Robehomme is the only promontory amidst the Dives and Divette marshes. Up to the 19th century, during high tides, the sea covered the land as far as Troarn and Robehomme was transformed into an island. During the Second World War, the Germans flooded these marshes to hinder the Allies.

On the night of the 5th to 6th June 1944, Allied paratroops were dropped throughout the zone covered by this trail. Their mission was to reduce the Merville artillery battery to silence. Unfortunately, this marshy zone reduced the original contingent by two thirds. In memory of the young liberators who fell in the early hours of D-Day, commemorative steles are decked with crowns of poppies every year, to symbolise the sacrifice of these British troops.

At high tide, the Gros Banc is home to a vast array of bird species, which you can watch from the Beaulieu observatory in Merville-Franceville. Crossing the barriers and entering the Gros Banc is prohibited. This round-trip is available during tides with a coefficient under 80.

From Troarn, cross the marshes to discover the northern Pays d'Auge. You'll reach Beuvron-en-Auge, listed as one of France's most beautiful villages for its unspoilt authenticity. Continuing on, you'll pass through Cambremer, at the heart of the cider route, before pedaling on to Beaumont-en-Auge, where a magnificent panorama of the Touques valley awaits you. Finally, this bucolic cycle route takes you to Pont-l?Évêque, the finishing point of this journey through the heart of Auvergne?s picturesque villages.

Starting from Merville-Franceville by taking the Vélomaritime cycle route, follow the canal and cross the river via Pegasus Bridge, a strategic point of the D-Day landings, as you go along the water to reach Caen.

You'll love the hiking trails and the nearby Véloscénie cycle route linking Paris to Mont Saint Michel. If you fancy a spot of fishing, there are plenty of opportunities in the village, with lakes and trout in the river.

Discover the Poterie du Mesnil de Bavent, built in 1842 in traditional Norman architecture. Here, you'll be able to admire the "épis de faîtage" (finials), the ceramic confections that can be seen on some of the roofs of local villas. You'll then pass through the pottery workshop, where craftsmen shape blocks of clay before your very eyes, perpetuating the movements handed down by potters since the 19th century. Finally, end your visit in the manor house, where furniture from the period of its construction still resides.

Numerous units were involved in the fighting around Bréville and Château Saint-Côme. The Black Watch Scots who led the assault on the Bréville hill from June 8 to 12, 1944, were decimated by mortars and machine guns ambushed on the summit. To the right of Bréville, at the Château Saint-Côme, the Germans violently attacked the paratroopers of the 9th Battalion and the Scots in a fierce battle. The arrival of Major Hill and his Canadians enabled them to be repulsed. After another attack, the burning village was liberated on June 13. The capture of Bréville cost hundreds of dead and wounded. Along Route départementale 37b, the front line until August 17, 1944, in front of the entrance to the cha?teau de Saint- Co?me, three monu- ments today recall the fierce fighting that took place on this hill between British soldiers and the German soldiers of the 21st Panzer division. On either side of the British Battle of Bois-des-Monts steeple, the Dutch steeple and the statue of the Scottish fighter commemorate the involvement of the Dutch Princess Ire?ne Brigade at the end of the battle and the Black Watch Regiment on June 11, 1944. On that day, for its first engagement in Normandy, the regiment of the 51st Scottish Division lost almost 200 men.

It was on the heights of Amfreville that the British commandos carried out their last mission on June 6, 1944. They had been ordered to hold this lock east of the D-Day beaches, repelling any German counter-attack. Around the central square, dominated by the church and surrounded by farms, the commandos set up defensive positions against the German lines a few hundred meters away in Bavent, Bréville and, further north, Sallenelles. They prepared for a war of position in trenches dug for their first night in France, to the east of the church, opposite Bavent and then at the edge of a grove opposite Bréville. Arriving in? Amfreville in the late afternoon of June 6, 1944, the officers of no. 6 Commando chose a large building closing one of the corners of the Place du Plein to house their men and HQ. Owned by the Saulnier family, the farm had extensive outbuildings and a large courtyard capable of housing everything the commandos would need during the battle: an infirmary, a kitchen, dormitories and a morgue. The "commando farm" served as billeting for several hundred men, and as HQ for the 1st brigade until the end of July 1944. Today, a monument in front of the farmhouse and a plaque to the right of the entrance porch commemorate this singular episode in the Battle of Normandy. Since June 6, 2014, a bust of Lord Lovat, commander of the First Brigade of Commandos, has dominated the square in front of the farmhouse, which was completely reconfigured for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

One of the Allied high command’s key targets on D-Day, the Merville Artillery Battery was put out of action by the British 9th Parachute Battalion. Within a preserved site covering several hectares, an educational trail takes you past 6 bunkers, now converted into museums. An example of the legendary Douglas C-47 that took part in the Normandy Landings is on display in the museum grounds.

It was on the heights of Amfreville that Commando Kieffer carried out its last mission on June 6, 1944. The French had been ordered to hold this lock east of the D-Day beaches, repelling any German counter-attack. British commandos set up defensive positions around the central square, dominated by the church, on June 6, 1944. When the French Commando Kieffer troops arrived at Le Plain in the late afternoon, they took up positions facing the German lines just a few hundred meters away in Bavent, Bréville and, further north, Sallenelles. Preparing for a war of position, the French dug trenches for their first night in France, to the east of the church, opposite Bavent, then at the edge of a grove opposite Bréville. It was on this large lawn, now known as Place du Commandant Kieffer, that the British erected a monument "dedicated to the memory of the officers and men of the 1st Special Service Brigade who lost their lives in the fighting for Normandy in June and July 1944". Inaugurated on July 14, 1944, the monument is like a challenge to the Germans 300m away. Between the pennant of the commandos, that of the commune carried by a 14-18 veteran, the tricolor flag and the Union Jack, the population gathered to pay tribute to all the soldiers who have fallen since June 6. Considered the first commemorative site in Normandy, it has been completed since June 6, 2019, by a bronze bust of Philippe Kieffer, a tribute to the Frenchmen who fought at Amfreville before leaving the commune on June 29, 1944. On June 6, 2024, a bust of Lord Lovat, patron saint of the Commandos, was inaugurated opposite the "Commandos Farm".
