Le Mesnil is the least populated, and doubtless the most picturesque village in the whole of Viroinval. However, 90 years ago, there were 500 inhabitants and no less than 19 cafés, some of which were illegal. Le Mesnil keeps a precious record of its past. The short walk enables you to go along paths through the unfenced meadows leading you to the top of the hill where there is view over the Meuse valley and its Ardennes forests. The Deluve stream brings a refreshing touch at the end of the route, just before the climb back up to the village.

Upon departing from the church in Le Mesnil, a small village that is typical of the municipality of Viroinval, the itinerary follows Rue de Montigny, which descends between large meadows to reach the Ardennes forest. As an aside, Le Mesnil is the least populous and most picturesque village in Viroinval. The itinerary runs along the ‘Deluve’ stream and then crosses it to reach a very pretty trail along the border between Belgium and France, arriving at ‘La Folie’. This place recalls the audacity of the people who entered the forest to forge a sliver of light and vibrancy. You will return to the village via a charming stone path through the forest.

Oignies-en-Thiérache – a typical village of the region sits in a beautiful clearing of deep forests in the foothills of the Ardenne. This walk begins at the edge of the woods and follows the steep little-known paths of the ‘Viroin-Hermeton’ Natural Park. This hike, takes you to a full on immersion, off the beaten track forest route. Firstly, on the ‘Oignies-en-Thiérache’ heights, a village in the slate quarries, where you’ll see the village of ‘Le Mesnil’ and its church between the pines. The place called ‘Risque tout’ is the tipping point towards the Meuse Valley which flows into France. The ridge trail offers epic views over the valley and the French villages. You’ll then come across border markers in this area, as you walk along the French border. Characterized by slate, the steep region imposes significant differences in height. As you make your way down towards the deep valley of the ‘Ry d´Alise’ you’ll enjoy the breathtaking panorama over the Ardennes valleys.

On 7 June 1995, the geographical centre of the EU 15 was in Viroinval. It is located in the place named ‘du Trou du Diable’ (the Devil’s hole) which is an old slate quarry where a glass cathedral was built. A choice of two hikes will take you there. A long 15-km route or the variant that reduces the trail to 9 km. The circuit goes through the woods to a boundary ridge that dominates the French Meuse with its panorama over the river and the towns of Fumay and Haybes.  Old slate quarries, which was a flourishing industry until the dawn of the First World War, lie along the route. At the place named ‘Risque-Tout’ (Risk-it-All), you can reduce the hike to 9 km by taking the variant proposed to the right (green cross). 

From the Ruisseau de Nouée valley near Oignies-en-Thiérache, you enter through the woods near Ry de Rome. Feel free to get lost in your imagination in the peace of this large stretch of forest, before descending towards Couvin. You will follow the bed of the Eau Noire river from the ridge to the valley. This magnificent river is surrounded by hay meadows, isolated farms and deep forests. Despite its name, the Eau Noire river is famous for the clarity of its water, which comes directly from the woods. You continue west through the mountain massifs that overlook the Eau Noire river and reach Forges by crossing the Ermitage stream, after bypassing the village of Presgaux. You will pass near Scourmont Abbey, where the famous Trappist Chimay beer is brewed.   

From the Chemin du Bois to the south of Vierves-sur-Viroin, enjoy an enchanting spell in the Ardennes forest by bypassing the Fond des Chénaux, a stream that emerges in the Fontaine Murée and flows into the Viroin. You pass near an old sandstone quarry before reaching Olloy-sur-Viroin, a charming stone village that the river runs through peacefully. You then follow the old local railway line, which has been converted into the RAVeL network and runs along the Nouée stream. It is dotted with stone markers that date to the time of the Principality of Liège. Don’t miss the Fond de Noye nature reserve, a wetland area that is rich in biodiversity, the beautiful Nutons quarry and its flowers, or the charming Grenadier ponds. The former church was destroyed during the tragic days of the village in August 1914. The present church dates back to the beginning of the 19th century and was inaugurated in 1927. The plans were given by the architect Lemasson and the work was executed by Gustave Despas. It has a Latin cross plan and is built in Haybes' arkose rubble. Only the corner chains, cornices and bays are made of limestone ashlar. The building is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, whose two colossal statues can be seen at the crossing of the transept. They could come from the old church of 1885. Please note: Church open to the public only during religious services.

In the heart of the village, we can see a triumphal arch made of white stone of France with the list of victims of the village. In the center, there are characters, made in bronzed cast iron, situated on a fragment of the globe representing France.The scene represents the French people, under the guise of a teenager. In his left hand, he carries books representing the Law and the Science. In his right hand, he brandishes the torch of freedom. Protected by a lion, he walks under the wing of the victory that guides him on the right way. The  sculpture is put on a blue stone base, also known under the name of limestone of Givet. on this base, we can see three bronze plates. The first one represents the main street of the village in flames. The second one shows the Fatherland bowing a grave. The last plate shows a section of machine gunners, on the left bank of the river, looking towards Haybes. This sculpture is the work of L. Rauner.

In this park open to the public, 120 trees of 40 varieties of apples, pears, plums and cherries have been planted. It is also a haven for fauna and flora: Bats, owls, songbirds find refuge in shelters or nest boxes placed on the site. The regional natural park invites you to walk the trails teaching of April to late September, accompanied by an explanatory booklet available on site. The chapel was built on the former Fosse des Trépassés, one of the most important slate quarries of the town in the 18yh century. To be noticed on the slate roof: A slate cross. In front of this chapel, you will discover what is called a « verdeau », that is to say a pile of unusable slate debris, which forms a kind of slag heap.But... don’t called them slag heaps.In slate jargon, these artificial hills made by accumulating slate waste are called « verdeaux ». How tiny you feel in front of this St. George's church... Dimensions: 62 m long, 20 m wide and 70 m high. Built between 1872 and 1876 on the site of the former church which already existed in 1439, it has 1200 places. The building is made entirely of Dom-le-Mesnil limestone and the polygonal spire of the bell tower, flanked by 4 bell towers, is made of Jaumont stone. The fresco is dedicated to the men who extracted blocks of slate from the mines. This work made of slate and concrete is located avenue Jean Jaurès.
