Country circuit at the foot of the mountain, take the path to the village of La Ségnarié passing by the cave of Lacalm and the town of Aiguefonde. Aiguefond is one of the many pretty piedmont Tarn villages tucked into the foothills of the Montagne Noire. Its name is Occitan and comes from the words “aigue” (water) and “fonde” (bottom or bed,) and indicates the presence of springs and underground rivers. The thickness of the layers of chalk sediment through which the water trickles in the entrance to the grotto or cave is proof of this. The cool waters of the Coubas, a charming stream, run down from the mountain heights. The walk continues through a bucolic countryside of meadows and handsome oak hedges. It is an initiation to the rural heritage of discrete and harmonious constructions such as “pesquiers” and “béals” (reservoirs and ditches for irrigation puposes) which were used to encourage the growth of grass (and hay.) Similarly handsome hedges of oak and alder provided shade for the cattle to rest in, to shelter from rain, or simply to scratch.

This path goes from the piedmont of the Black Mountain to its plateau, through the old farms of Courbas, la Récuquelle, les Soulhols, Prat Nouvel…on the footsteps of our history. First, you walk undergrowth among small chestnut-trees and some beautiful ones, local variety of chestnuts:” la dauphine d’Aiguefonde”; they remain from the cuts in the 50s when tannin was used in the wool industry. After 400m, you will be in the cool atmosphere of conifers. The top of the mountain was inhabited by some tenanted farmers with meadows, now covered with high beeches and forests with conifers: douglas used for its wood, fir-tree, pine, spurce, larch…From time to time,you will have magnificient views on the plain and the mountain. A different path will allow you to reach the la Récuquelle dolmen”Peyra Estampa”, mystic or place.of graves. A small path will lead you there. Coming down to Aiguefonde is as sporting as going up, through the communal forest. Back to the village, discover the castle, the small streets, the wash-houses all along the stream.

The trail of Puech d'en Blanc begins on the heights of the medieval village of Aussillon. It goes in the Black Mountain overlooking the Mazametain basin and arrives at the Lake of the Montagnès. A few kilometers on the GR7, and the trail returns to the village. At the gates of the mountain, the historic village of Aussillon stands up; it has been inhabited for centuries first of all by Gauls, then by Wisigoths. Along the half-timbered houses, the path goes up to cooler places, across chestnut-trees and rapidly high resinous trees. The forest tracks are above 300m from the village and the Thoré Valley that you can admire through clearings. Soon you will see the clear waters of the “Montagnès Lake”where you can swim or have a nice nap under the trees. The Pic de Nore which is not far shows its large slopes with meadows and moors. Back to the village, you will have walked with the old generations of woodcutters, shepherds or peddlers who used to walk between plain and mountain for their prosperity.

The medieval village of Hautpoul offers a superb panorama of the Mazametain basin. Discover the vestiges of Saint Sauveur, take the GR7 and continue your hike to the castle Trumpet then finish your route to the two old fountains. This path takes you through the picturesque little village of Hautpoul, perched above Mazamet on the mountainside. The charming medieval character of the village will urge you on and up. You can stop for a minute under the old chestnut tree in the square from which the walk begins; but before that, climb up to the statue of the Virgin Mary to admire the view of the valley below. You can get a real feel for the village perched on the mountainside with its natural defences formed by the rocky cliff faces below. The view will amply reward your efforts so far. This walk will enable you to enjoy a rich variety of landscapes in just a few kilometres, passing through the forest with a number of different species and constantly changing flora. You will come across other historical sites as well as the fascinating village of Hautpoul; the church of St Pierre des Plots, the remains of the tower of the chateau trompette, and finally the Spring path that lends its name to this circuit.

Panoramic view of the Arnette gorges from the medieval city of Hautpoul to the Croix de Prat through the Cayenne factory. Starting from the Cathare village of Hautpoul, the historic birthplace and protector of Mazamet throughout the middle ages, this circuit climbs up and down and along the steep Arnette valley that was in the past the economic powerhouse of the region. It runs beside the small terraced gardens which used to be the pride of the inhabitants of Hautpoul. After the Cayenne factory, it crosses over to the south slopes of the Arnette and leads through meadows to the old Brettes farm and the Prat Cross. Along the route there are a number of viewpoints across the valley and towards the town, opening out onto the plain and towards the Pic de Nore (highest point in the Black Mountains). Just aside from the main circuit, by the houses of the Jamarié, there is a rocky outcrop on which the ruins of Saint Sauveur church can be explored. This was the first parish church and was used until at least the 16th century.

Historical trail that traces the history of Mazamet along the Arnette and its current. Mazamet owes its existence and its economic development to the Arnette River. It is the quality and the force of the tumultuous water flowing down the green slopes of the Montagne Noire that brought the industry to this town. Taking you on a journey along its banks, through hills and forests, this circuit will allow you to discover the industrial and human evolution that has taken place over the centuries. Just like a history book, 16 signs retrace the steps of the main elements of this exceptional adventure which, through the wool and leather industry, brought Mazamet and the surrounding Valley international acclaim. They show how the area has benefited since the Middle Ages due to the energy and the purity of the river’s water. After centuries of eventful activity, the Arnette River and surrounding valley has finally become a place of tranquility where the quality of this natural environment is respected and preserved. The circuit is the initiative of a partnership between the town of Mazamet, the Association of Heritage Promotion, and the mission for local employment.

The waters of the Dure, loaded with shale, have the property of degreasing sheep's wool. Very early on, fulling mills were installed there: the wool was entirely processed here to be transformed into cloth. Signs: Yellow Markings Departure from the parking lot at the north exit of the village. Just after the Saint-Denis gate, take the D8 for 150m uphill. At the first fork in the road on the right, go past the farm "Bellevue". View of the Alzeau and Dure gorges and the village on its promontory. On the first part of the circuit, the paths leading to the various (private) mills follow one another. These took advantage of the driving force of the water to turn mill stones and other machines. The particular quality of the water of the Dure, which had the necessary properties for cleaning and wool degreasing, allowed the development of a textile industry. After crossing the hamlet of "Franc", cut the D8 and take the road opposite, the path heads west towards the Alzeau valley. You will enjoy the view of the Pyrenees. Arriving at the pig farm, turn left on the downhill path. 600 m further on, a fork on the right will make you join the Alzeau river by going down in the undergrowth. The river lost its mills in the 13th century when part of its water was captured to feed the Canal du Midi (gully of the Montagne Noire). Follow the river up to the bridge of "l'Isoule" dating from the 12th century: observe the two arches and the remarkable ferns on the nearby banks. Go back on the path for 100m, take the time to observe the traces of cart wheels in the stone and then turn right. Slight ascent in the shade of the vegetation then pass under a power line. At the crossroads with the track, continue straight ahead. Then quickly the markers will guide you back to the undergrowth, allowing you to discover a capitelle (dry stone hut). It is visible from a small layon on the left. When you get back to the main track, a little further on the right, a promontory with a view of the “Chateau de Villeneuve” and the gardens below. At the exit of the wood, a large open area with a breathtaking view over the Pyrenees; and back to the village of Montolieu.

Enjoy the coolness of the undergrowth during summer. Yellow markingsLeaving from the centre of the village, place de la Fontaine. Take west, rue du Vigné, a small paved road with a gentle slope. While enjoying the landscape, you will discover after 1 km / 0.6mi several breathtaking views of the four castles of Lastours: Cabaret, Tour Régine, Surdespine and Quertinheux. Then a small dirt road will take you along the downhill and will turn into a small path until you reach a brook flowing further down into the Orbiel. Crossing carefully and following the markings, you will start the return journey by an ascent in the undergrowth, which is very enjoyable in summer. Then, when you arrive in an open area, a track will appear to your left, taking you back to a small road running along the Limousis vineyards. At 200m/656ft after the ruin, in the bend, turn left onto the track taking you almost straight back to the village. Finally, a descent then a steep path and a service road will bring you to rue du Sol, ending up back to place de la Fontaine.

Loop to the north of the village, you will pass close to the cave, take the opportunity to visit it (pay for entry)! WARNING: in summer, protect yourself from the sun and keep hydrated because of the long distance, the sunshine and the elevation gain. Start in the centre of the village, Place de la Fontaine. Head north on Rue du Four, then continue along a slightly sloping path towards the "Grave" stream. Further on, turn left at the junction with the "Ménentière" stream and go up towards Fournes-Cabardès. In the village, turn right on rue de la bergerie (D401) leaving the wash house on your left. Walk for about 450m and then take a path on the right. Go down towards the Courrebies valley and go up to Sériès. Take the D401 and cross the hamlet then the ford. At the level of the "Courtal Long" sheepfold, in the left-hand bend, take the path on the right towards the pass (alt 644m) on the crest of Mount Simel. Take a break to admire the landscape. Resume the progression: go down the stony path for 1km then at the level of a grove of trees, turn right through the scrubland. At the bottom of the track, turn right and 150m further on, turn right again and go up. Arriving at a flat area, at a small crossroads: look out for the signs. Turn left and follow a small path in the middle of fairly short vegetation. Go down to the level of the Limousis cave, cross the shady car park and then take the road opposite which leads back to Limousis.

Bordered to the north by the Lauragais plain and the Minervois plain to the south, the Black Mountain forms the south west extremity of Central Massif. It extends for 70 km, from east to west, over three departments (Tarn, Aude and Hérault). The Pic du Nore, which culminates at 1211 metres, offers a 360° panorama with a view of the Pyrenées and the Mediterranean Sea.

"Historic birthplace" of Aussillon: it is the "old village" where some vestiges of the medieval castle are still visible. The history of the village is therefore  intrinsically linked to Mazamet and its golden era of the wool trade. The industrial development, during the 20th century, leads to a progressive urbanization of the city.

Residency for musicians, artists and software developer Residence Midi is primarily a residence space for musicians, artists and software developer but when our rooms are not occupied by artists they are open for regular bookings. We offer space to make music, host co-working sessions, organise workshops, do R&D, build installations, solder electronics, rehearse, and (most importantly) relax. Whatever it is, we got you covered. Nestled at the bottom of the Montagne Noire in southern France, Mazamet is a paradise for walking, cycling, swimming and just wandering around. Accomodation Our residency is situated on the first floor of our beautiful 1920’s Maison maitre, offering three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room and two balconies. Each bedroom has its own unique character and atmosphere. The Unit Our biggest and brightest room with a stunning view over the mountains and garden. It comes with a comfortable queen size bed and cozy rocking chair. It offers a personal en-suite bathroom, including bathtub and private toilet. It has airconditioning. The Blue room This room lends its name from the blue tapestry on the walls and stained glass windows. It has a comfortable queen size bed, work desk and en-suite toilet and sink. You share the communal shower. Le Maroc A bright and comfortable room with a cozy queen size bed. It comes with a small desk, couch (that serves as an extra bed) and a private balcony. You share the communal toilet and bathroom. The Kitchen Fully equipped with a stove, oven, dishwasher and fridge. Shopping facilities, regional markets and grocery stores are all in walking distance. The living room The wooden table seats 8 and is a great place to get work done. Sink in the couch to relax. You can see the garden and mountains from the balcony. The Garden We love our little park. Covered by trees and flowers: this 1 acre slab of greenery is the perfect place to relax. The garden is accessible through a private corridor that leads directly to the residency upstairs. There are multiple seating areas, an outside work space and even a shower for the hot summer days. Internet The whole house and even the garden has fast internet. Soon it will hopefully be even faster as we are getting fibre. Environment At Residence Midi we think of the environment. This is why most of our furniture is second hand vintage or repurposed, the linens and textiles are made of bio cotton, other natural material or fabricated out of recycled materials. All our cleaning products, detergents and beauty products are ecological, non toxic, biodegradable and often handmade and according to zero waste principles to avoid unnecessary packaging.

A few steps from the center, the hotel Le Boulevard, Logis de France, will be your calm and welcoming stopover. Good starting point to discover the Black Mountain.
