The Meuse Cycle Route (an international route) is ideal for a great discovery for cyclists of all levels. This “Véloroute” which began in the French Vosges massif, carries on along the banks of the Meuse, and then crossed Belgium towards the Netherlands. From its source to its end, this beautiful route is about 62 miles long and offers you, on both banks, a landscape of friendly towns alternating with pretty villages. The Belgian section of this route in Wallonia is called "The Road to the Citadels" which takes you from Hastière to Visé via Dinant, Namur, Huy and Liège. Enough to spend a few days relaxing through a beautfiful range of scenery.

Heer is a village mostly composed of low stone houses which give the village a charming aspect inherited from the neighboring France.The country of the "Minouches" is still a village attached to its folklore and a very intense local life.The small river "de Massembre" follows the border between Belgium and France.Nice little walk between village, country roads and wooded paths.You can end your walk at Place to B'Heer for a tasting of one of their 300 local and regional beers.You will also pass by Massembre, a vacation estate committed to sustainable development.

Beautiful walk along the Meuse river at the border of Belgium and France. Ideal place to observe the birds along the Meuse. A bit of climbing too, but the view is worth it. You pass by the vacation village of Massembre, an estate of 140 ha, of which 120 ha are wooded. A walk that allows you to get away from the edge of the Meuse. A partly wooded route to better appreciate nature, but also through the village of Agimont, located on a hill overlooking a beautiful and vast plain at the end of which we discover the town of Givet. Overlooking the village, you can see the ruins of the old manor house which was the residence of the Counts of Paris.The current Agimont castle was built in 1880 by the Puissant family, a rich family from Charleroi. Unfortunately, the castle was the victim of a fire.The domain has become an adventure park with a paintball and obstacle course. In Agimont you will find several good restaurants that will please your taste buds, like for exemple "Le Bord'eau" or "Le Select".

A short walk in the woods starting from Heer-Agimont will allow you to discover a somewhat unknown area of our commune, but which nevertheless presents a certain natural interest.The village of Heer-Agimont has a unique cable-stayed bridge on the Upper Meuse and is also the haven of the boatmen who have built a modern chapel there, an example of contemporary sacred art.Located between the villages of Heer and Agimont, it has developed around its now disused station. Several good restaurants are located there to please your taste buds, like for exemple "Le Bord'eau" or "Le Select".

Very nice walk from Heer-Agimont, to the parking lot at the St Nicolas chapel, a chapel built in the 60's, example of contemporary sacred art and the haven of the boatmen. Afterwards, we take advantage of the coolness of the RAVeL, a former railroad, to climb to the heights of Agimont where you can enjoy beautiful views of the countryside, before descending through the woods of Wagne. This walk is recommended at the beginning of April, because at that time the Wagne woods are full of daffodils. Back in Heer-Agimont you can have a drink or a bite to eat in one of the local establishments.

Before returning to the village, you will walk along the limestone lawn of Kokiamont, a site where you can observe uncommon plants, such as the black doradilla, the Chartreux carnation and the leaning silene. The local fauna includes various interesting species, especially solitary bees. Due to its high biological interest, this forest slope has been included in the Natura 2000 network for the most part. Not far from the village of Heer, along the river Meuse, is Les Sorbiers, a hotel with a very good restaurant. Upon departing from Romedenne, the Boucle de l’Hermeton will take you through the pretty, characteristic villages of the municipality of Doische, which is crossed by the Hermeton river and its breathtaking valley. This route will lead you through fields and woodlands, to Vodelée, Gochenée, Soulme and at the heights of the valley, Surice and Doische. Pass near the Notre Dame de Bonne Fontaine chapel and the former Moulin de Soulme mill. The loop heads south a little to reach the Doische woods and the RAVeL network. The steep parts on this route enable you to enjoy spectacular views but you do not exhaust yourself.

You follow Les Tourneux as far as the enticing village of Gimnée, which is built on the crest of a limestone hill. You then leave its town centre via Tienne de Matagne. The lush spectacle of the Coupu Tienne Nature Reserve offers the chance to hear the sweet song of the melodious linnet. You then come to Treignes, a village with around 700 inhabitants and five museums, making it the village with the most museums per inhabitant in the world! This tranquil destination is built around its imposing neo-Gothic church and castle farm. After Treignes, you follow the pretty Viroin river to Vierves-sur-Viroin, one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in Wallonia.’   

This stretch of the itinerary starts on a promontory overlooking the valley on the outskirts of the Fens. The village of Soulme is far removed from the hustle and bustle of main roads and is listed as one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in Wallonia’. You will be charmed by all of its traditional farmhouses and homes dating primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries. The route plunges into the beautiful Hermeton Valley and along the stream, before climbing up towards the plateau. There is a beautiful view of the stunning 18th-century mill in the hollow of the woods. You reach the Chevauchée trail in the Pays des Lacs region north of the village of Doische. You will encounter charming buildings full of character and several remarkable trees.

Overlooking the town, on a steep rocky spur, the imposing Charlemont Fort dominates the landscape. Built on the orders of Charles V, this citadel covers a surface area of 60 hectares, with over 10 kilometres of ramparts, rising 100 metres above Givet. In addition to its defensive role in time of war, Charlemont Fort was, in the more recent past, as of 1962, used by the military as a commando training centre or CEC. As such, it resumed the traditions of the 9th regiment of Zouaves. The so-called PAR courses included acclimatisation, climbing, escape, urban combat and other challenges. Following the reorganisation of the National Defence ordered by President Nicolas Sarkozy, the military handed over Charlemont Fort to the municipality in July 2009. Charlemont hosts events throughout the season, workshops and tours adapted for children, in addition to free and guided tours for all. Leisure activities are also on offer: all-terrain electric scooter rides throughout the site; laser games, outdoors in the training village of the former Commando Training Centre; and since 2023, accrocommando, a unique experience right on the ramparts of Charlemont, a course inspired by commandos. Listed as a historic monument in 1990. Since 1994, "the Manège" is a cultural centre : Cinema, auditorium for concerts, plays...The opportunity to discover the inside of this superb building and in particular the impressive wood-frame of 17 metres high. In the 17th century (1621), Ursuline nuns, who were responsible for the education of young girls, lived in their house. This house was located on the banks of the Meuse, inside the ramparts, probably next to what was to become the old clinic. Does the door that remains today come from this house or was it rebuilt later when another group of nuns settled in the same place? Pierre Hubert alludes to this when speaking of religious establishments (150 ans de vie givetoise 1789-1940): "Quai des Fours, a large building received blind children who were also looked after by nuns". On old postcards, we can see from left to right a large building, probably from the 19th century, which was to give way much later to the Givet clinic, then we can clearly see the door, this one preceding the large building with an entrance porch in the center (building probably also from the 19th century, of the same construction as the previous one). The building of the nuns was probably this one. Until recently, it housed the European Center for Arts and Crafts and today, the Givet Tourist Office. The door we are interested in is older, perhaps from the time of the Ursulines? The question remains!

In this former church, Etienne Nicolas méhul, born in Givet in 1763, played his first music notes with the old organist of the "Récollets" church. Monument only visible from the outside.

This 3-level cylindrical tower was originally the keep of the seigneurial residence that occupied the southwest corner of the Castrum of Givet Saint-Hilaire. Monument not open to the public inside. A bit of history... In the past, the tower was simply called the thour de Givet, the big thour de Givet or the thourfort. The name Victoire would only date back to the French period. Probably renamed thus in honor of Louis XIV and his armies, winner of the siege of Namur in 1692.

A few words about the rooster located behind the monument... Made after the Great War, it is not surprising that at the time of the invasion of 1940 and the ensuing occupation, the Germans wanted to seize and remove it. To participate in the design of some cannon, it was first the bronze statue of Mehul, also at the time on the Place Mehul, which disappeared first. Then the rooster, but in a different way: The mayor at the time, Roger Declef, conceived the project of hiding it. He contacted Mario Biadatti, whom he often met at the town hall. Mario Biadatti, a member of the Resistance before his time, came to get food vouchers for French soldiers who had escaped from the German camps. Charged with the mission of removing the rooster, Mario Biadatti dismantled the rooster, hid it in a bag and took it to Gabriel Declef's house, clerk of the court and father of the first magistrate, at n°13 rue d'Estrée (today rue Flayelle). The rooster then disappeared into the courtyard... that was where the manure was! In September 1944, on the morning of the Liberation, he dug it up and brought it to the town hall. All that remained was to put it back in place on the monument. This is how the famous rooster on the Givet war memorial was saved.

This monument lists the names of Germans killed at Givet during the attack of August 30, 1914. The main regiment was the 104th Saxon Reserve Regiment. In the years 1941/1945, the German soldiers in Givet commemorated their countrymen by laying a wreath at the foot of the stele, but during the night some people threw it into the stream. To punish this misdeed, the Germans forced the young Givetois to stand guard day and night at the foot of the stele for nearly a month. This monument has undergone several transformations. At the end of the 60s/beginning of the 70s, a car damaged it. The Germans came to rebuild it, but the large stones that made up the slopes were certainly broken, and they put it back together in its present form, with a smaller slope.

The geographical situation of the "Pointe de Givet", the spectacular relief of certain sites, the existence of warm and dry microclimates allowed the development of an exceptional characteristic flora : 454 botanical species and 320 animal species were listed. Walking or hiking is authorized in the nature reserve. The persons are allowed on the marked paths, alone or accompanied. It is also possible to make thematic guided tours. These visits are annually proposed by the Academy of the Natural heritage of Champagne-Ardenne. Lying in the broad Meuse valley, the small town of Givet has linked its destiny with this river. A commercial waterway, in the Middle Ages the Meuse quickly took on a strategic importance. Whoever held sway over it was master of the economy in northern Europe. So Givet became a fortified town! In 1554, Charles the Fifth had a major fortification built here, Charlemont fort. He defied the hegemony of the King of France, Henri II. In the 18th century the inevitable Vauban, architect of King Louis XIV, came to Givet, which had become French by then, to erect a gigantic defensive system around the town. The fortifications, garrison forts and moats were to surround the town, making it impregnable. Guided tours of the town and its fortifications provided by the tourist office.

Leaving, leaving, leaving Charleville, this is what the young Rimbaud wanted. In 1863, the railway crossed the steep-sided Meuse valley: it went where the Industrial Revolution was unfolding, to Revin, Fumay and Givet. Rimbaud jumped on the train and into progress. He was to see this fabulous machine pass beneath the mountain of the Four Sons of Aymon and cross the Meuse over huge viaducts. These days, it is possible to cycle from Charleville to Givet along one of the loveliest green paths of Europe (open to non-motorised vehicles). You can return by train, if you wish, along this same line that carried Rimbaud towards his dreams of escape. Bicycles can be taken on the trains free of charge.
