Hike 240 kilometres of a trail once used by merchants and mule-drivers, Crusaders and pilgrims heading for St Gilles’ tomb or to Le Puy-en-Velay for its Black Madonna. This document presents only the segment of the trail between la Bastide-Puylaurent et l’Affenadou, most of which is on the territory of the Cévennes National Park. Once used for grazing livestock, the slopes of Loubaresse have gradually turned into broom-covered heathland. The municipality is doing everything it can to keep the areas clear by encouraging pastoralism and helping a farmer to settle there.   P - () From the "Loubaresse départ" post near the church, join the upper road (), cross over and climb the transhumance sheep track to the windy Pratarabiat pass    Pratarabiat – Follow Borne 5,9 km. Take the track on the left along the ridge.   Bravefont - Follow Loubaresse 1,4 km. Leave the track to descend steeply between two fences on the left (). Croix de Saint-Jean - Follow Loubaresse 2,2 km. On the right, cross the hairpin-bend road. Continue through the meadows. To reach the village, leave the track for vehicles to the Loubaresse’s only hamlet (Lichechaude) and take the path to the Lichechaude stream. Cross the stream and go up to join the GR () below the farm-restaurant. Le Dervet - Follow Loubaresse 0,7 km. Go left to return to Place de Loubaresse.

The high plateau of the Planeze was formed by the lava flows from the Cantal Volcano. Today, the Planèze sees the revival of a local crop, the blonde lentils of Saint-Flour. From Saint-Flour, head towards Tanavelle and enjoy the 360° panoramic viewpoint over the Planèze, the Margeride and the Monts du Cantal. Continue towards Paulhac and Narse de Lascols, a protected area for migratory birds. The village of Bélinay, with its XIV century neo-Gothic chapel and its castle, is known as the jewel of the Épie valley. Follow the road to Col de Prat de Bouc at the foot of the Plomb du Cantal, the highest peak of the Monts du Cantal (1855 m). This outstanding natural site is ideal for walking and hiking as well as watching migrating birds and discovering the local fauna and mountain flora. Drive through the lovely village of Cézens and then head for Cussac and Saint-Amand’s Romanesque Church. Continue towards Neuvéglise and explore the small village of Orcières and the typical architecture of its houses. Suggested visit nearby: the vast Lanau reservoir and its water sports. At Sériers, drive along the “Megalithic Route” and discover the dolmens of Grand Bois and Table du Loup, witnesses to the Neolithic age. Additional sites are listed in the Megaliths Circuit information leaflet. In Les Ternes, you can admire the XV century feudal castle and its grounds. Drive back up towards Villedieu and visit Ribeyrevieille and Bouzentès, villages famous for their stone cutters.

The history of the Garabit Viaduct (1880-1884) tells the story of an extraordinary engineering feat, once thought impossible, which overcame the challenges of a rugged landscape to become a timeless masterpiece. Its light, jagged silhouette has elevated it to the status of a true work of art. Clad in red, its elegance and technical finesse are enhanced by a spectacular lighting display. A technical achievement and the world's highest viaduct at the time of its completion, this colossal structure (564m long and 122m high) was a major event. This once-unthinkable project contributed to France's international influence. Its bold engineering is said to have directly inspired the design of the Eiffel Tower, built just five years later in 1889. Since 2017, this listed historic monument has been part of a European initiative aiming for UNESCO World Heritage recognition, alongside five other exceptional bridges. The Garabit Viaduct is also a gateway to the natural site of the Gorges of the Truyère, offering numerous scenic and tourist attractions. Along the D4 linking Lablachère to Montselgues, admire the magnificent 180° panorama. Marking the south-eastern extremity of the vast Cévennes massif, the Vivarais Cévenol corniche is a long ridge stretching north from the Prataubérat massif towards the foothills of the southern Ardèche to the south-east, overlooking the deep valleys of the Drobie to the east and the Thines and Chassezac to the south.

The Tanargue massif, which culminates at almost 5,000 feet, overlooks the entire Pays Beaume-Drobie. This vast crest of granite which stands out in the landscape takes the name ‘Tanargue’ from the protohistoric era. “Taranis”, the Celtic god of the sky and thunder appeared in all his violence on “Arga”, the mountain, hence the name Tanargue, the ‘Thunder Mountain’.

Hundreds of refugees have been hosted by the population. The Memorial offers a permanent exhibition with an interactive approach like films, animated movies, multimedia tools and a testimony room.
