Step back in time as you explore the sites shaped by the Resistance around the Bâtie de Gresse. This is an opportunity to understand that the inhabitants and mountain troops stood firm here well before the fighting in 1944. From the Font Rousse car park, make for La Bâtie and then Col de l'Allimas via Chez Cotte and the Ruisseau de Chauplane. On the way down, head for La Bâtie and then Chez Cotte, staying on the road (D8A).

This heritage trail takes you up the pastoral mountain of Laud and on to the hamlet of Chômeil. It presents the life and history of this mountain pasture in twelve stages with information panels created by "Gresse en Vercors Histoire et Patrimoine". It can be covered in two to four hours, or you can make a day of it and picnic near the market hall. Panel 1: The barony of Gresse at the time of the lords: the Artaud de Montauban and De Ponnat dynasties. Panel no. 2: Rural road no. 1 from Gresse to Monestier and the fairs of our two villages. Walk back down the same road to Uclaire, and head for Col de l'Allimas along the path (GTV). From Col de l'Allimas, go down the road to the intersection with the GTV in the direction of Pas du Bru, then Combe Rouge, Aux Fayolles, Côte Emblay and Girard, and then Gresse-en-Vercors via the road to Grand Veymont.

The sublime Balcon Est du Vercors route is a little for cyclists! At the foot of the Vercors cliffs of the Vercors, this small mountain road offers splendid views of the "French Dolomites".

From the summit of the Serpaton and its bucolic atmosphere, admire the 360 ° panorama, observe in particular the East gate of the Vercors and the Grand Veymont, Dévoluy, Oisans or Belledonne. Departure from Gresse-en-Vercors near the church, take the direction of Col de l'Allimas 3. Leave the village to join the Pas du Bru 1 then Combe Rouge 2 to the South. At the Col de l'Allimas, enjoy the magnificent view of the famous Mont Aiguille. The return to the village of Gresse-en-Vercors takes place between meadows and undergrowth until Uclaire 4. The path after crossing the Aulanier stream joins the road from the Pas du Bru. The walk ends in the same itinerary as on the way.

Sentier de l'eau, au fil de la Gresse is a safe, easy-to-access itinerary for discovering water in all its forms. This itinerary takes in the wetlands, crosses the Gressette stream and runs alongside the Gresse river. Interpretation stations along the way help you to better understand the vital role played by water in the commune of Gresse-en-Vercors.

On July 24, 1944, German troops went looking for a young member of the Resistance called Georges Mouttet. He was not in when the troops arrived at the family home, but they interrogated his widowed mother, Blanche Mouttet, with great brutality. Her cries were heard by the woman living next door.When the torturers didn’t find out the information about her son they had come looking for, they finished Blanche off with blows from a pickaxe. Her body was burnt in her own home, the fire spreading to the rest of the hamlet, sparing the only house on the other side of the road.

The Romantic movement reached its peak in the 19th century. Mont Aiguille became a key subject of landscape paintings, often in tandem with agricultural scenes that depicted an ideal of harmony. Mont Aiguille offered these Romantic artists an aesthetic that you can explore from the various angles offered by the surrounding summits and plateaus.The style of the period depicts an idealised Mont Aiguille, the symbol of nature in all its harmony. Humans make only discreet appearances, pictured performing their daily tasks or in contemplation. The paintings convey a serenity and tranquillity that contrasts strongly with the hustle and bustle of our lives in the modern world.

The Mont Aiguille, from its 2087 meters, is a mound of the eastern barrier of the Vercors. Indeed, the Mount is composed of the same materials as the rest of the plateau (limestones and marls deposited by the sea before the rising of the Alps) to which it was formerly attached. The most tender limestones and the presence of numerous faults facilitated the dissolution of the limestone over time, leading to the isolation of Mount.

The hamlet of La Bâtie between Mont Aiguille and Grand Veymont is lodged at an altitude of over 1,100 m. Only a handful of residents lived here all year round, grouped together around the chapel. Until 1858, when it was attached to Gresse-en-Vercors, La Bâtie was a parish in its own right. The hamlet was home to 22 families – around 100 inhabitants – in the 17th century. The chapel, which was rebuilt in the late 1800s, faces south-east. With its thick walls, half-buried porch and small openings, it is a typical example of a mountain chapel.

On July 4, 1944, two houses in the hamlet owned by Madame Freydier were destroyed by the occupying forces following the ambush carried out the previous day by the Font Rousse Resistance at the Allimas pass. The first, here on the side of the road, had recently been repaired in 1938. It was clad in corrugated iron and consisted of four rooms, cellar and barn. The second, which was very close by, had a thatched roof and two rooms, a cellar, barn and stables with all the agricultural tools used at the time.On July 21, 1944, the sheepfold belonging to Léon Maurice was burned down during the attack in the south-east of the Vercors as part of the general offensive by the 157th Reserve Division under the command of General Pflaum.

Nestled at the foot of Mount Aiguille, the Chapel of Trézanne offers a magnificent view of this majestic mountain, overlooking it more than 1000 m. This small Romanesque chapel is characterized by its thatched roof which was rehabilitated in 2001 and recently renovated. Before the eighteenth century, the thatched roofs were numerous in the Trièves: they were gradually replaced by tile roofing, notably because of the fires.

A sawmill here belonging to Paul Cotte, aged 43 in 1944, worked the wood from the surrounding forests. On July 3 Paul received a phone call around noon warning him that a German convoy was about to arrive by road from St Michel-les-Portes. He lost no time passing on the news to his Maquis neighbours in Font Rousse. Jean Beschet, head of the camp, decided to set up an ambush immediately at the Col de l’Allimas pass. At dawn on July 21, 1944, during the widespread German offensive against the Vercors, the Cotte sawmill was occupied and used as shelter for a command post. The owner of the sawmill was taken hostage together with 10 other men from the surrounding area. They were forced to carry heavy loads for the enemy during the assault on the Pas de la Selle. The owner was set free on July 24 at the same time as two other hostages.

Shacks were built here to house young men as part of the paramilitary youth workcamps – Chantiers de Jeunesse – belonging to the Monestier-de-Clermont group, which were set up during the summer of 1940. The task was to instil a sense of discipline and duty together with respect for authority, since military service was no longer permitted under the conditions imposed by the Armistice (June 22, 1940). Working in the forest kept the young men busy, while festivals were held to glorify the commitment to the homeland. The group's workcamps closed in early October 1943. A short while later, members of the Resistance from Camp 2 (initially set up at Puit des Ravières in Corrençon) dropped down through the highland areas of the Vercors to the sheepfold near the sawmill before moving on to the premises deserted by the Chantiers de Jeunesse. Louis Kalck (André) took over command of the Font Rousse camp before handing it over to Jean Beschet in the spring. The latter orchestrated the ambush against the German convoy that was crossing the Allimas pass on July 3, 1944.

The pond was built in 1942 by the Scouts and Skiers Section of the 6th Battalion of Alpine Infantrymen headed by battalion commander Albert Seguin de Reyniès. The section was stationed at the High Mountain Training Centre set up by Captain Pourchier in 1940. The units of the 6th Battalion came to train here, with lieutenants Eysseris, Chabl, Tanant and Gardent also passing through. When the battalion was disbanded on November 28, 1942, they answered the call of their commander and joined the Resistance, making a name for themselves as heroes during the fighting in the Vercors in 1944. The hamlet of Uclaire, which sheltered a member of the Maquis, was burned by German troops on July 4, 1944 in retaliation for the attack on an enemy convoy on July 3 at the Allimas pass.

A rustic cabin located at the entrance of the Hauts-Plateaux Nature Reserve not far from the Pas de l'Essaure, in the valley Combau.It is composed of a basic common room on the ground floor with table and wood stove (to envisage small dry wood) and a floor on the floor (sleeping of 10-15 people, to envisage mattress and sleeping bag ).There is water at 700 m but be careful, it is often dry!Remember to close the chalet at the time of departure (shutters and doors).

At the crossroads of several important trails, the Cabin de Pre Peyret is one of the most frequented of the massif. Located at the entrance of the high plateaus at 1600 m, this unguarded stone hut can accommodate 10 people for the night. It has a stove.The place exudes an old tradition of welcome because it is an old cabaret where those who were penniless went to drink at the Fountain of the Endettés, which bears his name well.

The shelter of Peyrouse (Abri de la Peyrouse) located on the balconies East of the Vercors is an unguarded stone hut, 2 places are planned to sleep there, but you will not find there water nor stove to warm you.
