Twelve elements of the church's furniture are protected as Historic Monuments. In the nave, a wooden chandelier stands out, this rare and luxurious light fixture dates from the 18th century. Notice also the woodwork surrounding the whole building. Made of three different marbles, the imposing high altar, from the 18th century, is a beautiful example of the rocaille style. It was made by the Mazzetti brothers, Italian sculptors of great renown at the time.

The Caupenne bullring consists of a fixed stand, overlooking a sandy track. The wooden façade is painted red and white. During the races, removable stands are installed, as well as barriers called talanquères to close the track and form a protective corridor. The presence of these arenas testifies to the current vivacity of this custom. The Landes race consists of waiting motionless for the charge of a wild cow that weighs up to 250 kg. The spreaders dodge at the last moment, thus creating a gap. The jumpers jump over the cow! The course landaise is one of the four forms of bullfighting practiced in the world and is distinguished by two particularities: it is practiced almost exclusively with cows and bulls and there is no killing of the animal.

The first castle of the Caupenne family, built on a motte castrale at a place called Castet-Bielle, did not survive the Wars of Religion. All that remains of the original castle is a mound and the remains of the earthworks. A second castle was built in the 17th century in the centre of the village. Of a classical regularity, the building is composed of a central building flanked by two wings in return forming a courtyard. A coat of arms adorns the pediment of the entrance door. The interiors have preserved some rare decorative features, notably a large lounge with high panelling. Around the castle, the outbuildings extend over the six hectares of parklands. An oven located in the northern outbuilding is listed as a Historic Monument. The castle of Caupenne is private, so it is not visited but can be admired from the gate and the village square.

Overlooking the Louts valley, the terreplein of the Romanesque church of Saint-André in Bergouey offers a remarkable panorama of the Chalosse and the Pyrenees. The fortified tower, built in the 12th century, has a defensive walkway at its top, allowing you to move around in safety from possible attackers. The main interest of the church comes from the wooden furniture (from the 17th to the 19th century). The balustrade of the tribune and the communion table are the most striking features. In the main choir, an altarpiece offers pilasters and fluted columns. These frame a painting representing the Crucifixion. The tabernacle represents Saint Andrew, patron saint of the parish, and Saint Wolf (Saint Leu). A fountain located near the church is dedicated to him. As is often the case in the churches of Chalosse, the main portal still has its old woodwork, here from the 18th century.

In the centre of this charming village of Chalosse, this church dates from the 11th century and was transformed in the 16th and 17th centuries. Restored from 2001 to 2011, the work revealed remarkable wall paintings: a large crucifixion dated 1603 on the old south portal, another scene on the same wall of the nave and a scene of the Last Judgement dated 1610 on the vaulted surface Christ is seated in the centre on a rainbow, his feet on a globe topped by a cross. Mary and St. Joseph (bearded) are respectively on his left and right. Christ, with his arms raised, shows the stigmata of the Passion. Around him, figures (humans or souls) emerge from the tombs, arms raised or hands joined. In the upper part of the vault, above Christ, the four evangelists are represented. The south wall shows the Last Supper (in part) and the Crucifixion.

In the charming flowery village of Larbey, the old and current bullring is an integral part of the local heritage. Indeed, close to the porch of the church and the war memorial, are the stands of the old bullring around which the Landes Races took place until 1973. Since then, the villagers have voluntarily built the treated wooden arenas that are now the current ones.

At the top of an imposing hillock, in the enclosure of the former cemetery, which can be reached by a monumental staircase and a portal, the church of Notre Dame de Baigts immediately offers the visitor the strangeness of the architectural layout of its chevet.

In the south of the Landes, in the village of Baigts, the tradition of the landaise race goes back to the 19th century. At that time, the access to the village square was closed by carts and the brave youngsters would dodge the onslaught of the cows. In 1911, the town council decided to build boxes and a stand, adjacent to the town hall, located on the town square. During the patronal celebrations of August 15th until 2004, the track was closed by removable wooden barriers. For safety reasons, they had to be removed and replaced by metal fences, but the stands remain natural: the spectators sit on the slope surrounding the square from the church, in the shade of the fir and chestnut trees.
